SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. '77 0,579, dated September 20, 1904.

To all whom it Wtay concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN HEss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Magneto-Generators, of which the following is a specification.
In the construction of magneto-electrical generators it is found that there is a considerable leakage of the lines of force around the end of the armature; and the object of my invention is to provide a construction which will in a large measure prevent such leakage.
A further object is to produce a less expensive machine which will still be eificient and neat'in appearance.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.
Figure 1 is an axial vertical section. Fig. 2 is an axial horizontal section with the armature removed; Fig. 3, a section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a detail.
In the drawings, 10 10 indicate a pair of permanent magnets of the usual form. Secured to the adjacent ends of magnets 10 are pole-pieces 11 11, each of which is provided at each end with an overhanging lip 12, as clearly shown in Fig. 4, which is adapted to embrace an inclosing tubular casing 13. Casing 13 is provided at opposite sides in its middle with openings 14:, through which the central portions of the pole-pieces 11 may project, the said casing being held in position by the overhanging embracing-lips 12, which are clamped upon the casing by means of a bolt 15. Each end of the casing 13 is closed by a movable head 16, which heads are provided with axial bearingsgvithin which is journaled the armature-shaft 17. The casing 13 is made of a comparatively non-magnetic material-such, for instance, as brassand thus serves to prevent the lines radiating from the ends of the pole-pieces from passing through the ends of the armature. The shell 13 also serves to inclose the armature and make a practically dust-proof construction.
It will be noticed that the construction described is exceedingly cheap. The casing 13 may be of commercial tubing, and the polepieces 11 are separate from the magnets. Casing 13, with heads 16, forms the main body of the machine, while the pole-pieces and magnets are held in position by the single bolt 15.
I claim as my invention 1. In a magneto-generator,the combination, with the magnets, of an armature journaled between the arms thereof, and an inclosing non-magnetic casing surrounding said armature at its ends, said casing being cut away at its middle opposite active portions of the magnet.
2. In a magneto-generator, the combination with the magnet, of the pole-pieces carried thereby, the separate casing 13 mounted between the arms thereof composed of non-magnetic material, and the armature journaled in said casing.
3. In a magneto-generator, the combination with the magnets and the armature journaled between the poles thereof, of a separate nonmagnetic casing interposed between the opposite arms of the magnet and surrounding the ends of the armature.
4c. In amagneto-generator, the combination of the magnets and pole-pieces thereof having the overhanging lips 12, of the inclosing nonmagnetic casing arranged between the arms of the magnet and having cut-away portions through which the main portion of the polepieces project, and an armature journaled in said casing, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. Amagneto-generator consisting of a central shell having cut-away portions at opposite sides of its middle, pole-pieces set in said cut-away portions, a magnet straddling the casing and clamped, upon the pole-pieces, and an armature journaled in said casing.
6. In an electric generator, the combination of a tubular casing having opposite openings in the sides thereof, pole-pieces extending into said casing through'said openings, bearingheads secured to the ends of said casing and an armature journaled in said heads.
