JOHN GIBSON, OF NOROTON HEIGHTS, CONNECTICUT.
SPECIFIGATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 769,898, dated Eteptember 18, 1994:.
Application filed March 19, 190%.
To (11M wit/mt it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN GIBSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Noroton Heights, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in DischargesGhutes for Coal Carts or iVagons, of which the follow ing is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 7
This invention relates to coal carts and Wagons; and the object thereof is to provide'improved means for discharging the coal from vehicles of this class; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts herein described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which-- Figure l is a rear end view of a coal cart or Wagon provided with my improvement and showing the method of its operation; Fig. 2,
asimilar view, partly in section and on an enlarged scale; Fig. 3, a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 a plan view of a detail of the construction.
1n the drawings forming part of this speci-' Secured to the bottom portion of the bed or body a, at the rearend thereof, is a transverse hanger 5, composed of ordinary T-iron in the'form of construction shown, and resting on the hanger Z) and running longitudinally of the cart or wagon body and beneath the same and parallel therewith is a supplemental-support b consisting of an I-beam or similar device, and mounted on the supplmental support 6 and movable longitudinally thereof is a 'slide 0, provided with an upwardly-directed pivotpin 0 on which is placed Serial No. 198,888. (No model.)
a cup-shaped support (Z, the bottom of which raised or conical in form, as shown at J, and provided with a central opening (Z through which the pivot-pin 0 passes, and passed through the top of said pivot-pin above the bottom of the cup-shaped support 63 is a of the body a? of the cart or wagon is a stationary shield g, composed of metal and covcred so as to inclose the usual opening h, formed in the rear end of the body portion of the cart or wagon or in the tail-gate, and
this opening is closed by a vertically-movable slide-door 1 1. in the usual manner, said door being operated by a lever if, pivoted to the end of the body of the cart or wagon, as shown at if, and connected with the door 7& by a link 72.. The shield gis intended to prevent the coal from scattering as it falls from the body of the cart or wagon in the usual manner and drops into the chute f.
In the form of construction shown the telescopic chute e is composed of two parts, and the support (1 thereof is adapted to slide freely on the beam 6, and the part c of said chute is adapted to be extended when the parts are i in the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3 trans versely of the pavement, so as to dischar -re the coal into a coal-hole 2'.
In Fig. l I have shown at j a portion of a street and at j a part of a pavement adjacent thereto, and'the coal-hole i is in said pavement, and in practice the cart or wagon is drawn up adjacent to the pavement or sidewalk, as shown in Fig. 1, and the chute in the keepers e is extended, as shown in said figure. 7 The door 71 is then raised, and. thecoal is discharged through the opening 1/ into the telescopic chute e and slides thereihgfilo parts of she chute.
