NON-COLLAPSIBLE PAINT TUBE OR RECEPTACLE. V
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 769,928, dated September 13, 1904:.
Application filed January 23, 1903. Renewed July 23, 1904. Serial No. 217,813. (No model.)
To all whom, it 1nay concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR W. ZIEGLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berlin, county of Green Lake, and State of WViscousin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Non-Collapsible Paint Tubes or Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in receptacles for paints, oils, dentifrices, and
' explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a side view of the package, part in section. Fig. 2 represents a transverse section of the preferred form. Fig. 3 represents a modified form of the device shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 represents a rear view of a. piston by which the contents of a package are forced from the receptacle. Fig. 5 represents a modified form of the device for closing the open end of the tubular receptacle in rear of the piston, and Fig. 6 represents a modified form of piston and cover.
Like parts are identified by the same reference-letters throughout the several views.
A represents a tubular receptacle having rigid non-flexible walls. The receptacle A is open at B, and its opposite end is closed with a cover or end piece O and provided with a screw-threaded discharge-nozzle E, which nozzle E is provided with an inclosing screwthreaded cap F. The receptacle A is provided with a narrow longitudinal slot G, extending from one end to or near the other for the reception of the operating bearing or projection H and cutting-blade 1, which parts are formed integrally with the bracket J and piston K. To provide for retaining the contents of a package in the receptacle and for preventing it from escaping through the longitudinal slot G, the said slot is closed either by a narrow strip of thin material L or an inclosing envelop M. When said slot G is closed by a narrow strip, as shown in Fig. 2, the same is secured to the surface of the tube A by any suitable adhesive substance. When, however, the envelop M is used, it is drawn over and incloses the entire exterior surface of the tube, as is shown in Fig. 3, in which latter case it is of course unnecessary to use an adhesive substance to secure said envelop in place.
\Vhile I preferably employ tin-foil, sheetlead, or other similar sheet metal for closing the slot G, said slot may, if desired, be closed with paper or other thin non-metallic material which is readily severed by the pressure of the knife I against it. In using my receptacle it will be understood that the open end B of the cylinder is closed by the piston K, and the slot G is closed by one of the means described when the receptacle is filled in the ordinary manner. When desirous to discharge a portion of the contents from the receptacle, the cap F is removed from the discharge end, when the piston K is forced forward against the contents by applying a forward and downward pressure upon the projection H of the bracket J, whereby the strip of metal L or envelop M,which covers the slot G, is severed by the blade I as the piston is moved forward and the contents of the receptacle are forced from the discharge-opening of the same. The front surface of the piston K is preferably provided with a non-metallic packing N, which bears against the inner wall of the receptacle and serves to form a tight jointbetween the same and the periphery of the piston. When the piston K and bracket J are in place, the open end of the receptacle may be closed by a cap O. When, however, the receptacle is inclosed with a flexible envelop M, as indicated in Figs. 3 and 5, the cap 0 may be dispensed with, and the overlapping ends of the envelop may, if desired, be folded over and around the walls of the receptacle and forced into the same in rear of the piston.
It will be understood that by providing the piston K with the brackets J and the protruding bearing-surface H the lower edge of said piston will be retained in its proper relative position to its inclosure as it is being forced forward by the downward and forward pressure of the thumb of the user upon the protruding end of said bracket.
It will be understood that in the modified form of construction shown in Fig. 6 the stopper K serves the twofold purpose of a cover for closing the filling end of the receptacle and as a piston for forcing its contents therefrom; also, that when the stopper K is used the piston K-(shown in Fig. 1) may be dispensed with, and a stopper K may be pushed forward with the handleof a brush or other similar instrument of the required dimensions, in which case the longitudinal slot G and the means employed for closing the same shown and described may be dispensed with.
The stopper K is formed like an ordinary box-cover, having cylindrical walls closed at one end, and the closed end is inserted first in the receptacle, as indicated in Fig. 5, whereby as the same is forced foward toward the nozzle of the receptacle it serves the purpose of a piston, as previously stated.
Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A receptacle for paints and other similar liquid or powdered substances comprising a cylindrical piece of non-collapsible metallic tubing provided on one side with a longitudinal slot; a cover or end piece inclosing oneend thereof; a discharge-nozzle centrally located in said cover or end piece; a screwthreaded cap inclosing the outer end of said nozzle; a piston located in the opposite end of said receptacle from said nozzle; means for communicating a forward movement to said piston from the exterior of the cylinder through said slot, substantially as set forth.
2. A receptacle for paints, and other semiliquid or powdered substances, comprising a cylindrical piece of non-flexible metallic tubing provided on one side with a longitudinal slot; a cover or end piece inclosing one end thereof; a nozzle centrally located in said cover or end piece; a screw-threaded cap inclosing the outer end of said nozzle; a piston located in the opposite end of said receptacle from said nozzle; means for closing said longitudinal slot; means for communicating a forward movement to said plston from the exterior of said cylinder; and means for open-' ing said longitudinal slot as said piston is moved forward, substantially as set forth.
3. A receptacle for paints, and other semiliquid or powdered substances, comprising a cylindrical piece of non-flexible metallic tubing provided on one side with a longitudinal slot; a cover or end piece inclosing one end thereof; a nozzle centrally located in said cover or end piece; a screw-threaded cap inclosing the outer end of said nozzle; a piston located in the opposite end of said receptacle from said nozzle; means for closing said longitudinal slot; means for communicating a forward movement to said piston from the exterior of saidcylinder; means for opening said longitudinal slot as said piston is moved forward, and means for closing the open end of said cylinder in rear of said piston.
4:. A receptacle for paints, and other semiliquid substances comprising a slotted cylinder, provided at one end with a cover or end piece having a central aperture; means for closing the central aperture in said cover or end piece; means for closing said longitudinal slot; a piston located in the end of said receptacle, opposite said cover or end piece;-
means for communicating a forward movement to said piston comprising a bracket J, formed integrally therewith, and a cuttingblade I, formed integrally with said bracket, and means for closing the end of said cylinder in rear of said piston and bracket, substantially as set forth.
5. A receptacle for paints, and other semiliquid substances comprising a slotted cylinder, provided at one end with a cover or end piece having a central aperture; means-for closing the central aperture in said cover or end piece; a narrow strip of thin material secured to the surface of said'cylinder above said longitudinal slot; a piston located in the end of said receptacle, opposite said cover or end piece; means for communicating a forward movement to said piston comprising a bracket J, formed integrally therewith, and a cutting-blade 1, formed integrally with said bracket, and means for closing the end of said cylinder in rear of said piston and bracket, substantially as set forth. v
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
