fNI E/VTOR By M fect by enlarging the ends Patented. September 6,1904.
PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM W. SLY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
RUMBLHE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 769,192, da d September 6, 1904.
7 Application filed February 23, 1904. Serial No. 194,740. (No model.)
To all. whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. SLY, a citi zen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the countyof Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rumbles, of which the following is a specification. 5 r
This invention relates to rumbles or tum- Ming-barrels, and particularly to such a device used for cleaning cast-iron pipes, and embodies the idea of enlarging the ends of the mill forthe purpose of preventing Wear incident to the flanges of the pipe.
In a simple cylindrical barrel or rumble the flanges of iron pipe tumbled therein contact edgewise With the walls of the barrel, With the result that in a short time the barrel is cut through and worn out. I remedy this deof the barrel diametrically, so that the flangesofthe pipe are contained in the enlarged diameters, which causes the pipe to lie flat in the barrel and obviates the'wear above referred to.
In the-accompanying drawings, wherein an embodiment ofthe invention is shown, Figure 1 1s a plan View. Fig. 2 is an end view. Fig.
'3 is a longitudinal section.
Referring specifically to the drawings, the body of the barrel is indicated at 6, and this may be constructed in any known 'or suitable manner, as of "cast staves' or of rolled plate metal- The enlarged ends are produced at both .ends of this cylinder, conveniently by shrinking a ring 7 around the end of the cylinderand bolting thereto one end of a short cylinder 8, to the other end of which the head 9 is bolted. The body of the mill is provided,
with doors 10, secured by suitable fastenings, (indicated at 11.) Extending across each head, Within the same, is a perforated plate 11 of known construction, and the hollow trunnions 12 of the head lead to the dust-box 13,
from which the dust may be exhausted in'the usual manner. Dust from the body of the mill or barrel escapes through the perforated plate and the trunnions to the dust-box.
Gears for rotating the rumble are indicated at 14: and 15.
It will be appreciated that when pipe is put in the rumble to be cleaned the flangesat the end thereofwill. project into the enlargements produced at the end of the barrel, so that there will be no Wear from the flanges and the pipe will lie flatly upon the Wall of the barrel. In addition to avoiding the wear incident to the flanges this construction will clean. pipe in a more efl iclent manner, since all of theoutside of the pipe will or may be Various modifications may be made in the shape, size, proportions, form, and construction of the rumble Without departing from the scope of my invention, which is not limited except as indicated. by the following claims. Y
What I claim as'new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is
1. A rumble comprising a cylindrical body having a door therein, and an enlarged end constructed to receive enlarged ends of artioles placed in the rumble.
2. A rumble comprising a cylinder, rings around the ends thereof, short cylinders of greater diameter secured to the rings, the interior of the cylinders being unobstructed, and heads fitted to the said short cylinders.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name tothis specification in the presence of two'subscribing Witnesses.
. WILLIAM SLY.
