NELSON HURD FULTS, OF ADA, OHIO.
AUTOMATIC 'ROPE-CLAMPER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 769,475, da p mb r 6, 1904.
Application filed November 14,1903. Serial No. 181,159.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, NELSON HURD FULTs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ada, in the county of Hardin and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Automatic Rope-Olampers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved automatie rope tightener and elamper, and more particularly to a device adapted to be used for temporarily compressing and holding a shock of eornstalks or grain while being bound with a band of straw or any suitable material.
The object of my invention is to provide a device of this character by means of which the rope may be adjusted from either direction in order that the shock may not be twisted out of position, as is the case when the rope is adjusted from one direction only, and a device which can be instantly released when the shock is bound.
My invention consists in the arrangement and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts throughout both views, Figure l is a plan View of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the device unlocked.
In the drawings, the letters a and b represent the two sections of my rope-clamp pivoted or hinged together by a rivet c, which rivet also passes through locking device (Z. J ournaled in the outer end of said section a between extended arms a is a pulley-wheel f, placed a sufficient distance from the body of said section to form an opening g for rope it. Rope-guides '5 are formed on said arms Rising vertically from the inner central portion of section a and extending horizontally over section b is the locking-lever k, by means of which the device is locked and unlocked. In the end of section b is formed a longitudinal pulley-slot 1, having a side opening in for the reception of rope h and provided with rope-guides 1L and having a pulley-wheel 0, journaled in said slot a suitable distance from the body of said section to allow an opening p for rope h. The face of sections a and I) (No model.)
has raised edges or flanges q to form a recess for the reception of locking device (Z, which locking device consists of oppositely-extending arms s and 2f, having concaved ends which reach to within a short distance of each pulley. The portion of the clamp between said arms is a substantially oval shaped slot, through which passes the locking-lever is, the clamp being pivotally mounted on the rivet 0. The said parts can be constructed of malleable or cast iron.
In operation the clamp is first unlocked by raising the lever A, which operation lowers the pulley-wheels, thus forcing them from proximity to ends of clamping-arms s and t. The rope is then knotted at one end to prevent said end from slipping through the pulley and the other end passed downwardly through the slot or opening g of section a, then passed around the shock and inserted in slot-opening p of section 6. Both ends of the rope are then pulled at the same time until the required compactness of the shock is obtained, when the said ends are released, and the tendency of the shock to open withdraws the rope slightly from the slots. In this backward movement of the rope it catches against the ends of the pivoted locking device, and the tension on the rope causes the members a and Z) to gradually assume a horizontal position, when the rope is securely clamped and the device automatically locked. When the shock is bound, the lever is raised and the released rope removed from the open slot on.
It will be seen that both ends of a rope encircling a shock can be pulled at the same time or either end can be pulled either by one or two men, thus keeping the shock in a vertical position, and when the ends of rope are released the device automatically locks itself.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. A rope clamping or securing device consisting of two hinged members having pulleys mounted therein, and a pivotally-mounted rope-clamp between said pulleys having arms extending to close proximity thereto, as set forth.
2. In an automatic rope-clamping device,
consisting of two members hinged at their center and carrying pulley-wheels at their ends, a rope-clamping member pivotally mounted between said pulleys having arms extending to a point adjacent said pulleys, and a lever connected with one of said members for unsisting of two members hinged together and having recessed faces, one of said members having extended arms provided with ropeguides, pulley-wheels mounted between said arms, a rope-slot and an unlocking-lever, and the other member having a pulley-slot formed in its end, said slot having rope-guides thereon and a pulley mounted therein and a side opening, and a rope looking or clamping device pivotally mounted between said pulleys and in the said recesses, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. s
