IMPROVEMENT IN VIALS.

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: I
Be it known that I, W. Sronnn How, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, State of Ohio, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Vials; and do hereby declare the following to be a full, elear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, making part of this specification.
In administering medicines, it is a very common practice to prescribe a certain numberof drops for a dose, and it is ZL'WGll-kIlOWl'l fact that it is almost an impossibility to regulate the flow from an ordinary vial, so as to ascertain the exact qunntit-y'whie'h is being delivered, the liquid being more liable to flow in a stream than to issue in drops, as desired. i g
My improvement is designed to overcome this di fiiculty, and my invention consists in providing the necks of vials with one or. more small apertures, which are closed when the cork or stopple is inserted, and which are capable of being opened, in Whole or part, byth-e partial withdrawal of thestopple,so as to allow the fluid to escape drop by drop. I
In the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a vial, embodying my improvements. 7
Figure 2 is an axial section of the'same, the stopple being partially withdrawn, and the vial inel'ined,'-so as to permit the. escape of the contents; and
Figure 3 represents-a modification of'myinvention.
A represents a bottle, jar, or via-l, having the customary neck B, which is closed by a cork, or other suitable stopplo, C. Projecting from the neck B are two small bosses or nipples, D D, havingapertures, 0101', which communicate with the interior of the vial, and' these nipples are placed diametrically opposite to one another, in order that theair mayenter at one while the fluid is eseaping at the other.
The nipples should be sulliciently near the outer.end of theneck to permit of the cork completely cutting off allcoinmunication between the apertures d and the contents of the vial, when the said cork is driven home in the neck. g
.As soon'as the vial is inclined, and the cork partially withdrawn, the fluid will begin to issue, and, by withdrawing the cork a greater or less distance, the size of the ventage may be increased or diminished, the cork acting as a valve or gate to graduate the flow. The fluid issues from the vial in well-defined drops, and a sufficient length of time ensues between the consecutive drops to permit of their being counted with perfect accuracy.
The form represented in figs. 1 and 2 has been selected as the preferred type, beeause it is easil-y'manufactured, and because it presents a symmetrical appearance, but the modified form, as seen in fig. will be found equally as ctl'ectivca'nd convenient for use. I I In this form of my invention the two nipples are omitted, and an elongated projection, E, having a slot, e,
is substituted for them. This slot occupies a position at right angles to the axis of the.neek, but it may be parallel therewith, or it may even be inclined, so as to describe a part-ofa helical curve around the outside of said neck.
In using this form of vial, it is held in sueh a position as to allow the fluid to escape at one end of the slot,
while the proper quantity of air is entering at the other.
Vials constructed as herein described will not only be useful for administering medicines, but they will also be a valuable addition to the chemist'slaboratory, as they .will enable him to measure but a. definite'quant ity of liquid of any kind without bringing it in contact with any other vessel.
I claim herein as new, and of my invention Providing the neck of a bottle, vial, or jar with one or more apertures, d d which are so located as to be closed when the cork or stopplc is completely inserted, and to be opened when the said stopple ispartially withdrawn, as and for the purposehereindescrib ed and set forth In testimony of which invention, I hereunto set my hand. v
