SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 773,071, dated October 25, 1904. Application filed January 22, 1900. Serial No. 2,367. (No model.)
To all whom/it may concern:
Be itknown that I, GEORGE S. GREEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cash-Registers, of which I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in cash-registers, and has more particular relation to improvements in registers of the type patented to Thomas Carney, March 19, 1895,
and numbered 536,015.
One of the several objects of the invention is to provide improved means in the class of machine mentioned for printing a complete record of the transactions upon the detail or record strip or upon a check.
Another object is to provide improved indicating means for indicating the character of a transaction in connection with the amount.
' In the appended drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 represents an end elevation, partly in section, of the devices embodying my invention applied to a machine of the class mentioned, the cash-drawer being omitted. Fig. 2 represents a vertical transverse section through the same on the line of one of the operating-racks. Fig. 3 represents an enlarged detail perspective view of the special operating key or lever and connections, a portion of the printer-casing with index being shown in dotted lines, Fig. 4 rep resents a detail perspective view of the special indicator, the casing for the same being shown in dotted lines; and Fig. 5 represents an enlarged detail perspective view of the printing-wheels and the locking device cooperating with the special printing-wheel.
In the aforesaid drawings, 1 represents the frame of the machine; 2, the operating-keys; 3, the printing-wheels or type-carriers; 4, the platen; 5, the special printer key or lever, and 6 the special indicator. The general construction and operation of the keys, registering mechanism, amount-indicators, and printing mechanism is substantially the same as described in said patent, and reference is there- 'fore made to the same for a detail description of such parts. In general terms, however, the devices may be described as aseries of am ountkeys, registering-frames carrying racks and arranged to be operated by said keys, and sleeves carrying printing-wheels and pinions, which latter mesh with said racks. A shaft 7 supports the sleeves 8 of the said amountprinting wheels 3 and is extended beyond said wheels, so as to form a support for a special printing-wheel or type-carrier 8, similar to the wheels 3, but provided with characters designating the respective clerks who are to operate the machine or the departments into which the sales are to be divided, as desired. The said special printing-wheel is actuated to bring the desired designating character to printing position through the medium of a pinion 10, fast thereto and meshing with a segmental rack 11, fast to one end of a sleeve 12, which latter is journaled on a transverse rigid shaft or bar 13, secured to the printer-frame. This shaft is supported at its outer end by a framework 14, which also braces the shaft 7, and two other rigid companion shafts 9 and 9, fast to the frame. The inner end of the aforesaid sleeve 12 supports the angular operating key or lever 5, which is formed with a segmental rack 15, an index-finger 17, andan operating-knob 18. The index-finger is adapted toplay over an index 19, formed on the printercasing-2O and comprising a series of spaced characters which represent the respective clerks, departments, or other designations which are to be printed upon the detail-strip in connection with the amounts of the transactions. A segmental slot 21 is formed in the side of the printer-casing to allow the lever 5 to project into the proper position to cause the index-finger 17to play over the index. The rack 15 meshes "with a segmental rack 22, formed on a pivoted bell-crank lever 23, which extends through a suitable slot in the printercasing and is formed at its opposite end with a companion rack 24. This latter rack meshes with a pinion 25, fast to the journal-shaft 26 of the special indicator 6, whereby the movement of said bell-crank lever upon the operation of the special key will cause the indicator to be turned to a corresponding degree. The indicator is of the double-indication type, having duplicate sets of characters extending side by side about its periphery to effect an indication at both the back and the front of the machine. A suitable casing or hood 27, hav ing indication-openings at its back and front, incloses said special indicator, so as to hide all the indicating characters except those in the proper indicating positions. (See dotted lines in Fig. 4.)
It will be observed from the foregoing description that any movement of the special key will be accompanied by a corresponding movement of both the special indicator and the special printing-wheel or type-carrier. In order to compel an operation of said special key before an amount key can be operated, I provide the special printing-wheel or type-carrier 8 with an alining and locking star-wheel 29. This wheel is normally engaged by a pawl 30, which is fast to a sleeve 31, journaled on the shaft or rod 9. A coil-spring 32 is secured at one end to said sleeve 31 and passing partly about the same is secured at its opposite end to the printer-frame. By this means the said sleeve 31 is put under spring-pressure to normally force the pawl 30 into engagement with the star-wheel 29. The rear end of said pawl is provided with a laterally-projecting lug 32 adapted to cooperate with a lug 33, mounted on an arm 34:, formed on a cam 35, and so located as to project into the same vertical plane with the periphery of said cam. This cam is loosely mounted upon the extended end of the rotation-shaft 36 of the machine and is formed with an elongated slot 38, arranged to receive a pin 39, projecting radially from the shaft 36. A coil-spring 40 is connected at one end to said arm 34 and at its opposite end to the integral sleeve of a cam t1, fast on the shaft 36 and adapted to actuate the platenlever, as hereinafter described. hen the devices are in normal position, the pin 39 is in the forward end of the slot 38, as shown in Fig. 5, and the lug 33 is engaging the lug 32, and thereby preventing the operation of any of the amount-keys by preventing any forward movement of the rotation-shaft 36, upon which said pin 39 is mounted. Just as soon as the special printing-wheel or type-carrier is operated. by the movement of the special key-lever the star-wheel forces the pawl 30 backward at its forward end against the tension of its spring, and thus depresses the lug 32 to such an extent that the lug 33 may pass over the same, and thus no longer prevent the operation of the machine. This independent movement of the cam 35 before the regular movement of the shaft 36 is caused by the coil-spring 4O drawing it forward and is limited by the pin 39, which passes to'the opposite end of the slot 38. After the'initial movement of an amount-key and the corresponding movement of the cam with the shaft 36 the periphery of said cam will engage the lug 32, and thus lock the pawl 30 in position until the cam returns to its normal y position. if the paw 30 is not moved suiliciently by its spring to perfectly aline the printing-wheel or type-carrier 8, the move- .ment of the cam 35 with the shaft 36 will force the lug 32 upward, and thus move the pawl to properly aline the printing-wheel. The locking of the aforesaid pawl of course results in the locking of the special printingwheel or type-carrier and the special key connected thereto. By this means the special key is locked during the operation of the amount-keys, and any fraudulent operation by changing the special indication and printing-wheel or typecarrier during the time of operation of the amount-keys is thus prevented. VVhen said cam 35 has made acomplete revolution, the lug 33 strikes the lug 3,2, and thus arrests said cam; but the rotary shaft and its pin 39 continue and complete their movement, which leaves said pin in the forward end of the slot 38 and the spring 4:0 under tension.
By the above-described means the amountkeys are positively locked until after the special key has been operated to set the special printer or type-carrier and special indicator to the particular clerks initial or designating character desired, which construction prevents any oversight in regard to the operation of the special key.
By the employment of the special printing device or type-carrier a permanent record is left of the clerk who made a particular transaction in connection with the amount of said transaction, and all mistakes or errors may thus be traced to the clerk who made them. Further, this record will enable the proprietor to separate the sales of his several clerks, so that the work each has done may be readily ascertained, or if he is employing the attachment as a department designation he will be enabled to readily separate all his different classes of sales, and thus ascertain the amount of business done in each department of his store.
The special indicator, which is visible at all times both at the back and the front of the machine, is an efl'ectual check against a clerk trying to record a transaction which he wishes to disown in connection with the special indication of a fellow clerk.
The rotation-shaft 36 mentioned in different parts of this specification receives its motion from the keys and operates the platen a, substantially as shown and as fully described in the aforesaid patent.
As it is sometimes desirable to print a check in lieu of the detail-strip, I form the printercasing with a slot 20, through which the check may be inserted, so as to extend between the platen and the type-wheels. When a check TOO is so inserted, no impression is made upon the,

In a cash-register, the combination with a series of keys, a type-carrier actuated by the same, a special type-carrier, an independent key for operating the same, racks on said key, one of which engages the special typecarrier, an indicator, and a pivoted lever having racks at its opposite ends which engage respectively with the remaining key-rack and the indicator.

In a cash-register, the combination with a series of keys, of a type-carrier actuated by the same, a special type-carrier, a special key for operating the same, an alining-pawl for said special type-carrier, and means cooperating with said pawl for locking the series of keys until said pawl has been operated.

In a cash-register, the combination with a series of keys, of a type-carrier adapted to be operated by the same, a-special type-carrier, a special independent key for operating the same, a lock for the machine arranged to be operated by the special type-carrier, and means for preventing the operation of the special key after the initial movement of an amount-key and until it has returned to its normal position.

In a cash-register, the combination with a series of keys, of an amount-recording mechanism controlled thereby, a special recording device, a special key for operating the same, an alining means for said special device, and devices cooperating with said alining means for locking the series of keys until said means has been operated.
16. In acash-register, the combination with a series of keys of an amountrecording mechanism controlled thereby, a special recording device, a special key for operating the same, an alining-pawl for said special device, and means cooperating with said pawl for locking the series of keys until said pawl has been operated by the special recording device.
17. In a cash-register, the'combination with a series of keys, of an amount-recording mechanism, a special printing-wheel, a special setting-lever for said wheel, a special indicator, gearing between said indicator and setting-lever and means cooperating with the printing-wheel for locking the keys until it is operated.
18. In a cash-register, the combination with a series of keys, of an amount recording mechanism, a special recording device, an alining-pawl engaging the latter, a rotary shaft, a stop device movably mounted on said shaft, and cooperating with the pawl, and a spring connecting said stop device to the shaft.
19. In a cash-register, the combination with an operating mechanism, of a setting device; a spring-pressed stop device cooperating with said operating mechanism; and a locking device controlled by said setting device and arranged to hold said stop device in looking position against its spring tension.
20. In a cash-register, the combination with an operating mechanism, of a special typewheel, means for setting said Wheel, a lock for the operating mechanism operated by said wheel, and means connecting the lock to the operating mechanism whereby when the special wheel is moved the lock is oper ated and the operating mechanism released; the lock being permitted to immediately return to its normal position.

In a cash-register, the combination with l an operating mechanism, of a special type carrier, a locking-pawl operated by said carrier, a stop connected to the operating mechanism and arranged to spring by the pawl when the latter is operated so that the opera ting mechanism may be released and the pawl permitted to immediately assume its normal position.

In a cash-register the combination with an operating mechanism, of a special setting element, an automatic lock for the operating mechanism, means operated by the setting" element for controlling the lock and means for automatically moving the look from its locking position upon the operation of the setting element.

In a cash-register, the combination with an operating mechanism, of a setting element, a stop device for the operating mechanism, means operated by the setting element for controlling the stop device, means for automatically moving the stop device from locking position upon the operation of the setting element, and means for positively restoring the said stop-controlling means to normal position.
