UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE- ELBERT SNEDEKER, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
GARMENT-SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 772,969, dated October 25, 1904.
Application filed November 14, 1903. Serial No. 181,192. (No model.)
a To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELBERT SNE EKER, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the borough of Brooklyn, in the city of New York, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Supporters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in supporters for garments, and the supporters are especially adapted for use in connection with the trousers-supporters described and claimed in my United States Letters Patent No. 689,927, dated December 81, 1901. The supporters may, however, also be used for other purposes, as for stocking-supporters and for like uses. 1
Referring to the drawings which accompany the specification to, aid the description, Figure l is a front elevation, and Fig. 2 a side elevation, of my invention. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the same with a trousers-supporter engaged with the hook. I
Referring to Figs. 1, 2, and'3, the body a is preferably stamped of sheet metal and of any suitable shape. In the form shown in Fig. 1 said body a is cut out at g g and 72 it so as to leave tongues, which tongues are .then bent so as to form, respectively, the hook 7c and pin-point catch f, Fig. 2, said hook k and catch f being bent to opposite sides of the body a, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. Above said catch f said body is left solid" to form a protector for the pin-point on the opposite side of the pin from said catch ftha-t is, behind the pin-point, if we consider the catch f as being on'the front of the body a. Said protector c' is bent backward,-as indicated at y", to make room for the goods, and the top edge is bent slightly forward over the pinpoint to guard the same, as shown at At the bottom edge said body a is bent around to form the hinge-knuckle b, in which is hinged the lowerhorizontal bard of the loop d e of the pin c, the construction shown being a very simple and effective one for hinging the pin to the body. Said loop or bend d e is especially designed by me to afiord a shoulder, by the parts cZ-c of said loop or bend, to support that part of the garment which is gathered on the said pin 0 below the catch f and to prevent its all bunching down at the lower end of said pin, and the bend al also increases the elasticity of the pin and also decreases the strain on the knuckle when the pin-point is sprung out of the catch f. In the construction shown in Figs. 1, 2, and?) the pin is made long enough to project considerably above the catch f in order that it may penetrate the garment both below and above said catch, and thereby keep the garment straight and prevent it from turning over upon itself, as frequently happens with the waistband of trousers when my device is not used. In this construction said catch f also serves as a shoulder to hold the cloth from slipping down along the pin. Said pin 0 is of somewhat elastic wire, so as to spring well under the catch f when the pin is closed, as in Fig. 1. To open the pin, the user'pushes the pin sidewise till it is clear of the catch f, when the point will spring open a little way, being slightly bent for that purpose, so that it can be easily fully opened.
In use in connection with the trousers-supporters Z the body a is placed with the pin 0 against the inside of the trousers, the hook is being turned down, and the said pin cis fastened through the trousers-lining and the point secured under the catch f. In this position the catch f will keep the pin closed and will prevent the garment from sliding down along the pin. The hook is is then slipped over the hinge .2 of the trousers-supporter Z, which said trousers-supporter is a slight modification, but substantially similar to that shown and described in my said Letters Patent No. 689,927. Said trousers-supporter is, in eifect, a toggle-clasp which is clamped-to the shirt in the manner fully described in my said Letters Patent No. 689,927 and supports the trousers when the said hook in is engaged over the said hinge a, as hereinbefore described.
Now, having descrlbed my improvements,
I claim as my invention 1. In a garment-supporter the combination of a body, a spring-pin o hinged thereon and adapted to secure said body to an article of clothing, a catch f for the said pin, a profabric and provided with a guard for the pin- 1 tector for the point of said pin, and a hook point, substantially as described.
is on said body adapted to support a fastener, Signed at New York city this 10th day of substantially as described. November, 1903.
5 2. A garment-supporter consisting of a 1 H s r body and a pin thereon adapted to fasten said LLBER'L body to an article of clothing, a catch for said pin and a protector behind said pin bent backwardly therefrom to provide space for \Vitnesses:
