IVILLIAM MACDONALD AND VVILLIAM MAoD. VEALE, OF PHILADELPHIA,
PENNSYLVANIA.
PORTABLE STREET OR ROAD CAROUSEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 773,292, dated October 25, 1904.
Application filed July 10, 1903.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, IVILLIAM MACDONALD and IVILLIAM MAoD. VEALE, citizens of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Street or Road Carousels. of which the following is a specifi-' cation.
This invention relates to an amusement device of the carousel or merry-go-round order, and is designed and constructed for portability in order to be operated in streets and roads for the amusement of small children near their homes in similar manner of street pianos and organs. WVhile it is illustrated as arranged for transportation by manual power, it can very readily be arranged to attach a horse, and means are provided to turn a handorgan or any musical instrument similarly operated while carousel is operated.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention, wherein like characters of reference indicate like parts, and in which Figure 1 is a top or plan view. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a plan of the central antifriction-bearing. Fig. 4 is a section on line a, Fig. 3.
A platform 1 is mounted on a pair of rear Wheels 2 and a pair of front wheels 3, which are pivotally attached to the platform at 4:, and axle 5 has thills 6 thereto attached, by which the machine is drawn and guided. Secured to the top of platform 1 is a grooved ring 7, above which is another grooved ring, 8, and between the rings in their respective grooves 9 10 are a series of balls 11, designed to travel in the grooves. Ring 8 has a series of pockets 12, in which are inserted and secured the inner ends of a series of radial sills 13, on which the floor 14 0f the carousel is placed and which also support the outer inclosure 15. The inclosure is shown as of close or solid material, and it may be of any material which will afford absolute safety and of solid, open, or net work construction.
Passing through the center of rings 7 8 and through platform 1 and floor 1A is a centerpin 16, having a head 17 resting on a plate Serial No. 164,930. (No model.)
18 on sills 13, the pin having a key 19 to se- 5 cure it to ring 8. Below platform 1 a bevelgear 20 is secured to center-pin 16 by a key 21, so that as the gear is rotated thering 8 and the inclosure 15 will also rotate. En-
gear is supported on a pin 29, secured in an upright 30, which is attached to platform 1. A shield 31 is placed over gear 27 to protect the accidental touching of the gear or its teeth.
As the stopping-place may frequently be on an unlevel surface, means are provided for 5 to be modified or have additionalmeans to ele- 7 vate the platform.
and the platform is provided with steps 37 and hand-rails 38.
As it is proposed to operate these machines on a royalty, they will be provided with a turnstile 39 of any of the well-known suitable constructions which record when the 5 arms 40 are moved in the direction of the solid-line arrow and do not record when they move in the opposite direction, as shown by the broken-line arrow.
Inclo sure 15 may be provided with a can- 9 opy or staifsfor flags or pennants.
For the purpose of playing an organ or musical instrument shaft 23 may be extended beyond gear 20 and be provided with a pulley 41 or other suitable means for such pur- 95,
pose, or center-pin 16 may instead of shaft 23 be extended for the same purpose.
In large machines where proper facilities exist an electric or similar sate motor may be employed for rotation instead of crank-handle 28 and manual power.
\Ve claim-- A portable carousel comprising a wagon havinga platform anda rotary inclosure pivotally mounted upon said platform; steps on the platform and a hand-rail to the steps; a door in the inclosure or revolving part of the carousel adapted to communicate with the steps; and means mounted upon the platform Witnesses:
