PUNCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 770,239, dated September 13, 1904. Original application led September 23, 1903, Serial No. 174,261. Divided and this application filed May 5, 1904. Serial To @ZZ whom, t puny con/cern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS I-I. LovnJoY, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Punches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relatesto improvements in punches for punching holes in metal.
Metal-punches have heretofore generally been made in the form of a solid tool or punch which is secured to the stock by a threaded coupling or nut, a separate tool or punch being required for each different size of hole desired to be formed. This requires a very large number of punches or tools and also considerable expense, and if one of the punches or tools of a larger size happens to break, although the fracture may occur at its point or smaller end, the whole tool is ruined and requires to be thrown away. Also in the larger sizes of solid punches difiiculty is frequently experienced in properly hardening and tempering the tool without causing internal strain, weakness, and liability to fracture.
The object of my invention is to provide a compound metal-punch so that the same punch may be used for punching holes of a plurality of di'erent sizes and so that in case of breakage, which usually occurs at the smaller' or pointed end of the punch, only a comparatively small and inexpensive piece of the hardened tempered tool-steel will be lost, thus effecting a very great saving of expense.
My invention consists in the means I employ to accomplish this result4that is to say, it consists, in connection with the punch-stock and threaded coupling or nut, of a hollow punch or punch-shell and asmaller solid punch fitting or nesting in the hollow punch or shell and a thrust-block fitting in the hollow punch or shell and interposed between the smaller solid punch and the punch-stock, so that the smaller solid punch will serve, in combination with the hollow punch or shell, as the lower or pointed end thereof in making larger holes of the size of the shelland also serve as the (No model.)
small punch in making' holes of the size of the solid punch.
My invention further consists in the novel construction of parts and devices and in the novel combinations of parts and devices herein shown and described.
As the punch-shell which is used in my in` vention in forming the larger-sized holes is hollow, it will be readily understood that it can be easily hardened and tempered without danger or injury, and as in my invention any breakage of the punch-point only affects the small solid punch, which is a comparatively small piece of tool-steel, it can be removed at little expense, and the punch-shells, which are the larger and more expensive pieces, are seldom liable to fracture.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in vertical section, of a punch embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section through the compound punch. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig'. 1 is a detail perspective view of the small solid punch.
YIn said drawings, A represents the die; X, the plate of steel or other metal to be punched; A2, the stripper-plate; B, the threaded coupling or nut, and C the stock to which the punch is secured by the coupling or nut and by which it is reciprocated or operated.
` D is a hollow punch or punch-shell used for making' larger-sized holes, and D is a smaller solid punch fitting and nesting in the hollow punch or shell l).
F is a thrust-block interposed between the smaller solid punch Dl and the threaded stock C, thethrust-block F fitting in the hollow punch or shell D and abutting at its lower end against the head d of the lower or solid punch D and abutting at its upper end directly against the threaded stock C.
The head (Z of the'solid punch D has a conical or flaring exterior shoulder cZ, iitting the corresponding interior beveled shoulder Z2 of the hollow punch or shell D, and the head or upper end Z3 of the hollow punch or shell D has a corresponding exterior beveled shoulder di, fitting the corresponding interior beveled shoulder Z) of the coupling or nut B.
I clairn- 1. In a punch, the combination with the punch-stock and threaded coupling or nut having an internal shoulder, of a hollow punch having an external shoulder or head engaging the internal shoulder of the coupling, and provided with an internal shoulder, and a smaller solid punch fitting and nesting in the hollow punch and having an external shoulder or head engaging the internal shoulder 'of the hollow punch, and a thrust-block fitting in the hollow punch and abutting' at one end against the stock and at its other end against the solid punch, substantially as specified.
2. The combination with a punch-stock and coupling, of a hollow punch connected to the punch-stock and coupling, and provided with an internal shoulder, of a smaller solid punch iitting and nesting in the hollow punch and provided with an external shoulder or head on the punch-shell, and a thrust-block F fi't.
ting within said punch-shell, and abutting at one end against the punch-stock and its other end against said punch D', Substantially as specified.
