SAT'rnnLnn, ot New Haven, in the county of`New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Machines for ltIal ing Slate-Pencils; and 'I do hereby declare the following, when taken inconneetion with theaccompanyingdrawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be atull, clear, and exact description of the sama/and which said drawings constitute part of` thisV specification, and represent, in-.

This invention relates to an improvementin the manufacture of pencils from slabs of slate or other. material, the object being to construct a machinerwhich, 'receiving the slab atene point, automatically conducts the slab into the machine, and, passing through, the pencils are completely formed, and so discharged from the machine; and the invention consists in combining, with the-proper feeding-rolls, two series of cutters, te operate upon opposite sides of the slab, and having. arranged groovcd beds or plates corresponding to the cutters, and in such relative position 'to the cutters that the said grooved lplates or bed conduct and support the slab while being cut, andthe pencils after they are out. y
To enahle'others to construct and use my improvement, I will proceed to describe the same as illustrated in the accompanying drawings. The two heads,'with the cutters inserted, are bolted together inl any convenient manner, so Yas to hold the cutters-firmly in their proper position; then when, from use, it shall be 'necessary to sharpen the cutters, remove n them from the head and grind from the edge, that' is, upon the surface, between one cutterl and the next; then reinsert the cutters in their proper position. This grinding in nowise disturbs -the grooves, but would shorten the point, so that it wouldnotnaturally-bear against thc ilange around the head; =therefore, to adjust the cutters, and always retain them in their proper position, that is, bearing against the flange of the head, I insert through the several cutters set-screws, as denoted at n, iig. 5, which pass through the cutters and bear upon the shaft, so that, by turning the screws .into the cutters, the cutters will beforced out until 'they bear against the ange upon the edgeof the head, and thus the saidltlange ou the head acts as a guide for setting the cutters, and insures their being set always in the right position, and prevents any ypossible error in the settingf Beneath the rst cutters, a, is arranged 'a flat fixed bed, C, above which are arranged, in proper bearings,
elastic feed-rolls, D. Forward of the cutters a, and below, are arranged other similar feed-rolls.E,-as seen in figa' 8, and above the said feed-rolls, a grooved plate, F, (see figs. 3 and 4,) grooved to correspond to the first cutters, a, and beneath the said plate F, and forward of `the'feedrolls E, are arranged upon a shaft, H, cutters like or similar to the cuttersa', and so that, with the grooves in 'thelplate F, they form completely round spaces, as seenV in Iig. 4.y 'Forward of the last cutter is arranged a bed, L'lgirooved `in likemanner to the plate F,as seen. in tig.

. The feed-rolls and cutters are caused to revolve by belts 'applied thereto, as seen in fig. v1, or in `other c onvenient manner. The cutters shouldrevplve so as to cutl back -toxyard the feed-rolls, that is to say, should n:revolve in an opposite direction to the feed-rolls. The feed-rolls are provided with springs, d, to allow them to yield to. dieent thicknesses of the Imaterial tobe cut. The slab is entered upon the bed C, and passed into the rolls D, and by the saidrolls D is Bresentedte therst cutters, a, which cut into the slab, and ferm onehalf of thje pencils. The cut or grooved slab advancing, passes into the grooves in theplate F, and supported by the rolls E, `is advanced to the under cutters, which cut the under surface of the slab vin like manner as the first cutters Acut the upper side, and separate the pencils, and form them completely round. The slab still advancing, thezcut pencils enter the grooves inthe bedI, and beneath Vthe rolls c, and are thus conducted-from'the machine to -be cutto their proper lengths. Thus the machine, receiving the slab at the rear end, conducts it through,
forming the pencils completely round, and iin the mostperfect manner, and discharging them finished at the formed end, and this without the intervention of manual' labor, from theentrance of the material to tlfe ex'it of'4 the pencils.
Having thus fully described my invention, -whatl claim as new and useful,l and desire -to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination of Vthe two series of cutters, each series formed so that the first half forms the pencil, and while the second completes the pencil, and combined with the grooved plate F and correspondingly grooved bedI, i'n relative position toeach other, and to the twoseries of 'cutters described, sc as to form-guides from the rst series of. cutters to tbe second, and from the second to the discharge, substantially in the manner herein set forth.V
