Description
(No Model.) I
T. B. ASHPORD.
. INDIUATOR LOCK. No. 307,254. Patented Oct. 28, 1884.
INVENTOR: Q. C/[a/ ATTORNEYS.
THOMAS BUTLER ASHFOBD, OF CLINTON, NORTH CAROLINA, ASSIGNOR TO BIAS UNDERVVOOD, OF SAME PLACE.
INDICATOR-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 307,254, dated October 28, 1884.
Application filed June .2, 1884. (N model.)
To all whom, it may concern: rel-key fitting upon the key-pin k. To the Be it known that I, THOMAS B. ASHFORD, bolt, however, is pivoted a spring-pawl, H, of Clinton, in the county of Sampson and State which engages with the ratchet-wheel G, and of North Carolina, have invented certain'new which ratchet-wheel is provided also with a and useful Improvements in Indicator-Locks, spring-detent, I; so that as the boltmoves back of which the following is a description. in unlocking the shackle-bar this spring-pawl Figure 1 is a front view, and Fig. 2 a rear catches into the teeth of the ratchet-wheel and view, of the lock. Fig. 3 is an interior view turnsthe. latterthe distance ofonetooth. Then from the front with theiace-plate turned back as the bolt moves back to lock the shackle- IO on its pivot. Fig. 4 is an edge view in secbar the detentlholds the ratchet-wheel while tion through the line m 00 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is the pawl H is moving back to secure a new a sectional view of the case through the line position on the wheel. On the back side of y 3 of Fig. 3. the ratchet-wheel Gthere is a series offigures My invention relates to that class of locks arranged in a circular row, which series ot'fig- 15 known as indieatonlocks, the object being u res show one by one through an opening, 0, to prevent the lock from being opened and in the back of the case, as in Fig. 2, and which then closed. again by an unauthorized person, figure changes with each movement of the to which end an indicator-wheel is set to show ratchet-wheel until a complete revolution has a different number each time the lock is been made. Now, to prevent the lock from 20 opened, and which change in the numbers, being repeatedly locked and unlocked untila showing through an opening in the lock, gives complete revolution has been made, and then proof of the surreptitious opening of the lock. reset upon the same number, a projection, (Z,
My invention consists in the peculiar conis attached to the ratchet-wheel, and I form struction and arrangement of the farts of the holes in in through the face-plate and case, and

Now, when the projection (Z the lock, which may be of any desirable form, comes around to the shackle-wire of the seal, and B is the face-plate,which is connected to the latter acts as a stop to prevent any further the'lock-case, as follows: The bolt which seprogress without breaking the wire. This 0 cures the shackle-bar C also passes through and seal may be put in place by the railroad comforms a hinge or pivotal joint for the face pany, and kept there until the ratchet-wheel, plate at I). Then at the lower portion of the by successive legitimate openings and closlock-case is attached an upwardly-projecting ings, has shown all its numbers, and then a new fiangeor lip, c, beneath which the lower edge seal is to be put in place. As a still further 5 of the faceplate B passes when closed down precaution, I place a spring, 0, against the over the lock-case. Then to hold the face back of the case, which spring has one or more plate down to this position said face-plate is sharp points adapted to enter a hole, 0", in the provided at the point where the shackle-bar case and over which hole is placed a piece of enters the case with a perforated flange, a, paper, 0. Then on the ratchet-wheel is ar- 0 resting upon fiangeb outside the case, through ranged a lug, Z, and when the ratchet-wheel 0 which flange c the shackle bar passes, and makes a complete revolution the lug Zpresses through the slot in which shackle bar the upon the spring 0 and forces the points of the bolt E passes, and by which construction the latter through a piece of paper, 1), thus leavface-plate is firmly held to the case of the look ing evidence of the complete revolution of the .5 whenever the latter is locked or closed, and wheel, so that even if the wheel be reset on 5 thus the bolt holds the shacklebar, and the the same number the surreptitious opening of shackle-bar holds the face-plate against being the lock can be detected.
pulled out or turned on its pivot. To hold the ratchet-wheel against the back The tumbler F and bolt E of the lock are of of the case, a washer, g, rests between it and 50 the usual pattern, and are operated by a barthe faceplate. roo
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is 1. The combination of the loeleease having flange c, the shackle-bar C, the face-plate B, hinged upon the fulcrum-pin of the shacklebar, and having a perforated flange, 0, outside of the case, and the bolt adapted to lock the shackle-bar and hold the faceplate, as described.
2. The combination, with the loek-easehaving opening 0 and the belt, of a pawl attached to the bolt, a ratchet-wheel, G, having lug 7, and provided with numbers 011 its rear side, and the spring (1, having a point adapted to be
