WIRE STRETGHER.

ATEN T FFICE.
JOHN NV. POTITER, OF FLORIEN, LOUISIANA.
WlRE-STRETCHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 769,404, dated September 6, 1904.
Application filed June 15,1904. Serial No. 212,682. No model.)
"/1 (LIZ 11-71mm it 71mg; concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN LPOTTIJR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Florien, Sabine parish, and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vire- Stretcher-s; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in wire-stretchers; and the object of the invention is to produce a simple and efficient mechanical appliance for gripping and securely holding the wire while being stretched.
More specifically, the invention comprises a wire-stretching device consisting of a handle with a fixed jaw and carrying a pivotal jaw, which is actuated by means of a rotatable shaft having a hand-wheel thereon.
The invention consists, further, in various details of construction and in arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved wire-stretching apparatus. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detailed view showing the manner of actuating the pivotal jaw. Fig. 3 is an edge elevation of the device.
Reference now being had to the details of construction by letter, A designates a shaft, which may be of any size or shape, and B designates a fixed jaw secured to one face of said shaft and preferably at the end thereof.
One face of said jaw is roughened, as at B, in order to secure frictional contact with the pivotal angle-lever, the free end of which forms a jaw (J. Said angle-lever is pivotally mounted upon a pin .D, carried by said shaft. Said jaw O is roughened and is adapted to cooperate with the roughened surface of the jaw B to securely hold the wire E between said jaws.
Mounted to have a rotary movement in bearings F, formed in the collars or rings F, is a rod K, one end of which has a hand-wheel K fixed thereto, while the other end is pivoted to the curved end of jaw O, and a portion of said rod is threaded and engages threaded apertures in the stationary collar, whereby the rod is rotated in one direction or the other said jaw C may be thrown toward or away from the fixed jaw B.
In operation a wire to be stretched is inserted between the two jaws, and by turning the hand-wheel K. the pivotal jaw may be thrown in contact with the wire, causing the latter to be securely gripped between the jaws, after which the lever may be fulcrumed over any object and the wire stretched to the extent desired, after which the device may be detached from the wire by rotating rod in the opposite direction, thus causing the pivotal jaw to be thrown from contact with the wire.
\Vhile l have shown a particular detailed construction of the device illustrating the features of my invention. it will be understood that I may vary the details of the device, if desired, without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A wire-stretcher comprising a shaft with a fixed jaw thereon, a pivotal jaw carried by said shaft, a rotatable rod, hearings in which said rod is journaled, a pin carried by said rod and having a play in an elongated slot in the curved end of said pivotal jaw, a handwhecl fixed to the end of said rod and adapted to turn in a cut-away portion of said shaft, whereby the end of said pivotal jaw may be thrown toward or away from the fixed jaw, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto atlix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN \V. POTTER.
