PATENT OFFICE.
' STEAM-SUPERHEATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 769,297', dated September 6, 1904.
Application led March l22, 19-04.
T all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JRGEN BJRNsTAD, engineer, a subject of the King of Sweden and Norway, residing at River View, Victoria Road, Charlton, in the county of Kent, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam Superheaters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the class of apparatus wherein tubes arranged like what are known as Field tubes are employed, these tubes being immersed in the hot gases or cooling medium, by which vapors or gases passing through the said tubes are heated or cooled, and the apparatus in accordance with my invention is more especially designed for use in the flues of steam-boilers for superheating the steam generated in the boilers, and has for its object to provide a simple and readilyconstructed apparatus in which the steam is very equally distributed, so as to be caused to pass practically equally into all of the tubes of the apparatus; but my invention is not limited to that use, as it can be used generally for effecting interchange of temperature between fluids, whether in the form of vapors, gases, or liquids. For simplicity of description I will presume that it is to be employed as a steam-superheater, and from this description its general application will also be under-l I will describe myinvention with reference to the accompanying drawings, Figures l and 2 of which are sectional elevations at'r'ight angles to each other, showing part of the spaces in the setting of the boiler with which the superheater is used, the said superheaterspaces being in communication with the fines. conducting the hot gases from the furnace or furnaces to the chimney and being -provided or not with means for cutting oif the said spaces from the flues when desired.
The outer tubes a havetheir lower ends l closed, and their upper ends are expanded or screwed or otherwise secured in the lower plate?) of an outer box, preferably made of two dished plates b and Z22, with abutting flanges bolted together.V In this outer box is supported a smaller box c of such a size as to leave all round it a space for steam between it and Serial No. 199,410. (No model.)
theouterbox. The body of this inner and in longitudinal halves, 'with removable end pieces c2, the whole being connected by studs and nuts d cl2, as shown. The said end pieces c2 or the bolts CZ Z2 (or both) and also other bolts or feet at intervals, if desired, can be used as rests to support the lower side of the said inner and smaller box c at the requisite distance from the lower plate Za of the outer box. The upper ends of the inner tubes e are expanded or screwed or otherwise secured in the lower side of the inner and smaller box c. A transverse division f across the inside of the outer box divides the space between it and the inner and smaller box cinto two compartments 723 Zit. Connections with o eninffs in the upper plate of the outer box are made at heated and at /t with the place to which the superheated steam is to be supplied, the opening g communicating with the compartment 3 and the opening communicating with the other compartment, of.
The steam to be superheated passes into the compartment b3 above the inner and smaller box aand passes to beneath the said box c and down the set of outer tubes a communicating with this compartment b3, and then the said steam passes up the inner tubes e of the said set and into the inner and smaller box c, along which the said steam passes and descends the inner tubes c of the other set of tubes, and then the said steam passes up the vouter tubes a of this set into the second compartment of of the outer box, from whence it passes to the place of utilization.
is a casting (on the setting around the spaces for the superheater) by which the superheater is suspended in the said spaces by the outer box resting on the said casting.
j shows the attachment for the safety-valve'.
By constructing apparatus as described it can be readily taken apart for cleaning or repairs. i
. Having now particularly described and as"- `smaller box can be conveniently made of recy Vtangular pipe form, as shown in Fig. 2, and
certained the nature of my said invention and IOO l. In superheaters, or apparatus Yfor etfectl l compartments and the outer members of another set communicating with the other of the said compartments, the inner members of the said -Field tubes all communicating with the inner box.
2. In superheaters, or apparatus for eecting interchange of temperature, the combination of an outer box made of dished iianged plates bolted together and an inner box arranged inside the outer box so that a space surrounds the inner box, a division separating the said space into two compartments, an inlet communicating with one compartment and an outlet communicating with the other compartment, and sets of Field tubes having the outer members of one set communicating with one of the said compartments and the outer members of another set communicating with the other of the said compartments, the inner members oi the said Field tubes all communicating with the inner box.
3. ln superheaters, or apparatus for eil'ecting interchange of temperature, the combination of an outer box made of dished iianged plates bolted together and an inner box made of longitudinal parts and end pieces secured by bolts and nuts and arranged inside the outer box so that a space surrounds the inner box, a division separating the said space into two compartments, an inlet communicating with one compartment and an outlet communicating with the other compartment and sets of Field tubes having the outer members of one set communicating with one of the said compartments and the outer members of another set communicating with the other oi the said compartments, the inner members oi' the said Field tubes all communicating with the inner box.
In testimony whereoiI I have signed my name to this speciiication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses:
J ORGEN BJ ORNSTAD.
