SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 769,653, dated September 6, 1904.

To (1, whom, it n'my concern.-
Be it known that 1, Lotus A. Jones, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Imand arrangement of parts set forth in the fol- 1 lowing specification and particularly pointed out in the claims thereof.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a i plan view of a binder-frame constructed in accordance with my invention, together with a portion of two cover-sections, the same being shown open. Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 1, certain parts beyond the plane of section being omitted. Fig. 51 is an end elevation. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section taken on line 5 5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is perspective view of one of the end guide-plates.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In the drawings, 5 is a back plate.
6 and T are cover-plates. to which the covers 8 and 9, respectively, are fastened. The cover-plates 6 and T extend throughout the entire length of the back plate 5 and are provided with end flanges 1O 10 and 11 11, respectively. Said end flanges 10 10 and 11 11 extend laterally over said back plate 5. Said cover-plates are preferably L-shaped in crosstion and are constructed to slide laterally upon said back plate 5, being guided in ways provided by plates 12 12, fast to the inside and at opposite ends of the back plate The guide-plates 12 12 are fastened to the back plate 5 and are provided with flanges 36 36, 1 which extend vertically upward from the guide-plates 12 12 adjacent to the inner faces of the end flanges 1O 10 and 11 11, thus pre- 5 l venting longitudinal movement of the cover- 5 plates 6 and 7 and also serving to close the space between the adjacent ends of the end l flanges 1O 10 and 11 11, respectively.
The cover- plates 6 and 7 are moved simull taneously toward or away from each other by 3 links 13 13 and 14: 14.. The links 13 13 are l pivotally connected at their outer ends to the cover-plate 6, and the links 14 1 1 at their l outer ends are pivotally connected to the coverplate 7. One pair of links 13 1a is pivotally connected at 15 to a slide 16, said slide being constructed to slide in ways 17 18, integral with the back plate 5. The inner ends of the 4 other pair of links 13 11 are pivoted at 19 5 to a slide 20, guided in ways 21 22, integral with the back plate 5.
The slides 16 and 20 have rack- teeth 23 and 21, respectively, cut therein and meshing into a pinion 25, journaled to rotate upon a stud 7 26. fast to a bracket 37, which in turn is fastened to the back plate 5. The bracket 37 is provided with arms 37 and 37, which serve to guide the rack- slides 16 and 20, respectively, and keep the rack- teeth 23 and 24, respcctively, in mesh with the pinion 25. The slide 16 is screw-threaded to receive a screwthreaded rod 28, journaled to rotate in a bearing 29, provided in a forked flange 30, extending downwardly at right angles from the 30 guide-plate 12. The rod 28 is guarded against longitudinal movement by flanges 31 31, integral therewith and bearing against opposite sides of the forked flange 30. Said rod is provided with a square end 32, which fits a 5 key 33, by means of which the rod 28 is rotated. Upon rotating the rod 28, as the same cannot move longitudinally on account of being held by the flange 30, the rack-slide 16 is 1 moved longitudinally, and the teeth 23 thereof l cause the pinion 25 to rotate, and through the pinion 25 the rack-slide 20 is moved longitui dinally thereof. It will be seen, therefore, i that as the rod 28 is rotated the rack- slides 16 and 20 are moved simultaneously in opposite directions longitudinally thereof. As the said l slides 16 and 20 are moved, as hereinbefore l described, longitudially of the back-plate 5 simultaneously in opposite directions,the links 13 and 14 and 13 14: will move the cover- plates 6 and 7 toward or away from each other.
The cover- plates 6 and 7 are provided with posts 34 34:, fast thereto and projecting into tubes 35 35, and to these tubes and posts the leaves of the ledger (not shown) are attached. Asthe cover-plates6and 7 aremoved toward or away from each other, as hereinbefore described, the posts 34 34 slide in the tubes 35 35. It will thus be seen that by rotating the rod 28 by means of the key 33 the distance between the two cover- plates 6 and 7 and between the covers 8 and 9 will be increased or diminished, as may be desired, to accommodate and holdflrmly bound together varying numbers of leaves. It will also be seen that when the cover-plates have been adjusted to the desired distance one from the other in the manner hereinbefore set forth said cover-plates will be locked against displacement by the rotary screw-threaded rod 28, which holds the racks l6 and and the pinion stationary except when a rotary movement is imparted to said rod, as hereinbefore described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire by Letters Patent to secure, is
l. A binder-frame comprising a back plate, cover plates constructed to slide laterally thereon, two racks constructed to slide longitudinally of said back plate. links pivotally connected at opposite ends thereof, respectively, to said cover-plates and to said racks, a pinion meshing at opposite sides thereof into said racks, and a rotatable rod extending longitudinally of said back plate and having screw-threaded engagement with one of said rack slides, end flanges integral with said cover-plates at opposite ends thereof, respectively, the end flanges on each of said coverplates constructed to extend laterally over i said back plate, and a guide-plate fast-to said back plate and having flanges projecting therefrom in opposite directions, respectively, and at right angles to said back plate, one of said flanges constituting a guide for two end flanges and serving to close the space between their adjacent ends, the other of said flanges engaging said screw-threaded rod.
2. A binder-frame comprising a back plate, cover plates constructed to slide laterally thereon, two racks constructed to slide longitudinally of said back plate, links pivotally connected at opposite ends thereof, respectively, to said cover-plates and to said racks,
a pinion meshing at opposite sides thereof into said racks, and a rotatable rod extending longitudinally of said back plate and having screw-threaded engagement with one of said rack slides, end flanges integral with said cover-plates at opposite ends thereof, respectively, two racks constructed to slide longi-' tudinally of said back plate, links pivotally connected at opposite ends thereof, respectively, to said cover-plates and to said racks, a pinion meshing at opposite sides thereof into said racks, the end flanges of each of said coverplates constructed to extend laterally over said back plate, and a guide-plate fast to said back plate and having flanges projecting therefrom in opposite directions, respectively, and at right angles to said back plate, one of said flanges constituting a guide for two end flanges and serving to close the space between their adjacent ends, the other of said flanges engaging said screw-threaded rod.
