Letters Patent No. 77,499, datccZ'Ma) 5, 186B.,
IMPROVED CURTAIN-FIXTURES.
:Be it known that we, J. DJLEGG and It LEGG, ei Long Eddy, in the county of Sullivan, andState of New York, have invented a newV and improved Applicationof Shades to Windows; and we do hereby declarev that the following is a full, clear; and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilledin the art to make and use the sume, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this s'peciiication.-
This invention lrelates to a new and improved mode of' applyingshades towindows, whereby the forniermaybe raised and lowered' either from thev top o r bottom, as occasion niay require.' A
The object `of the invention is to obtain a very simple means fox-"accomplishing the nhoveresult, whiclxwill Enot be liable to get out of repair.
In the accomprnyng sheet ofdrawings- Y I Figure l's a face view of a window, having a shade applied to it according t" ourinvention.
Figure 2, avertical section ofthe same, taken in thelne :c x, fig. 1.;
Similar letters' of4 reference 'indicate 'corresponding parts. y A represents a window-shade, the upper.' end of which is secured to a roller`l3, the jonrnal'sa of which 'are itted'in plates b b, attached tothe lower ends of tapes e c. These topes are secured to pulleys d d, which aretted on shafts e, `itted in cylindricalboxes B B,which are secured .to the upper` part of the windowdramej, 'one at each side thereof, (see iig. 1.)VA On the shafts e e there are'pplaced coiled' springs C C, one von each, the inner endsjof said springs being attached to the shafts, and the outerends'ettached to lids or covers f of the Vboxes B, said lidser'oovers being notched' at their edges, to receive a'pin, g, 'on the side o f the boxes, by which the springs are prevented from expandingy or uncoiling. h v l 'By this arrangement the springs, byturning the-lids or covers, .may he wound upto the required degree of tension, and retained or held by the ping on the side of the boxes, iitting' in one of'the notches ofthe lids lor covers'.
The springs C Chave, a tendency-to draw the roller B upward, and on one 'endof the roller there is a pulley, lh, to which noord, D, is attached, '.vhieh'ex'tendsdown andpassesthrough a clamp, E, attached to one side of the window-frame. This clamp is composed o'f a curved arm`F, which workson a pivot, z', (see ig.1,)
` andY clampslor bites lthe cord against the upperted` .,veV ofthe slot jin the socket k, in which it is fitted.
loops m m at the lower-part of the-window-frame.
Thel lower edge of the shade A has a bar, G, attached, which is providedwith two hooks Z Z, to catch into In order to4 lower the upper end of the shade, the bottoni of the same is hooked tothe loops m in, and the cord D pulledl down, which causes the roller B'to turn as it `descends, and wind thev upper part of the shade upon lit, the springs C being also wound up as the roller descends, the cla'mpE holding` the cord at any desired point by simply pulling down the lower end of lthe arm E. f
In order to'raise the upper'part of thc -curtain, the cerd'D is releasedi'rom the clamp ,vbypress ing upward the lower end oi' the arin F,,the'sp'rings4 -C C then drawing upward the roller B.l
n order to raise the lower part of theshade, it is uhhoolred from the loops m m, and the springs C C beingl strong enough to hold the roller Bin position wh'le it 'is turned by pulling the co'rcl l), the shade is wound u onzit.
p Wcwould remark that the roller B may be composed of two longitudinal parte, andthe top ofthe shade fitted hetween'shidparts, and firmly clamped, by securing the twop'arts together by screws. yThe bar'G, at the lower end of the shade, may be secured to itin the same way. l
We claim as n'e'w, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-.-
1.4 Connecting the roller 'Bfthroughthe medium of tapes-c c, to springs C C, secured Vto the upper pert or the window-frame, in connection with the hooks Hand loopslm m, o rother suitable fastening for securing or holdingthe lower endof the shane, and the cord D on the pu'lley z of the roller, all' being arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth. v Y
2Y The clamp E, when' us'ed in connection with the cord D of Y the shade-roller B, conncted to the springs OC, substantially as and for th purnosc specified.
J.D. LEGG, y I. W. LEGG.
