IMPROVED KETTLE FOR MANUFACTURING C-OMFITS.
Specitieation forming part of Letters Patent l\'o. 7.702, dated October 8. Natl.
the accompanying drawing, which t'orms part-- el' this specilitmtion, and represents a view in perspective ot' my improved comtit-pan, and the machinery by ywhich it is operated.
In the manufacture oteomtits it. customary to introduce the seeds or other substances which t'orm the cores ot' thecomiitsinto a pan, which is swung to `and t'ro over a tire a workman, who requires considerable experience in the business to enable him to give the propel' movement to the pan, As soon as the seeds are properly warmed, the sirup is introduced in successive portions, and the swinging ofthe pan is continued until the cores are coated to the requisite thickness.
' lThe object ot' my invention is to obviate the disadvantages incident to this system, and to enable asingle workman unskilled in the peculiar manipulation above mentioned to conduct the operation of. several pans, thus dispensing with the great amount ot' labor ordinarily required, while at the same time the quality ot' the product is improved.- The apparatus employed by me to etl'ext this purpose consists o!" a pan of copper or other suitable material mounted in an inclined position upon a spindie, to which a rotaryinotion is imparted by means ot' suitable mechanical devices.
In the accompanying drawing, Ais the eopper pan. It may be made in a manner similar to that of the ordinary hand apparatus; but, as it is operated mechanically, it may be considerably increased in size. This pan is secured in ail-inclined position (as represented in the aecompanying,` drawing) to the upper extremity ot' an iin-lined spindle, B, supported in boxes a c upon a t'rame. A leveled wheel,
other mechanical device", by means ot' which the motion of the prime mover of the establishment can be imparted to it. The pan projects over a fire, by which thematerials inthe pan are heated.
In working with this improved apparatus itl is obvious that the hand-shaking is replaced by the rotary movement ot' the pan, and hence the labor required to effect this part ot'the operation is saved. The feeding ofthe sirup and the management ofthe pan require much' less labor and experience than the hand-shaking, and with my improvedapparatus a single boy van conduct the operations ot t'our such pans. It will thus be seen that, a boy can aecomplish the work ol' four, experienced men. It has also been proved by actual practice that a heavier srup tha-n that usually employed can be used with advantage, and that the work is lett with a bettersurtace than that producml by the old hand-pan, while at the salne time the quality of the product t'rom the regular movement of the pan is improved.
Itis olwiousthata continuons rotary moltion of the pan is not the only one which will produce agood result, but that the motionmay be intermittent in either direction or vibratory without materially atecting the re- Sult. The agitation ot' the materials in the pan mayalso be increased by the addition ot' radial or inclined projections on the inside of the pan. These, as the pan tur`ns,will litt up the eomtits ,and allow them to drop, thus completely turning them over and bringing all parts ot'theI mass in cont-act with the hottest 'portions ofthe pan.
That I claim as my invention, and desire to vsecure by Letters Patent, is
