SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 770,238, dated September 13, 1904.

To all whom, it flea/y concern:
Be it known that I, THoMAs H. LOVEJOY, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have'invented anew and useful Improvement in Punches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in punches for punching holes in metal.
Metal-punches have heretofore generally been made in the form of a solid tool or punch which is secured to the stock by a threaded coupling or nut, a separate tool or punch being required for each different size of hole desired to be formed. This requires a very large number of punches or tools and also considerable expense, and if one of the punches or tools of a larger size happens to break, although the fracture may occur at its point or smaller end, the whole tool is ruined and requires to be thrown away. Also in the larger size of solid punches difiiculty is frequently experienced in properly hardening and tempering the tool without causing internal strain, weakness, and liability to fracture.
The object of my invention is to provide a compound metal-punch so that the same punch may be used for punching holes of a plurality of different sizes and so that in case of breakage, which usually occurs at the smaller or pointed end of the punch, only a comparatively small and inexpensive piece of the hardened tempered tool-steel will be lost, thus effecting a very great saving of expense.
My invention consists in the means I employ to accomplish this result that is to say, it consists, in connection with the punch-stock and threaded coupling or nut, of a hollow punch or punch-shell and a smaller solid punch fitting or nesting in the hollow punch or shell and a thrust-block fitting in the hollow punch or shell and interposed between the smaller solid punch and the thrust-block, so that the smaller solid punch will serve, in combination with the hollow punch or shell, as the lower or pointed end thereof in makinglarger holes of, the size of the shell and also serve as the small punch in making holes of the size of the solid punch.
My invention further consists in a plurality of hollow punches or shells fitting or nesting one within another in connection with a smaller solid punch fitting in the smaller punch or shell.
As the punch-shell or punch-shells which are used in my invention in forming the largersized holes are hollow, it will be readily understood that they can be readily hardened and tempered without danger of injury, and as in my invention any breakage of the punchpoint only effects the small solid punch, which is a comparatively small piece of tool-steel, it can be renewed at little expense, and the punch-shells, which are the larger and more expensive pieces, are seldom liable to fracture.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in vertical section, of a punch embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section through the compound punch. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective View of the small solid punch, and Fig. 5 shows a modification in which only one hollow punch or punchshell is employed.
In said drawings, A represents the die; X, the plate of steel or other metal to be punched; A, the stripper-plate; B, the threaded coupling or nut, and C the stock to which the punch is secured by the coupling or nut and by which it is reciprocated or operated.
D is a hollow punch or punch-shell used for making larger-sized holes. D is a second hollow punch or punch-shell fitting and nesting in the punch-shell D, and D is a smaller solid punch fitting and nesting in the smaller punch D.
F and F are thrust-blocks interposed between the smaller solid punch D and the thread-stock O, the thrust-block F fitting in the larger hollow punch or shell I) and abutting at its lower end against the hollow punch D and the thrust-block F, which abuts against the head (Z of the lower or solid punch D The head (Z of the solid punch D has a conical or exterior bevel-shoulder cZ fitting the corresponding interior bevel-shoulder d in the hollow punch or shell D, and the head or upper end (Z of the hollow punch D has a corresponding exterior bevel-shoulder d fitting the corresponding interior bevel-shoulder d on the hollow punch D. The head or upper end a? of the hollow punch D has an exterior bevel-shoulder cl, which fits the interior bevel-shoulder b of the coupling or nut B.
The length of the thrust-blocks F and F are such as to tighten the several nesting punches in each other and take up all slack or lost motion.
I do not herein claim the subject-matter shown in Fig. 5, as that forms the subject of my divisional application.
I claim 1. The combination with a punch-stock and threaded coupling or nut, of a plurality of hollow punches fitting and nesting one within another, a solid punch fitting and nesting in the smaller hollow punch, and thrust-blocks fitting in the hollow punches and interposed between the smaller solid punch and the stock, substantially as specified.
2. The compound punch herein shown and described and comprising in combination a punch-stock, coupling, and a plurality of hollow punches fitting and nesting together and each having an internal and an external shoulder, and a solid punch fitting in the smaller hollow punch and having an external shoulder or head engaging the internal shoulder of the smaller punch, and thrust-blocks fitting in the hollow punches and interposed between the solid punch and the punch-stock, substantially as specified.
3. The combination with a punch-stock C, threaded coupling B secured thereto and having an internal bevel-shoulder 6,0f punch-shell D having an external bevel-shoulder d engaging said internal bevel-shoulder Z) of the coupling, and provided with an internal bevelshoulder (Z smaller punch-shell D fitting and nesting within said punch-shell D and having an external bevel-shoulder and an internal bevel-shoulder, and solid punch D fitting and nesting within said punch-shell D and having an external bevel-shoulder, and thrust-blocks F and F fitting within said punch-shells and interposed between said solid punch and said punch-stock, substantially as specified.
