PATENT OFFICE.
SPRINKLING ATTACHMENT FOR MOWERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 774,284, dated November 8, 1904. Application filed July 1, 1904;- Serial No. 214,911. (No model.)
To all whom may concern:
Be it known that I, HANS SORENSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Snoma, in the county of Butte and State of South Dakota,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sprinkling Attachments for Mowers;
and I do declare the following to be a full, clear,
and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is an improved sprinkling attachment for mowing-machines and the like, its object being to provide improved means for keeping the cutting apparatus of such machines constantly moist, whereby the said apparatus is lubricated, the draft and friction materially reduced, and the cutting-teeth are prevented from gumming and clogging.
With these and other objects in view my invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figurel is a perspective view of a mowing-machine provided with my improved sprinkling apparatus. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view, on a larger scale, of a portion of the cutting apparatus, showing the improved attachment thereon. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the same, taken on the plane indicated by the line a a of Fig. 2.
In the embodiment of my invention I provide a suitable water-reservoir vessel 1, adapted to be supported on the tongue or frame of the machine and provided with a faucet 2 and with a clamp 10 to secure it in place. To the faucet is attached a flexible tube 8 of suitable length.
On the upper side of the finger-bar of the cutting apparatus, immediately in rear of the cutter-bar, is a sprinkling-tube 4:, which is triangular in form in cross-section with its apex on its front side and bearing directly against and in rear of the cutter-bar. The sprinkling-tube is provided with rearwardly-extending clamp-arms 5, of which a suitable number are employed, the said clamp-arms having their rear ends downturned, as at 6, to bear against the rear side of the finger-bar and secured thereto by means of set-screws 7.
5 The sprinkling-tube has that portion thereof which coincides with the clip of the finger-bar ofi'set vertically, as at 8, to clear the said clip. The said sprinkling-tube is further provided with a suitable number of discharge-tubes 9, one for each ledger-plate, which dischargetubes are here shown as extending forwardly and as being curved in form and of such length as to be adapted to discharge directly onto the ledger-plates and onto the cutter-plates, as the latter move over the ledger-plates. Theflexible tube is coupled to the sprinkling-tn be, and it will be understood that when the faucet 2 is opened water will be fed from the reservoir or vessel 1 through the flexible tube, the sprinkling-tube, and the discharge-tubes and directed upon the ledger-plates and cutterplates, so as to prevent them from gummingand to constantly Wash their surfaces. By reason of the triangular cross-sectional shape of the sprinkling-tube and the disposition of its apex directly in rear of the cutter-bar grass is prevented from getting between the said sprinkling-tube and the said cutter-bar.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principles or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with cutting apparatus having a fingerbar, ledger-plates, a cutterbar and cutter-plates, a sprinkling apparatus including a sprinkling-tube having means to clamp it in place on the finger-bar and provided with discharge-tubes adapted to discharge water onto the ledger-plates and cutter-plates, substantially as described.
2. In combination with the finger-bar of av cutting apparatus, a sprinkling apparatus comprising a reservoir vessel, 2. flexible tube connected thereto, a sprinkling-tube connected to the flexible tube and provided with dischargetubes and clamp-bars, the latter extending I00 reurwardly from the sprinkling-tube, engagl rearwardly from the cutter-bar, substantially ing the rear and under sides of the finger-bar as described. and being provided with sot-screws to clamp I In testimony whereof I have hereunto set them in place thereon, substantially as del my hand in presence of two subscribing witscribed. nesses.
3. In combination With a linger-bar and cutter-bar of a cutting apparatus, a sprinkling- HANS SORENSEN.
tube bearing on the finger-bar and directly Witnesses: against the rear side of the cutter-bar and J. S. CRAIG, 10 having its upper side inclined upwardly and M. \V. READ.
