Gr. H. ALGER, OF AMES, NEW YORK.
Lemie Patent No. 76,967, kann .ma 21, 186s,
IMPROVEMENT lIN LIITING-JAGK.
To ALL wHoM 1T MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, G. H. ALGER, of 1l-nies, in the county of Montgomery, and State of New York, have invented a. new and improved Lifting-Jack; und I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable those skilled in the art` to make and use'the same, reference being had to 'the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.'
' This'invention is an improvementon the lifting-jacks, as'heretofore inode', and is designed more partici. larly for lifting threshing-machines when the rear'wheels of the saine are to be Withdrawn, to lower' the rear ct' the machine to the ground for the operation of threshing.
The drawing is a sectional view of the jack, which is composed of a ratchetlrack, B, sliding vertically between uprights', @which latter rise from a base-block, D. I
The ratohetrackis of metal, and is affixed to a stout rodor strip, I-I, which latter is provided with tongues,
f, tting in the grooves e of the uprights, as shown.
A lifting-toe, E, is bolted to the lower end of th'e rod I-I, and thus serves to catch `under the axle of the .threshing-machine, to raise it from the'ground, in order to vreplace'the wheels.
` The uprights are'c'onnected at the top by cross-pieces, GG, bolted lor affixed to the.uprights in anysuit- 'able manner.
To one of these cross-pieces, thelever A is hung, by ineens of a hinged link, g, ns shown.
` A crank-lever, .5, havinganlarrn, oZ, serves to catch under any one tooth of .the rack, and hold thcsatnect The red outline ol shows'th'e position of this arm when not in use.
The operation of this jack'is obvious. l i
Its peculiarity of construotiouccus'ists in thearrangemcnt of the lifting-toe E,la.t the b gttom of the upright, so that it can catch under the axle when the same is on' the ground, or lower the axle to the ground.
The screw-jacks heretofore merle will vnot answer for vthis purpose, as will be obvious.
With my improved lifting-jack,'a thresliihg-xnacli`ine may be raised or lowered ina short time, and with less help than is required to perform the same operation without this invention.
One mau can vraise or lower athreshing-machine by this means, when, without it, several men are 1cquired 'with the `aid of levers, poles, andthe like, to effect the suine obj-ect.
'It is simple and effective, as I have proven in practice with a full-sized machine.
I claim :1s new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the uprights C, rack B, base D, cross-pieces G Gr,lever A, link g c, lever-catch b, and lifting-toe E, all constructed and operating together substantially as and for the purposeshown and described.
The above specification of my'invention signed by me, this 27th ddy of February, 1868.
