SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 769,299, dated September 6, 1904.

To. all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALLEN P. 'BOYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Goshen, in the county of Elkhart and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and uesful Improvements in Swings, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to an improved swing in which the seats move back and forth without being suspended.
The objects of the invention will appear from the description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined, and pointed out in the claims.
A structure embodying the features of my invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of-a structure embodying the features of myinvention. Fig. 2 ,is a detail transverse sectional view through the foot-rst-and its support.- Fig. 3 is a detail view, partially in section, .showing the manner of supporting the back of the seats.
In the drawings similar letters of reference refer'to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, a platform or base is formed of side rails A, which are secured together and retained in proper relation by cross-bars A; Suitable diagonal braces are provided to hold the parts rigidly in position. The side-rails A serve tosupport and guide the swinging parts which move thereon. The seats B are carried by a frame and the frame is supported on the rockers D. This frame consists of the side bars 6. Standards a, arranged in pairs, project upwardly from the side bars. These standards are provided'with suitable braces to retain them rigidly in position. The seats B are supportedby suitable cross-pieces on the standards a. Ways or tracks E are carried by the standards beneath the seats. These ways or tracks rest upon the rockers D. The

In referring to the rockers as consisting of pairs I have considered the rockers as consisting of the double parts D D at each end, the two rockers, one at each end of the platform, constituting the pair. r
The foot-rest is supported by the bars F, which are pivotally secured to the rockers D by the pins f. The slats I of the foot-rest are secured to cross-pieces I, so that, if desired, the foot-rest may be raised to form a bed or couch. The movement of the foot-rest is also reciprocatory or gliding. I prefer to pivot the bars F below the center point on the rockers. Motion may be imparted to the structure by the user occupying the seat, a slight push with the I find it somefeet being sufficient to cause the frame, with IOO standards a. backward adjustment is accomplished by lifting the same to disengage the pins 0 from the teeth of the toothed bar and allowing it to fall into the proper tooth. The forward adjustment is accomplished by simply pulling the back forward, as the projecting pins will automatically engage the teeth of the bars a'. By this arrangement of the parts there is no perceptible up-and-down movement imparted to the seats or to the foot-rest, and the movement is imparted by the user at a very slight exertion.
I have illustrated and described my improved swing in the form preferred by me on account of its economy in construction and ease in operation. I am aware, however, that it is capable of very great variation in structural details without departing from my invention, and I desire to claim the same broadly as well as specifically.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a suitable base or platform; a frame consisting of side bars 6; standards a. secured to said side bars; seats carried by said standards; rockers D arranged in pairs adapted to travel on said platform; tracks or ways E on said frame adapted to rest on said rockers; rods g carried by said rockers; triangular-shaped stops 7: adapted to engage said rods secured to said platform and to said ways whereby the movement of said rockers is controlled; bars F pivotally secured to said rockers; and a foot-rest carried by said bars F, all coacting for the purpose specified.
2. In astructure of the class described, the combination of a suitable base or platform; a suitable frame; seats carried by said frame; rockers arranged in pairs adapted to travel on said platform; tracks or Ways on said frame adapted to rest on said rockers; triangularshaped stops on said ways and said platform; rods carried by said rockers adapted to engage said triangular-shaped stops whereby the movement of said rockers is controlled; bars pivotally secured to said rockers below the central point thereof; and a suitable foot-rest carried by said bars, all coacting for the purpose specified.
3. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a suitable base or platform; a suitable frame; seats carried by said frame; rockers arranged in pairs adapted to travel on said platform; tracks or ways on said frame adapted to rest on said rockers; triangularshaped stops on said ways and said platform; rods carried by said rockers adapted to engage said triangular-shaped stops whereby by said frame; rockers arranged in pairs;
tracks or ways on said frame adapted to rest on said rockers; triangular-shaped stops on said ways; rods carried by said rockers adapted to engage said triangular-shaped stops whereby the movement of the said rockers is controlled; bars pivotally secured to said rockers below the central point thereof; and a suitable foot-rest carried by said bars, all coacting for the purpose specified.
5. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a suitable frame; seats carried by said frame; rockers arranged in pairs; tracks or ways on said frame adapted to rest on said rockers; triangular-shaped stops on said ways; rods carried by said rockers adapted to engage said triangular shaped stops whereby the movement of the said rockers is controlled; bars pivotally secured to said rockers; and a suitable foot-rest carried by said bars, all coacting for the purpose specified.
6. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a suitable base or platform; a suitable frame; seats carried by said frame; rockers arranged in pairs adapted to travel on said platform; tracks or ways on said frame adapted to rest on said rockers; triangularshaped stops on said ways and said platform; rods carried by said rockers adapted to engage said triangular shaped stops whereby the movement of the said rockers is controlled; bars pivotally secured to said rockers below the central point thereof, all coacting for the purpose specified.
7. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a suitable frame; seats carried by said frame; rockers arranged in pairs; tracks or ways on said frame adapted to rest on said rockers; triangular-shaped stops on said ways and said platform; rods carried by said rockers adapted to engage said triangular-shaped stops whereby the movement of said rockers is controlled; bars pivotally secured to said rockers, all coacting for the purpose specified.
8. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a suitable base or platform; a
suitable frame; seats carried by said frame;
rockers arranged in pairs adapted to travel on said platform; tracks or ways on said frame adapted to rest on said rockers; triangularshaped stops on said ways; rods carried by said rockers adapted to engage said triangular-shaped stops whereby the movement of said rockers is controlled; bars pivotally secured to said rockers below the central point thereof all coacting for the purpose specified.
9. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a suitable frame; seats carried by said frame; rockers arranged in pairs; tracks or Ways on said frame adapted to rest on said rockers; triangular-shaped stops on said Ways; rods carried by said rockers adapted to engage said triangular shaped stops whereby the movement of said rockers is controlled; bars pivotally secured to said rockers, all coacting for the purpose specified.
10. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a suitable base or platform; a suitableframe; seats carried by said frame; rockers arranged in pairs adapted to travel on said platform; tracks or Ways on said frame adapted to rest on said rockers; triangularshaped stops on said Ways and said platform; rods carried by said rockers adapted to engage said triangular shaped stops whereby the movement of said rockers is controlled, for the purpose specified.
11. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a suitable base or platform; a suitable frame; seats carried by said frame;
