SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 773,824, dated November 1, 1904..
Application filed October 27, 1903. Serial No. 178,710. (No model.)
To aZZ wl'tont it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT THALHEIMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in boxes to be used for cigars, confectionery, or the like articles; and the object of the same is to produce a knockdown box that may be easily folded together to form a solid strong box and also to permit a full inspection of the contents thereof without disturbing the same.
To this end the invention consists in the details of construction, as hereinafter more fully set forth in the following specification and claim and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which c Figure 1 is a plan view of the box open flat and with the end pieces removed. Referringmoreparticnlarlyto thedrawings, the sections or pieces constituting the cover 1, bottom piece 2, and the side pieces 3 of the box are connected together by means of flexible members, such as cloth or the like material, forming hinges 4c. The meeting edges of the respective sections 1, 2, and 3 are beveled, as indicated at 5, forming miters which permit the parts to be folded into position to form a rectangular body, and the front side section 3 is a little narrower than 1 the rear side section, for a purpose hereinafter set forth. A short distance from either end of each of the sections 1, 2, and 3 I form a transverse groove 6 on the inner face, running the full width of each piece and in true alinement. 1
The end pieces 7 of the box are cut away adjacent each edge for a short distance on one face, formingga circumferential reduced portion, as indicated at 8, so as to permit the reduced edges to fit into the grooves 6 of the top, bottom, and side sections when said sections are assembled.
On account of the front side 3 being a little narrower that the rear side the reduced portion on the upper edge of the end pieces 7 Will stand slightly above the top thereof, so that when the top is closed said reduced portion will enter the grooves therein, thus permitting the cover to close tight. This will not only lessen the cost of manufacture by allowing the grooves to be cut entirely across the same, but also leaves no openings through which the dirt may enter. It is to be understood that the two beveled edges of the adjacent sides of the top and the rear side section will permit the edges of the end sections to enter the grooves in the lid at the rear.
The end pieces 7 are independent of the other parts and when the box is to be shipped may be placed in any preferable position. In order to pack the box for shipping purposes, the top and one side section is folded back flat onto the outer faces of the bottom and remaining side section, which position the parts are al lowed to assume by means of the flexible hinges or connection members 4:.
When it is desired to make up the box, the reduced portion on one side of the end pieces 7 are placed in position in the groove 6 in the bottom section 2, the two side sections 3 are folded at right angles to the bottom section, and the cover is closed, thus inclosing all of the edges of said end pieces in the grooves 6 and making-a strong rigid box.
It will be readily seen that my construction of a box not only allows the same to be folded closely when collapsed, but when the. parts are assembled and the box filled the contents thereof can be fully and completely inspected without disturbingor handling them. In or der to do this, all that is necessary is to raise the lid or cover and lower either one or both sides thereof, which is permitted by means of the flexible hinges. After inspection the sides 1 can be raised, the lid closed, and the usual tack or nail driven into position, or the usual springsnap or fastening device (indicated at 9 and 10) may be used, when the original package will be restored.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein-described collapsible box, consisting of a series of sections comprising the bottom, top, and sides, the front side being narrower than the rear side, each of said sections being provided with transverse grooves extending. entirely across the same near their ends, both sides of the bottom and rear side section and one side only of the top and front side section being beveled, flexible strips secured to the outer faces of the beveled portions of the members connecting the adjacent sides and forming hinges, whereby the cover and one side section may be folded back fiat onto the outer face of the bottom and remaining side section when the box is collapsed, and. independent end pieces, each being provided with a circumferential reduced portion adapted to be seated in the groove formed in each of the sections so that their outer faces are flush with the ends of all of the sections and with their reduced upper edge extending above the top of the front side section, to permit said reduced portions to enter the groove in the cover when the latter rests upon the top of the front side section, and a single fastening means for holding the parts assembled, each of said side sections being adapted to be opened and folded back upon the bottom either sim ultaneously or independently on the hinges when the lid is raised.
