UNITED STA E-sf PATENT OFFICE.
ALLEN PHILIP BOYER, OF GOSHEN, INDIANA.
SWING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 769,298, dated September 6, 1904. Application filed August 1, 1903." Serial No. 167,839. (Ilo model.)
To all whom it may concern} 7 Be it known that I, ALLEN PHILIP BOYER, a
citizen of the United States, residing at the' city of Goshen, in the county of Elkhart and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in swings. v
It relates particularly to animproved swing in which theseats move back and forth without being suspended.
The objects of this invention are, first, to provide an improved swing which shall have .agliding movement or motion; second, to pro- .vide an lmproved slwing having a gliding movement which is simple in its construction and easy to operate; third, to provide an improved swing which has considerable scope of movement and-is at the same time very compact.
Further objects and objects relating to structural details will fully appear in the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
. The invention is clearly defined, and pointed out in the claims.
. A structure embodying the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure lis a side elevational View of my improved sw1ng.- Flg. 2 1s a plan View thereof. Fig. 3 1s an end elevation. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail sectional view taken on a line corresponding to line i 4 of Fig. 3 looking in the direction of the little arrows at the end of the section-line.
In the drawings similar letters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
, centered.
, The seats B are carried by a frame, and this frame is supported on the rockers D, which travel on the platform. The seat-carrying frame consists of side bars E, having upwardly-projecting standards a at each end arranged in pairs. On the top of the standards a is a cross-piece a, and they are provided with suitable braces, as a, to retain them rigidly in position. The tracks or ways G are carried'by this frame. These tracks rest upon the double-headed rockers D, and thereby support the frame and its attached parts.
The rockers D are connected together in pairs by cross-pieces it and are adapted to travel upon the side rails A of the platform. One of the side rails A on one side and one of the tracks G on the other are grooved to form guides for the rockers. Both of the platform-rails A may be grooved, also both of the tracks G, if desired. I find, however,
than I can secure the best results by grooving diagonally opposite rails and tracks, as described, as this removes the necessity for structural accurateness. The movement of the rockers is controlled by links 6, which are pivotally secured to the ways G- and to the side rails A of the platform. These links 't' are provided with slots c", which engage suitable pins. on the rockers. (See Fig. 4, where the movement of the rockers in one direction is indicated by dotted lines.) The slotted linksz' permit the free movement of V the rockers and serve as effective stops and assist in retaining the rockers upon the platform. The links i keep the rockers properly The pairs of rockers D are also connected together by links 6, which are pivotally secured to the rockers at a point near their peripheries. This keeps the pairs of rockers properly spaced in regard to each other and prevents the same creeping along the platform. These, however, may be dispensed with, as the links 71 are suificient to accomplish this result in all ordinary uses.
The foot-rest is supported by the side bars F,- which are pivotally secured to the rockers by the rods f. These rods f are preferably located at a point below the center of the rockers. Thus arranged motion may be imparted to the structure by the user occupying the seat, a slight push of the foot being sufficient to cause the frame to glide to and fro on the rockers. The foot-rest consists of side pieces d with slats (Z across the same. (See Figs. 1, 2, and 4:.) This foot-rest may be adjusted to the position indicated by dotted lines in- Fig. 1 when it is desired to use the swing as a couch or the like.
The rockers D are preferably formed of heads formed of corresponding arcs of a circle. They may, however, be shaped as desired, but are preferably made to correspond in the matter of curvature. I find it sometimes desirable to modify the curvature of the rockers so that they act as stops toward the'end of the movement, as when they are formed of perfect arcs of a circle I find they sometimes move too freely to suit all requirements.
The side pieces C of the back are secured together by suitable rounds, as c, to which are properly shaped to permit this.
slats, as 0, are secured. The lower ends of the side pieces G are notched or slotted to engage the rounds g. The center round 0 is extended through the side pieces to form pins to engage the teeth of the curved rack-bar a. By this arrangement the back of the seat may be adjusted as desired The rearward or backward adjustment is accomplished by lifting the back to disengage the pins 0 from the teeth of the rack-bar and allowing it to fall into the proper teeth. The forward adjustment is accomplished by simply pulling the back forward, as the teeth of the rack-bar \Nhen released, the projecting pins will automatically engage the teeth of the, rack-bar. By this arrangement of the parts there is no perceptible up-and-down movement imparted to the seats or to the foot-rest in the movement of the swing.
The swing may be operated by the user with a very slight exertion. This may be accomplished, as before remarked, by a slight pressure of the foot of the occupant upon the foot-rest. The structure is also very compact and simple in'its structure and is very strong and durable.
I have illustrated and described my improved swing in the form preferred by me on account of economy in construction and ease in operation. I am, however, aware that it is capable of very great variation in structural details without departing from my invention, and I desire to claim the same broadly as Well as specifically.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
