WILLIAM B. O. PE ABO DY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 76,940, dated April 21', 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN SCORING GAMES.
6th: snare rrftmh In in ilItSt Enters 'fiktitlti mm noting and at tip same.
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. O. PEABODY, of Boston, in the. county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, havc invented a new and improved Device for Scoring Games, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a plan view of the inside of a box, with the dials removed.
Figure 2 is a plan view of one ofthe dials.
Figure 3 is a transverse vertical section.
Figures 4 and 5 are modifications of my device.
The object of my invention is' to produce a compact, portable device for scoring and registering games by means of pointers or hands, so arranged in connection with dials that by moving one of the hands to score the points in the game, the other hand will score the number of games.
And the inventionconsists ot' a series of dials arranged within a box, upon which dials are marked two series of points'and numbers, arranged in circles one within the other, the outer circle being divided into as many equal parts as there are points in the particular game to be scored, and the inner circle, being divided into a certain number of equal parts, to designate the number of games played, in combination with two point. ers or hands, so connected by a system of gear-wheels and pinions that while one handis moved to score the points in the game, the other hand will indicate the number of games played.
i The invention further consists in arranging, within the two portions of a box, separate sets of correspond ingdials and pointers, so as'to adapt the same to the. two sides or parties in a game, and also admit of the instrument being conveniently carried in the pocket, the position of the game remaining undisturbed.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a circular box, of any suitable size, and formed of two equal parts. Within each portion are arranged two gear-wheels, B 0, connected by pinions. 'E is a plate or bar, supporting the upper ends of the spindles of the gear-wheels.
The hands or pointers, a I), are so connected with the gearing that while the longer hand is moving around the entire circle, the shorter hand will. pass from one point to another on the inner circle. D represents a din], of which there may be as many as desired, for scoring difi'erent games, such as whist, enchre, eribbage, &c. They are arranged one upon the other in the two portions of" the box, so that any one can be placed uppermost for the particular game to be played, by simply taking of. the hands and exchanging the dials.
Figs. 4 and 5 represent a modification of my invention, the box being'squarc, and the two hands arranged on separate dials, the gearing being suitably arranged for giving the proper motions to the hands. It will thus be seen that each step in the game will be readily scored or registered, and, in case of interruption, the box can be closed, and the position of the game will remain undisturbed until the game is renewed.
.What I claim-as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, i's
1. The series of changeable, differently-marked dials, in combination with the scoring and registeringapparatus; as set forth.
2. The box A A, formed in two equal parts, and containing the duplicate sets of changeable dials and iruiicating-apparatns, as and for the purpose specified.
In testimonywhereef, Ihave signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
W. B. O. PEABODY.
