BOTTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 771,714, dated October 4, 1904. Application fil d March 14,1904. Serial No. 198,165. (No model.)
To ctZZ whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that we, HARVEY CoALE and LEWIsS. GREENSFELDER, citizens of the United States, residing at Baltimore, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
In an application filed by us on the 20th day of January, 1904. Serial No. 189,901, we have shown and described an improved closure for bottles adapted to cover the throat and end or lip of the bottle and having sealing engagement with the bottle interiorly and exteriorly. This form of closure requires a special form of bottle, and the present application is intended to present a form of bottle capable of being used with the closure made the subject of the application referred to and capable of use also with the closure made the subject of an application filed by us January 20, 1904, Serial N 0. 189,902.
The present invention consists of a bottle having an inner groove to permit of the engagement therewith of a closure or a part of a closure adapted to be expanded thereinto and having an outer shoulder or bead adapted to be engaged by an overhanging flange.
1n the accompanying drawings we have represented in Figure l a sectional View of a head of a bottle embodying our improvement, while in Fig. 2 the sectional view also shows the improved form of closure shown in case Serial No. 189,901 as this closure appears when in place upon the bottle-head.
Our improved form of bottle is provided upon the exterior of the head or upper end with an enlargement 3, which is grooved to form an annular bead l a suitable distance below the top, the under side of which bead forms a shoulder capable of locking engagement with the overhanging flange or rim B on such a closure as that shown in Fig. 2. Within the throat of the bottle, below the mouth thereof, is an annular groove 2 in a slightly lower plane than the bead 1, and this groove forms an interior shoulder into which the inner part of the stopper 0 of cup shape is adapted to be expanded. The external bead and the internal groove are simultaneously formed by a tool applying at the same instant internal and external pressure.
While the bottle as shown is necessary to a closure of the type illustrated in Fig. 2, we do not limit ourselves to the use of the bottle in this connection alone.
What we claim is- 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a bottle having a groove formed within its throat and a shoulder or bead formed by a groove on the exterior of the bottle-head, the inner and outer grooves being approximately in the same plane, substantially as described.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a bottle having a groove formed within its throat adapted to have a closure expanded therein and an external shoulder formed by a groove on the exterior of the bottle head adapted to have the flange of a sealing-closure forced into locking engagement therewith, substantially as described.
3. As an improved article of manufacture, a bottle having a rounded crest or top termimating in an interior and exterior groove.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
