OF FAIRLEE, VERMONT.
Letters Patent No. 77,195, dated April 28, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAVING-MACHINES.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, THOMAs JENKYN, of Theti'ord Centre, in the county of Orange, and State of Vermont, have invented a new and improved Sawing-Machine; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full,'clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to/the accompanying drawing". forming part of this specification.
This invention consists in a novel arrangement of circular saws and rotary cutters in connection with frames and tables, as hereinafter fully shown and described,-whereby a machine is obtained which is capable of performing various kinds of work, such as slitting boards, planks, or other stufi, cross-cut sawing, the cutting of shoulders or tenons, grooving or beading, and chamfering or cornering. In the accompanying drawings Figure 1, Sheet :No, 1, is a vertical section of my invention, taken in the line z 9:, fig. 2. I
Figure 2, a. plan or top view of the same, with the slitting-table raised Figure 3, a detached end view of a table pertaining to the same. 7 I
Figure 4, Sheet No. 2, a vertical section of tlie inverition, taken in the line y y, fig. 52
Figure 5, a; plan orv top view of the same, with the slitting-table down in a working pcsitio Figure 6, Sheet No. 3, a vertical section of the same, taken in the line 2 z; fig. 9.
Figure 7, a vertical section of the same, taken in the line 2 z, fig. 8.
Figure 8, a plan or top view of a portion of the-machine, with the chamfering and cornering-bod attached.
Figure 9, a plan or top view of a portion of the same, with the grooving and beading-table attached.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. I
The framing of the machine is composed of two distinct parts, A B, connected together so as to form one structure. On the framing A there are'placed two horizontal saw-arbors, O D, ouwhich circular saws E F are placed, the saw-arb'ors being driven by belts a a from a driving-shaft, .G, in the lower part of the portion Act the framingmf the machine.
On the upper part of the portion A of the framing there is secured, lay-hinges la, a table,.H, having a slot, 0, made in it for the saw E to work through, and having upon it a gauge, I, and a bed, J, the latter being pro vided with a longitudinal. central bead or rail, d. On thisfoed J a slide, K, is placed, the latter having a longitudinnlgroove, e, made in its under side, to receive the head or rail 0! of the bed J. This slide K is provided at one end with a stop,j; against which one end of the board, plank,-or'other stufi to be operated upon is placed. This slide K and the saw E are used for slitting, a proper width of-cut being obtained bv adjusting the gauge 1- This will be fully understood by referring to fig. 5. y
On the upper part of the portion B of the framing there are placed two parallel ways, L L, which are securedto the fi-xed bars 9 g on B, by means of screws passing through vertical slots in the ways and into the bars g. These 'ways are allowed to rise and fall freely, and they rest upon inclined surfaces h h on bars M,
which are placed transversely in the portion B of the framing, and connected by longitudinal bars N'N, through one of which a screw, 0, passes, by turning which the bars M may be moved, and the ways L L'adjusted higher or lower, as may be required. On these ways L L, a cutting-0E or cross-cut table, P, .is placed, which is used with the saw F; and it is for the purpose of raising. and lowering the-table P that the ways L L are made adjustable,- a variation in the thickness of the stud rendering this necessary, and the adjustment of 'the table also admitting of the saw F being used for cutting shoulders and tenons on the stud.
Q represents a table used for slitting and halving work together. This table-has two pendent strips, R R, attached to it by'hinges, it. The strip R has two slots y'j', made longitudinally or vertically in it, and the other strip, R, has one slot, is, made in it, In using this table Q, the hinged table H is raised, (see figs. 1 and 2,)
and the table Q applied to the part A of the framing by slipping the strips R Rover horizontal screws 1 lm in the par'tA, the screw m serving as s set-screw. This table Q isjprovided' withan adjustable gauge, S.
. T represents e table; whieh has a. convex'upp'efsurfuee; and is secured, when in use, to the hinged table H. This table T has a Y-shaped groove, n, made "longitudinally in it; and a' slot, 0, is made entirely through the n table, to allow the upper part of a cutter-head, U, to work in, said cutter-head being placed in the 'arbor of the saw F. This table T and ou tter-heed U are used for chamferirrg or eornering work. I
"V is a. table, which is used for bending and grooving-work. This tehle is attached to the hinged table H in the place of bed J, the latter being detached. The table V has a slot, 13, made in it, to receiue o. cutter-head, W, provided with grooving or be'adingeutters, 12 the'cuttenheadW being pfiied on the arbor of saw F. r
V This machine is extremely simple in construction, and may be constructed nt a .very smolleost beyond that of an ordinsryoircular-saw machine. The various kinds .of work-that may be performed by it renders it extremely valuable in the shop of a joiner or worker in wood. Y e
Having thus described-my invention, what I claim es new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
- The construction and arrangement of the reciprocating table P, hinged table H, tables Q T V, suw-arbprs (1D, and cutter-heads U W, all operating upon the seine frame, in the manner and for the purposes herein shown and described. I
