CARPET-STRETCHER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 769,994, dated September 18, 1904.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK FERERRO, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpet-Stretchers, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

My invention relates to carpet-stretchers; and it consists of the novel features herein shown, described, and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a carpet-stretcher constructed in accordance with the principles of my invention. Fig. '2 is a side elevation as seen looking in the direction indicated by the arrow 2 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section on a plane parallel with Fig. 2 on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1 and looking in the direction indicated by the arrow. Fig. 4: is a View analogous to Fig. 3 on the line l 4 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction indicated by the arrow and illustrating the operation.

Referring to the drawings in detail, the frame of the carpet-stretcher comprises.the side pieces 5 and 6 and the longitudinallyextending sill 7, connecting the forward ends of the side pieces rigidly together. The clamp-guideways 8 are formed in the side pieces 5 and 6 and extend horizontally from the rear ends of said side pieces. The forward clamp member 9 is mounted between the side pieces 5 and 6, parallel with the sill 7, and its ends are cut away, so that when the lower face of the clamp member is substantially on a level with the lower face of the side pieces the ends of the clamp member are slidingly mounted in the cltmp-guideways 8, and pin-holes 10 are formed at regular intervals in the rear face of the clamp member 9. The rear clamp member 11 is similar in construction to the forward clamp member, with its ends mounted in the clamp-guideways, and pins 12, fixed in the forward face of the rear clamp member, extend through the carpet 13 into the pin-holes 10, so as to connect the carpet to the clamp. A bracket 14 is rigidly secured to the center of the forward clamp member 9 and extends upwardly and in the guideways 8.

fixed upon the end of the roller 27 outside of backwardly, there being a slot 15 in the upper horizontal part of the clamp, and an adjustable plate 16 is secured to the bracket 14. by means of the thumb-screw 17, inserted through the plate and through the slot 15, so that the plate 16 may be moved forwardly or backwardly to the limits of the slot. An arm 18 extends downwardly from the plate 16 behind the clamp member 11, the lower end of said arm being bifurcated. The ears 19 extend backwardly upon each side of the bifurcation. An eccentric cam 20 is mounted in the bifurcation and pivotally connected to the ears 19, there being a handle 21' extending backwardly and upwardly for the operation of the cam. A metal plate 22 is secured to the rear face of the clamp member 11 to be engaged by the cam 20, so as to protect the clamp member. Guide- arms 23 and 21 extend horizontally from the lower ends of the arm 18, and guide- pins 25 and 26 are inserted through the ends of the guide-arms and screwseated in the clamp member 11, so as to hold the clamp member 11 in a plane parallel with the clamp member 9 and the sill 7 as it moves backwardly and forwardly in the ways 8. A roller 27 has its ends journaled in the upper forward parts of the side pieces 5 and 6, one

end of the roller extending through the side piece 5, and straps 28 are wound upon the roller and attached to the forward clamp member 9, so that when the roller is operated to wind up the straps the clamp is drawn forwardly A ratchet-wheel 29 is the side piece 5, and a gravity-pawl 30 is pivoted to the outer face of the side piece in position to engage the ratchet-wheel and resist the tension of the straps 28. A ratchet-tooth clutch member 31 extends outwardly from the.

ratchet-wheel 29, and a second ratchet-tooth clutchmember 32 is loosely mounted upon the outer end of the roller 27, so that the teeth of the second member interlock with the teeth of the first member. An expansive coil-spring 33 is mounted upon the outer end of the roller outside of theclutch member 32, and a spring-cotter 34 is inserted through the roller and forms a spring-seat to force the spring 33 against the clutch member 32. An

operating-handle 35 extends from the clutch member 32. Bearing- blocks 36 and 37 are attached to the outer face of the side pieces a and 6, and nails 38 and 39 are mounted in said bearing-blocks, said nails being inclined, so that the points may be driven into the floor as required to resist the tension of the carpet.

The edge of the carpet 18 is doubled upon itself to any desired extent and inserted upwardly between the clamp members 9 and 11. Then the cam 20 is operated to force the pins 12 through the carpet into the pin-holes 10, thereby securely connecting the carpet to the carpet-stretcher. Then the carpet-stretcher is moved as far as the carpet will permit, and the nails 38 and 39 are driven into the fioor. Th en the handle is operated back and forth to unwind the straps 28 upon the roller 27, thereby pulling the clamp backwardly in the ways 8 and stretching the carpet. If desired, the carpet may be temporarily tacked, the straps 28 unwound, the frame moved backwardly, and the operation repeated until the carpet is stretched to the desired extent. Then the carpet may be temporarily tacked, the carpet-stretcher removed, and the folded edge of the carpet straightened out to cover the space which had previously been occupied by that part of the carpet-stretcher in front of the clamp. By the use of the ratchetclutch for operating the winding-roller the carpet may be pulled to within two or three inches of the Wall, and the edge of the carpet which has been doubled upon itself between the clamp member will straighten out and cover this space.

I claim 1. In a carpet-stretcher: two side pieces having clamp-guideways; a roller mounted in the side pieces; a carpet-clamp mounted in the guideways; a connection between the roller and the clamp; and means of operating the roller; substantially as specified.

2. In a carpet-stretcher: two side pieces having clamp-guideways; a roller mounted in the side pieces; a carpet-clamp mounted in the guideways; a connection between the roller and the clamp; means of operating the roller; bearing-blocks attached to the side pieces; and nails mounted in the bearing-blocks to engage the floor and resist the tension of the carpet; substantially as specified.

8. Inacarpet-stretcher: suitable sidepieces having clamp guideways; clamp members mounted in the guideways; a cam for forcing the members together; a roller mounted in the side pieces; a connection between the roller and the clamp; and a ratchet mechanism for operating the roller; substantially as specified.

4. Inacarpet-stretcher: suitable side pieces having clamp-guideways; a forward clamp member mounted in the guideways; a rear clamp member mounted in the guideways; a clamping-cam; a frame connecting the clamping-cam to the forward clamp member, so that it will engage the rear clamp member and force the clamp members together; and means of operating the cam; substantially as specified.
