"I he operation 'is ais-follows: The rope to which the dredge isattached is secured tothe drum C. When the rope is 'tob e wound around the drum,- the segment F israised by means of the lever`e,lso tl1`at when, then, the drum is pushed4 towards it and the gear-wheel c, by means o f the treadle E, the teeth of the ring Adwill mesh int'o thoseof the segment, while, at' the same time, the wheels 6 and c lwill gear together.

, Should the dredge strike against an article, the. strain on the rope will at once draw the drum oil' the wheel c, and .will thereby disegage the drum fromv the shaft, so that the rope may unwind 'without affecting in thc least the motion of the shaft. t
While the drum is thus drawn back, the segment falls down, u ntil the pin h, which tits through tho slot in the rod e, reaches the lower end of that slot, asin iig. 4.. The roller g will thon, with its odge, touch the end of the drum C, and will Vinrrevolved 'by ,the same, thus not hindering its motion, but the` drum F will, in this position, prevent the drum from sliding towards the wheel c, and from becoming thereby connected with the shaft B.
The object of the arm Fis, therefore, to form a stop for keeping the shaft and drum outl of goor, when the I rope is unwinding, so that no accident can occur by the crank revolving.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patentv 1. An oyster-Winding apparatus, cousstingof the shaft B, sliding drum C, gear-wheels bre, and d, and pvoted segment F, all made anti operating substantially as and for Vthe purpose herein shown and described.
2. Tlicilrum C, whenvarrangcd so that it can turn antl`slido on the shaft B, and when combined with the gears b t", and withl tho'lever D, all made and operating substantially asset forth. n
