PIN-CLASP.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 715,808, dated December 16, 1902.

Be it known that I, HORTENSE T. IGEL- STROM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pin- Olasps, of which the following in a specification.

My invention relates to a fastening device or pin-clasp designed more especially for use in fastening dress-shields into the sleeves of ladies garments, but may be used for other purposes; and the invention consists, namely, in the article constructed with a pair of pointed hooks, combined with clasp and guard arranged to shield the points of the hooks and hold the clasp closed.

The invention also consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, to which reference is made and form apart of this specification, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a dressshield and a portion of a garment having a pair of my new fastening-clasps applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged front elevation of the clasp. Fig. 3 is an enlarged side view of the clasp. Fig. 4 is a view of the back of the clasp with the pointed hooks lifted or turned up in position ready for applying the clasp. Fig. 5 is a back View closed. Fig. 6 shows a modified form of the. pointed hooks.

In the drawings, 2 designates a dress-shield,

3 the armpit portion of a ladys dress, and 4 4 designate a pair of my new fasteningclasps applied for securing the shield to the garment. Each clasp comprises the two sharp-pointed hooks 5 5, substantially of the form shown, and each preferably formed integral with a bar 6. On this bar 6 is hinged the guard 7 for the points of the hooks and a clasp-plate 8 for holding the dress-shield and seam of the dress or other objects in the hooks and for holding the guard over the points of thehooks. The guard 7 and claspplate 8 are by preference made integral of a single piece of metal or other suitable material folded upon or around the bar 6, so as to form the hinge-eye or sleeve 9. The said hinge-eye or sleeve is by preference open at one side, so that the bar of the books may be slipped or sprung into place, and if made of metal no additional fastening is required save the spring action of the clasp and guard. The guard 7 is by preference formed with small pockets or depressions 10, set back to avoid dulling the points of the hooks from contact therewith. The edges of the claspplate 8, when the clasp is closed, spring in between the pointed ends of the hooks,which hooks by their spring action hold the clasp in closed position. For this purpose the extremities of the spring-hooks normally stand a distance apart somewhat less than the width of the clasp, and it is advisable to slightly bend back the clasp, as shown at 13, so that the edges of the clasp at its points of contact with the books will fall well between the hooks, and to effect a still firmer hold it is advisable to curve slightly inward the points of the hooks, as shown at 14, or for this purpose the material of the hooks may be slightly flattened to form inward bulges.

The lower edge of the clasp 8 projects below the lower edge of the guard 7 to form a thumb-piece 15 to facilitate the opening of the clasp, and for this purpose also I shall in some cases form or provide one of the pointed hooks with a lateral projection 16, so that by pressing back on this the clasp may be readily opened.

Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A pin-clasp comprisinga pair of pointed hooks or pins, a bar to which said hooks or pins are connected, at clasp-plate hinged to said bar, a guard-plate integral with said clasp-plate, a hinge-eye or sleeve for said bar formed by the clasp-plate and the guard-plate, the said hooks or pins being constructed to hold the clasp in closed position and to hold portions of the guard-plate in front of the points of the said hooks or pins, substantially as described.

2. In a pin-clasp, a clasp-plate and a guardplate made of one piece of metal, a hinge-eye or sleeve formed by said clasp-plate and guardplate, the corners of the guard-plate being extended beyond the adjacent edge of the claspplate and said extended portions being formed with depressions in combination with a bar held in said hinge-eye or sleeve, and a pair of bent hooks or pins connected to said bar, substantially as described.

3. A pin-clasp comprising a pair of pointed hooks or pins, a bar to which said pointed hooks or pins are connected, the said hooks or pins having inward bends 14, in combination with a clasp-plate adapted to spring between said bends and a guard to cover the points of the said pointed hooks or pins, the clasp-plate and guard being hinged to the said bar, substantially as described.
