Abstract
The dispensing container has at one end a removable wall (6) onto which an outlet nozzle (10) can be placed. The removable wall (6) is formed by an end wall, of the outer surface (1), which forms virtually the entire container bottom and on whose edge a wall zone (4) of smaller wall thickness is provided which allows the removable wall (6) to be torn off the outer surface (1) of the container. The wall zone (4) of smaller wall thickness is arranged in the cylindrical region of an annular shoulder (2) located between the end wall (6) and the outer surface (1) of the container. As a result, the outer surface of the container and the end wall forming the container bottom with the wall zone of smaller wall thickness can be produced integrally by extrusion in one operation. The dispensing container is intended, in particular, for receiving viscous substances. <IMAGE>
Description
(54) DISPENSING CONTAINERS FOR VISCOUS COMPOSITIONS
(71) We, ALCAN ALUMINIUMWERKE
GmbH, a Body Corporate organized under the laws of the Federal Republic of Germany, of Hannoversche Strasse 2, D 3400 Göttingen, Federal Republic of Germany, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement :
The invention relates to dispensing containers for viscous compositions, particularly pastes, such as glue, elastic sealing compositions and thick liquid-granular compositions.
Dispensing containers of this type are already known comprising a generally cylindrical casing with an outlet aperture at one end and a plunger slidably disposed in the container for dispensing the contents through the outlet aperture. As a rule, they are extruded from light metal and have in said one end wall a centrally disposed outlet connection which is in most cases closed by a membrane moulded in one piece with the end wall and adapted to be pierced when the contents need to be used. After the membrane has been pierced, the viscous composition present in the container can be forced out of the container through the outlet connection by mechanical or pneumatic operation of the plunger. For more accurate placing of the dispensed composition, it is possible with these known dispensing containers to screw onto the outlet connection an outlet nozzle through which the viscous composition can then be pressed out of the container.
The known dispensing containers of this type are suitable in the main for compositions of lower viscosity, but not for highly viscous liquid compositions and granular pasty sealing and filling compositions.
According to this invention there is provided a dispensing container for viscous compositions, comprising a substantially cylindrical casing at one axial end of which is a wall substantially the whole of which is removable to form an outlet orifice extending over substantially the whole of the end of the cylindrical casing, the removable portion of the wall having extending along its edge a zone of reduced wall thickness which allows said wall portion to be torn away, and an outlet nozzle member adapted to be fitted to the container about the outlet orifice, the nozzle member and the casing having interengageable means for retaining the member in position on the casing.
The zone of reduced wall thickness may be located in a cylindrical part of an annular shoulder at the said one end of the container casing or may be disposed adjacent or within an annular eorrugation formed in the end wall of the container. The discharge nozzle, which may be fitted directly onto the container casing can be attached to the container casing by a snap-action device.
This snap-action device may comprise circumferentially extending projections formed on a body part of the nozzle and the casing respectively, the projection on said body engaging behind the projection on the casing. In this respect, the projection may be formed on a body part of the nozzle and may be constituted by one side of an annular groove or by a bead disposed on said body part of the outlet nozzle.
By way of further explanation of the invention, two particularly advantageous embodiments are described in greater detail hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows the casing of a first embodiment of container in axial section,
Figure 2 shows on an enlarged scale a section through a part of the end of the casing shown in Figure 1 on which it is intended to fit an outlet nozzle,
Figure 3 shows likewise in cross-section an outlet nozzle for fitting on the container casing shown in Figures 1 and 2,
Figure 4 is a cross-section through the plunger for the container casing shown in
Figure 1,
Figure 5 is a cross-section view of the rear end cover of the container casing shown in
Figure 1,
Figure 6 shows in cross-section and on an enlarged scale and partly broken away the attachment of the rear end cover to the con tainer casing shown in-Figure 1, Figure 7 shows in cross-section the container casing of a further embodiment of dispensing container according to the invention,
Figures 8, 9 and 10 show container front end cover, rear end cover and the outlet nozzle respectively of this further embodiment, all in cross-section, and
Figure 11 shows in cross-section, with part broken away, the assembly of the casing, front end cover and outlet nozzle of the further embodiment.
In the case ofthe embodiment shown in
Figures 1 to 6, container casing 1 and container front end cover 6 are formed in one piece from one extruded part, preferably of aluminium. At its rear end 8 the container casing 1 is bent outwardly to form a flange 9 so that it can easily be connected by a seam 15 (Figure 6) to the flanged rear end cover 14 shown in Figure 5.
The front end cover 6 is pressed out with the largest possible diameter to produce at the edge of the container end an annular shoulder 2. The cylindrical wall part 4 of this annular shoulder 2 has a smaller wall thickness than the walls of the container casing 1 and front end cover 6, so that it is possible in the region of this cylindrical zone of reduced wall thickness, to separate the end 6 from the container casing 1 by means of a knife 5.
After the container shown in Figure 1 has been filled with the viscous composition which is to be kept within it, the plunger 13 shown in Figure 4 is pushed into the container. Its open end 8 can now be sealed by means of the flanged rear end cover 14 shown in Figure 5. In the vicinity of its flanged edge, the cover 14 has an annular corrugation 16 directed axially outwardly from the container and an annular notch 17 which serves as a predetermined breaking point for opening the container in order to operate the dispensing plunger 13.
In order to use the dispensing container, after the container has been opened in using annular notch 17, the front end cover 6 is separated from the container casing 1 at the zone 4 of reduced thickness by means of a knife 5 or the like, the portion 11 of the outlet nozzle 10 can be fitted onto the container casing 1.
In order to attach the outlet nozzle 10 to the container casing 1 there is on the portion 11 of the nozzle a radially inwardly directed encircling annular rib 12 which engages in an annular groove 7 below the shoulder 2 of the container 1. For this purpose, it is advantageous for the outlet nozzle 10 to be made from an elastomeric synthetic plastics material.
In the case of the example of embodiment shown in Figures 7 to 11, the cylindrical container comprises a tubular casing 18, the walls of which are bent outwardly at opposite ends 19 and 20 of the casing to form respective flanges 21.
After the container has been filled with the viscous composition which is to be kept in it and after insertion of the plunger which is not shown in Figures 7 to 11 but which may be similar to that shown in Figure 4, the tubular casing 18 is sealed at its end 19 by a flanged end cover 22 and at the other end 20 by a flanged end cover 23, both of which are seamed to the container casing as shown at 26 in Figure 11. Both of the covers 22, 23 have in th vicinity of their outer edge, an annular axially outwardly directed corrugation 24 of at least partially diminished wall thickness, so that a tear-open line results and the portion of the end cover bounded by this corrugation can be removed from the container.
After the end cover 23 has been opened, the container end cover 22 is opened and the outlet nozzle 25 is then pushed onto the seamed edge 26 as shown in Figure 11. When this is done, the rib 27 on the body 28 of the outlet nozzle engages behind the edge 26 to secure the nozzle on the container casing.
By fitting the outlet nozzle on the container casing and providing a large outlet orifice, it is in both embodiments ensured that highly viscous compositions which may for example partially harden even while they are being dispensed, can without difficulty be dispensed from the container and accurately placed.
The dispensing containers shown have only few components, namely a container casing, a container rear end cover, a dispensing plunger and an outlet nozzle and possibly a separate front end cover for the container, so that it is simple and inexpensive to manufacture. Of these parts, expediently the container casing, the front and rear container end covers are made from light metal, preferably aluminium, while the outlet nozzle and plunger are preferably made from synthetic plastics material.
