Description

N0. 1 69,736- PATENTED SEPT. 13, 1904. J. P. GALLAGHER.
CARPET STRETGHER;
APPLICATION FILED JAN.14,1904.
N0 MODEL.
UNITED STATES Patented September 13, 1904.
JOHN P. GALLAGHER, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
CARPET-STRETCHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 769,736, dated September 13, 1904.
Application filed January 14, 1904. Serial No. 188,980. (No model.)
To [0M 10/1/0772 it 772/661] concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN P. GALLAGHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Carpet-Stretchers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to carpet-stretchers; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction thereof, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein A marks a carpet.
The carpet-stretcher comprises the fulcrumbar B, which has the attaching means 7), as shown, in the form of a pointed pin, which may be driven into the floor. The rear end of the fulcrum-bar B is provided with a fulcrum-shoulder 7/. As shown, this fulcrumshoulder is in the form of a pin; but any shape that will form a support for the toggle-lever C will suifice. The toggle-lever C has the two parts 0 and c. It also has the carpet-engaging means 0, which, as shown, is a series of spurs which fasten the carpet. The opposite end has the notch 0 which engages the lug 7).
In operation the fulcrum-bar B is secured to the floor by means of the pin 71. The toggle-lever C is drawn up, the part a abutting the shoulder 7/ and part C engaging with the carpet. As the toggle-lever is forced down the carpet is forced to its place. WVhen the toggle-lever reaches its lower position, it is near enough to a straight line to remain locked in this position through its own Weight.
I prefer to provide the side bar D, which extends from the fulcrum-lever B and forms a means of attachment with the floor by which the swaying of the fulcrum-bar is prevented. By this means the fulcrum-bar may be swung on the pin 7), so that with but one attachment of the pin 7) quite a length of carpet may be stretched. The side bar I) has the plated, in which is a perforation (I, through which extends the pin 5 from the fulcrum-lever B. The attaching means comprises the pin (Z It will be noted in this construction the fulcrum-bar B and the toggle-lever extend in the same general direction from the fulcrum shoulder I), so that the fulcrum-bar may be secured along the edge of the carpet which is being operated upon. It will also be observed that the shoulder Z), acting with the notch 0 permits the toggle-lever to swing on an axis substantially parallel to the axis in the joint of the toggle-lever, so that the toggle-lever may be operated without disturbing the fulcrum-bar.
IVhat I claim as new is 1. In a carpet-stretcher the combination with the fulcrum-bar having a means of attachment to the floor and a fulcrumshoulder thereon; of a toggle-lever having a carpet-engaging means thereon and arranged to engage the fulcrum-shoulder and swing thereon with an axis substantially parallel to the axis in the joint in the toggle-lever, the toggle-lever and fulcrum-bar extending in the same general direction from the fulcrum-shoulder.
2. In a carpet-stretcher the combination with the fulcrum-bar having a means of attachment to the floor; of a fulcrum-shoulder thereon; atoggle-leverhaving acarpet-engaging means thereon, and arranged to engage the fulcrum-shoulder and swing thereon with an axis substantially parallel to the axis in the joint in the togglelever, the toggle-lever and fulcrum-bar extending in the same general direction from the fulcrum-shoulder, and means for holding the fulcrum-bar from side movement.
3. In a carpet-stretcher the combination with the fulcrum-bar having a means of attachment to the floor and a fulcrum-shoulder thereon; of a toggle-lever having a carpet-engaging means thereon and arranged to engage the fulcrum-shoulder and swing thereon with an axis substantially parallel to the axis in the joint in the toggle-lever, the toggle-lever and fulcrum-bar extending in the same general direction from the fulcrum-shoulder, and a side bar extending from the fulcrum-bar and having means thereon for attaching it to the carpet or floor.
4:. In a carpet-stretcher the combination of the fulcrum-bar B having the pin 6, shoulder In testimony whereof I have hereunto set Z) and pin 6 thereon; the toggle-lever Chavmy hand in the presence of two subscribing ing the carpet-engaging means 0 thereon, and Witnesses.
the notch c for engaging the shoulder b; and JOHN P. GALLAGHER. 5 the side bar D having the perforation (Z for Witnesses:
engaging the pin 6 and the pointed pin (Z for H. C. LORD,
engaging the carpet or floor. M. (J. SULLIVAN.
