REGISTERING-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 771,092, dated September 27, 1904.
Application filed December 3, 1903. Serial No. 183,642. (No model.)
To (LZZ 1072 0771, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OHN GAELINGTON RA- MEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rome, in the county of Floyd and State of Georgia, have invented a new and Improved Registering-Lock, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved lock which shall register unlocking thereof and at the same time indicate the number of times it has been unlocked.
With the above objects in view I have invented the novel lock which will hereinafter be fully described.
The invention consists of the special construction, arrangement, and combination of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which I will describe as follows:
Figure 1 is avertical sectional view through my improved lock, taken on line 1 l of Fig. 3
and looking in direction indicated by the arrow, the view showing the parts in normal locked position. Fig. 2is a similar view, but taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 3 and looking in the same direction, the view showing the parts in unlocked position and the indicating mechanism adjusted to registering position. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken on line 3 3, Fig. 2, and looking in direction of the arrow; and Fig. 4c is a detail vlew showing the perforatmg-pin-shoving devlce.
In the practice of my invention I may employ any form of lock-case A adapted for containing my improved registering and looking devices. While I have illustrated my invention in connection with a lock employing a shackle B, by simple modification it may be adapted for use with sliding-bolt and other well-known types of lock.
In describing my invention as applied to A the type of lock illustrated in the drawings,
C denotes what I will term a lower drum or reel, and D an upper drum or reel. On the drums O and D, I arrange a tape E, which may be endless, as shown, or consist of a single length and be wound from one drum upon the other. In the casing a window or sightopening F is provided, and spaced therefrom in the casing a tape guide or support G is fixedly arranged. The tape guide or support is provided with an opening H, adapted to receive the forward or perforating end of a yielding pin I, slidingly supported by spaced brackets J J The pin I is made yielding by a spring K, arranged thereon with one end secured to the pin and its other end confined by the bracket J. (See Figs. 1 and 2.)
L denotes the shackle-locking device, having pivotal support at M. The lower end of the locking device L is connected with an upper extension N of a suitably-supported oscillating arm O by a link P. The arm O is adapted for engagement with the rear end of the yielding pin I througha lateral projection Q. (See Figs. 2 and 4.) The lock may be worked by a key R, entered through a suitable opening S in the case A, which when turned as indicated by the arrow (see Fig. 1) will engage the oscillating arm O.
It will be noticed that the upper drum or reel D is provided with a ratchet-wheel T, adapted to be engaged by a yielding dog or pawl V, having suitable pivotal support on the hinged end of the shackle B.
The operation of my improved indicating and registering lock will be understood from the above description. The tape E is intended to have numbers on its face or outer side ranging from 1 up to any desired number for which it is adapted. Now obviously when the key is inserted in the keyhole S and turned as indicated by the arrow (see Fig. 1) it will swing the arm O, and thereby through the lateral projection push the pin I against tension of its spring K, and thereby cause the pins forward or pointed end to perforate the tape and cancel a number thereon. At the same time and through the extension N and link P the latch L will be worked, throwing back its locking end, and thereby free the shackle from locked condition. Continued turning of the key R to position whereby it may be withdrawn or out of engagement with the oscillating arm O will allow the pin to be retracted from perforating position. Now when the shackle B is opened or turned from the position illustrated in Fig. 1 to the adjusted position shown by Fig. 2 it is apparent that the drum or reel D will be turned through operation of the pawl V and the ratchet-wheel T. Movement of the drum or reel D is limited to the space of one or more teeth on the ratchet- Wheel and pushing action imparted through the pawl V, which is effected upon turning the shackle to raised position.
A look constructed according to my invention has merit over all similar locks in the construction involved, as well as the simplicity of its working parts, which are not so liable to get out of order. It has utility or usefulness in recording its unlocking and the registering of the number of times it has been worked or unlocked.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination in a lock employing a case and pivoted shackle, of a pivotal-acting latch, an oscillating arm, means connecting the said latch and oscillating arm, the lower end of the oscillating arm being adapted for engagement and to be shoved, upon turning action of a suitable key, upper and lower drums and a tape which is unwound from one drum and wound upon the other drum, a yielding pin adapted in operation, for perforating the said tape, means on the oscillating arm adapted in JOHN GARLINGTON RAMEY.
