Description

PATENTED OCT. 4, 1904.
H. HAES.
BILLIARD CUE AND TIP THEREFOR.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 2'7, 1902.
NO MODEL.
UNITED STATES Patented October 4, 1904.
PATENT OFFICE.
BlLLlARD-CUE AND TIP THEREFOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 771,727, dated October 4, 1904.
Application filed June 2'7, 1902.
To all whom, it may concern-.-
tips therefor, and has for its principal object to construct these devices so as to enable the tips to be very readily and securely fixed to the cues and the newly-tipped cues to be immediately thereafter available for use. This result has not been attained by the means hitherto ordinarily employed, because the glue or cement generally used for fixing the tips to the cues takes an appreciable time to set, during which the cues cannot be used. Moreover, before a new tip can be applied to the cue any old glue or cement adhering to the latter must first be carefully removed, so that a level seating may be provided for the new tip, all of which involves a somewhat cgnsiderable expenditure of time.
According to my invention I overcome all the above-mentioned difiiculties by providing the cue with a cup and the tip with a socket having a shank fitting into the said cup.
By the term tip, as hereinafter employed, I mean a device which comprises a strikingpiece consisting of only one layer of leather or other suitable material, together with its socket.
In the accompanying drawings, which illus trate, on an enlarged scale, the Way of carrying this invention into effect, Figure 1 is an elevation, partly broken away, of the tip in its socket. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the cup for receiving the shank of the said socket.
Fig. 3 is a plan of the said cup; and Fig. 4 is an elevation, partly broken away, showing the devices represented in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 applied to a cue, of which latter only a portion is included in the figure.
The tip 6 is formed with a slightly-reduced portion 0, and the male screw or shank 7, which,
Serial No, 113,480. (No model.)
as shown in Fig. 1,is of substantially smaller diameter than the tip 6, is fitted thereto by means ofasocketf formed integrally therewith and in which the tip may be secured by one or more indentations f 3 f as shown, or by any other suitable means. The cup (0 is preferably provided with a flange a ,'and, as shown in Fig. 4, is sunk into a recess it, formed in the end of the cue 5, and secured thereto most conveniently by a central screw 0, pointsz'z', projecting from the under side of the flange a and engaging in the end of the one 6, being provided for preventing the cup from turning about the screw 0.
WVhen it is required to replace the beforedescribed tip, all that is necessary is to unscrew the old one and tightly screw the new one into its place. For these purposes pliers may be used adapted, if desired, to engage the indentations f f in the tip-socket f One or more spring-tongues, somewhat resembling the points 2' a, may be provided on the under side of the tip-socket f in such position as to enable it or them to engage with holes or depressions formed in the flange (f. This would insure against the turning backward of the tip on the cue.
What I claim as myinvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s-
1. The combination with a billiard-cue and a tip consisting of one layer of material, of a screw-threaded cup fixed permanently to the cue, a recess in the cue to receive the cup, a flange on the cup to bear on the end of the one around the recess, a socket in which the tip is permanently and immovably fixed and a screw-threaded metallic shank integral with the socket adapted to enter the cup and engage with the screw-threads thereof substantially as hereinbefore described.
2. The combination with abilliard-cue and a tip consisting of one layer of material, of a screw-threaded cup fixed permanently to the one, a recess in the cue to receive the cup, a flange on the cup to bear on the end of the one around the recess, points in the flange engaging the cue to prevent the cup from be- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as ing rotated thereon, a socket in which the tip my invention Ihave signed my name {in presis permanently and irnrnovably fixed and a once of two subscribing Witnesses.
