PATENT OEETcE.
DAVID D. GETMAN, OF BROVN VALLEY, MINNESOTA.
WAGON-JACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 769,476, dated September 6, 1904.
Application filed February 12,1904. erial No. 193,263. No model.)
To all whom may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAVID D. GETMAX. of Brown Valley, Traverse county, Minnesota, have invented a certain new and Improved lVagon-Jack, of which the following is a specitication.
The object of my invention is to provide a device by means of which the wagon or carriage wheel can be raised from the ground and the axle-nut easily and quickly removed for the purpose of oiling the axle.
A further object is to provide a device adapted for use with a heavy or a light vehicle.
A further object is to provide a combined jack and wrench that is compact, of simple and inexpensive construction, and very durable.
The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described, and particularlypointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of a combined jack and wrench embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the device in use, the position of the jack when the wheel is raised being indicated by dotted lines. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail sectional views of the wrench device. Fig. is a side view of the jack. Fig. 6 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 7 is a transverse section on the line :2 :r of Fig. 6. Fig. 8 is a section on the line 1 9 of Fig. 6.
In the drawings, 2 represents a suitable base having asocket 3, wherein the lower end of a hollow standard 4 is mounted on a pivoted pin 5. The hole 6 for said pin is sufficiently large to allow a limited lateral movement of the standard on its pivot. The up per end of the standard is provided with a bearing 7, substantially square in cross-section, wherein arod or shank 8, also square in cross-section and fitting within the hollow standard, is vertically slidable. This rod is provided on one side with a series of ratchetteeth 9, that are engaged by a pawl 10. normally held in engagement with said teeth by a spring 11. I prefer to provide a lug 12 on said pawl adapted to enter a hole 13 on the rod 8 and lock the said rod within the standard and prevent its accidental disengagement therefrom. The device can then be hung up when not in use without danger of the parts becoming separated.
Upon the upper end of the rod 8 I pivot a block M, provided on one side with a lip or flange 15, having a concave outer edge 16, whereon a wheel-hub rests when it is raised from the ground.
A socket 17 is provided on the block 14 to receive the iixed jaw 18 of a wrench 19. This wrench is preferably provided with a long handle or shank, so that the person using the device can obtain a long leverage on the wheel, and near the fixed jaw the shank is provided with a corrugated or roughened surface 20 to cooperate with a similar surface on the movable jaw 21. The corrugated surface on the jaw 21 is preferably made convex or crowning, as indicated in Figs. 3 and 4t, and a camlevcr 22 is mounted on said jaw and adapted to engage the under side of the shank and draw the convex surface of the said jaw against the corresponding surface of the shank and prevent the jaw from slipping. In Figs. 3 and 41 have shown the wrench in position on the axle-nut with the cam-lever in its unlocked position and also in its locked position, and when so locked it is merely necessary for the operator to hold the cam-lever with one hand and whirl the wrench-shank forward or back to tighten or loosen the nut. A stop 23 is preferably provided in the wrench-shank to limit the movement of the jav 21 thereon.
In Figs. 2 and 8 1 have shown a device for supporting a grease-box on the standard 4, comprising a ring or band 24, provided on one side with a lockingscrew 2.5 and on the other with a depending linger 26, between which and the wall of the standard the edge of the grease-box is slipped and clamped by the tightening of the lockingscrew. In Fig. 6 l have shown a similar locking means for an oil-can 28. that is provided with a band 29,
adapted to be slipped in between the standard 9 and the linger 26. This band merely holds the can in place, the bottom resting on the base 2.
The operation of my wagon jack and wrench is as follows: The device having been placed near a wheel, the operator will raise the rod 8 until the lip 15 contacts with the under side of the wheel-hub, where it will be locked by the pawl 10. He will then slip the fixed jaw of the wrench into the socket 17 and'tu'rnthe blockon its pivot to the position shown in Fig. 6 and raise the wheel from the ground. The Wrench is then removed from the socket, adjusted to fit the axle-nut, and the nut easily and quickly removed. Then the standard 4: is swung outward on its pivot, slipping the Wheel partially off the axle until its rim strikes the base of the jack and prevents further movement. The exposed axle can then be oiled or greased and the operation above described reversed.
I do not in this application wish to confine myself to any particular size of the wrench and jack or to the material employed in their construction, the essential features being the pivoted block to engage the Wheel-hub, the pivotally-supported standard therefor, and the Wrench employed for tilting theblock and removing the axle-nut. The Wrench will clamp the axle-nut firmly and prevent it from dropping down in the dirt after being removed from the axle and will hold itisecurely, ready to be placed in position again as soon as the oiling operation is completed.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination, with a suitable base, of a vertically-movable support pivoted thereon, a block pivoted on said support and having a part to engage the wheel-hub, and means for tilting said block to raise the wheel from the ground.
2. The combination, with a base, of a rod pivotally supported thereon and vertically movable with respect thereto, a block pivoted on said rod and having a lip or flange prolow standard pivoted thereon, a rod vertically movable in said standard and having a series of ratchet-teeth, a pawl carried by said standard and engaging said teeth, a block' pivoted on said rod and having a lip or flange on one "side provided with a concave edge, for the purpose specified.
4. The combination, with a suitable base, of a rod pivoted thereon and vertically movable with respect thereto, a tilting block carried by said rod and adapted to engage the wheelhub, said block having a socket on one side, and a tilting device adapted to enter said socket.
5. The combination, with a suitable base, of a support vertically movable thereon, a block pivoted on said support and having a laterallyextending lip or flange provided with a concave outer edge, and a socket wherein a tool may be inserted to tilt said block, for the purpose specified.
6. In a wagon-jack, a standard, in combination with a block pivoted thereon, said block having a horizontally-extending flange adapted to engage the under side of the wheel-hub, the outer end of said flange being concave to form a seat for the hub when the block is tilted, and means for tilting said block.
7 In a wagon-jack, the combination, witha standard 4, of a band clamped thereon and provided with a depending finger, for the purpose specified.
8. A wagon-jack comprising a base, a standard pivoted thereon and adapted to swing toward and from the wheel in line with the axle, and a pivoted hub-engaging member supported by said standard and having a surface to engage the under side of a wheel-hub before it is raised and a concave surface to receive said hub when it is raised.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 5th day of February, 1904.
DAVID D. GETMAN.
