Description
N0'M 1, E. STOREY. ELECTRIC MOTOR.

UNTTED STATES PATENT Enron.
IMLE E. STOREY, OF HORNELLSVlLLE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE STOREY ELECTRIC DRILL AND POWER COMPANY, OF COLORADO.
ELECTRIC MOTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters iatent No. 548,402, dated October 22, 1895.
Application filed January 28, 1898. Serial No. 460,070. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that LIMLE E. STOREY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hornellsville, in the county of Steuben and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Motors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to electric motors,
I0 the object being to produce a motor which shall be symmetrical and compact in shape, cheap to manufacture, and efficient in operation.
The invention has special reference to a motor having a disk-armature.
The invention consists in general of a hollow body or shell constituting the core of the field-magnet and inclosing a field-magnet coil, a disk-armature, and two pole-pieces, the last projecting from the inner walls of the shell.
The invention will be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a longitudinal section of the 2 5 motor, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on line a: a: of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings by letter,A represents a cylindrical, spherical, or other closedin hollow body or shell. It is made in two 0 parts joined together at a. This shell incloses a field-magnet coil B, which hugs the inner wall and stands at right angles to the axis of the shell, along which the armatureshaft 0 is located. The heads a. a. of the 5 shell are of magnetic material, and from each of them there is an inward projection a having a flat face a standing in a plane at right angles to the armature-shaft and constituting a pole-piece. These pole-pieces are located on opposite sides of the shaft, and as they are connected with the magnetic core on opposite sides of the coil they will have opposite polarities. Between these two polepieces and mounted upon the shaft is a diskarmature 0. By constructing the machine 5 in this way an armature of greater diameter may be used and the machine shortened in the direction of its shaft. Such a machine is particularly adapted for a fan-motor. The commutator 0 may be placed either inside or outside of the shell.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- An electric motor consisting of a hollow body or shell of magnetic material made in two closed cup-shaped parts, secured together and inclosing a single field magnet coil, an armature whose working faces are at right angles to its shaft, and pole pieces projecting inward from the parts of the shell and facing 6:) the sides of the armature, the armature bearings being located in said cup shaped parts respectively, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I subscribe my signature in presence of two witnesses.
