Specification of Letters Patent.

To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. Si-IULTZ, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Portland, county of Multnomah, State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Scouring- Cases, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to scouring; cases used in connectionwith grain cleaning machines.
My invention has for its object the building of a scouring case in` which the abading or scouring surfaces shall consist of a mineral compound, for in my experiments such surfaces give the best lresults. The scouring surfaces must `alternate with per-- forated or Ventilating sections, and in order to render the construction of my scouring sections convenient, it is necessary to build the case in individual units, or` sections.V
These sections are then assembled and fastened together by means permitting the adjustment of the Ventilating `sections relatively to the abrading sections, so as to bring their internal or working faces into true cir cular alinement. This feature is essential because the working faces of the Ventilating sections receive relatively little wear, while the scouring surfaces will be worn down in time; and, hence, in order to maintain the working faces of the alternate scouring and Ventilating sections in true circular form, the construction of the case must be such as to permit the relative adjustment of the Ventilating sections. Such relative adjustment is effected by me by providing means Whereby the Ventilating sections may be readily set outward.
Furthermore, in `my improved scouring case the individual parts are so constructed and assembled as to render and maintain the same perfectly rigid-both with respect to their unit construction and to the case `as a whole-when the partsare fastened together. The construction of the case in units also facilitates transportation.
The above described and incidental features embodied in my inventioni attain as hereinafter fully described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
Inthe latter: Figure 1 shows an end elevation, partlyin section, of my scouring case; the broken lines of this figure show how the Ventilating sections, the internal faces of which receive Very little wear, may
be moved outward radially so as to be alined with the working faces of the abradiiig sections, when the last mentioned faces have b ecome worn away; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of my case with portions broken away and shown in section, so as to illustrate more clearly the interior construction of my case; Figs. 4i, 5 and G show details of construction, in isometric perspective, of the abutting end-portions of the alternate Ventilating and abrading sections, which are fastened'together in the building of my case, and further show such parts in the order in which they are assembled. The other details shown in these figures ,will be described in the body of thc specication; and Figi is an end View of one of the abradant sections with the end closure-plate removed.`
My case is built of alternate abrading and Ventilating sections, removably and adjustably fastened together. The abrading seci tion of my case consists of a circular plate segment e, made of thin metal, having its lateral portions flanged as at f. f; see also Fig. 3. Affixed to the longitudinal ends of this shell by rivets, ,(7, are frame members, CZ, d, formed like flanged ring-segments- Ailixed to the flanges, f, f, of the shell are longitudinal plates c (see Fig. 4;). The latter and the ring segments, cl, d, form the four sides of` a pocket on the interior of the abrading section, which is filled with the `abrading mineral composition h; and in` `order to give the latter a better adhering surface, I have fastened open mesh wire cloth to the inner face of the cylindrical` shell by rivets j. For the composition I prefer to use such as described in my Letters Patent of the United States dated December is, i911, No. 1,011,504.
On the exterior of the plate, e, is fastened one (or more) longitudinally extendingreinforcing anglc-iron 7c. The fastening rivets, Z, thereof extend through the wire cloth t' and the shell c.
It is to be noted that the abrading section thin metal,`having its side portions formed into out-turned flanges n, n. The plate 7n is provided with the usual apertures 0, through which the impurities are withdrawn CIV or working faces of the abrading and venti- Vlating sections, a, Z), are so curved as to Y form a continuous circular, cylindrical surface.
Angle-irons, p, 70, (see Fig. 6) extending longitudinally on the exterior of the ventilating sections, and placed in abutment' with the flanges 1t, n, are fastened on the exterior of the shell miby rivets g.
The flanges, f, f, of the shell, e, of the abrading sectionlhave bolt-holes f and radial slots (c, n', 10') are provided in the longitudinal plates c, in the `flanges, n, of the shell of the Ventilating section, and the angle irons p. See Figs. 3 to 6. Bolts, r, passed through these slots fasten the parts Aadjustably together.
Segmental bands, t, overlying the shell of the Ventilatingsection, and fastened to the latter by the rivets g reinforce said shell so as to impart rigidity to this Vsection of my case.
In practice the working or abrading surface of the composition z. willwear away evenly, and in order that the scouring chamber may be maintained in a true circular, cylindrical form it will be necessary for t-he non-wearing surfaces, that is to'say, the inner face ofthe Ventilating section, to be occasionally alined therewith. c Such adjustment is provided for inthe following manner: Thescouringcase is stationary, while the scouringv cylinder revolves inside the case. In order that the case be held in constant Vrelationship with the revolving cylins der, (of which the shaft 3 is only shown in the drawings) two` stationary disks 2 are inserted rin the ends of the scouring case. rIhesedisks are rigidly mounted on the base of the machine in connection with which the scouringl case is used; the shaft 8 of the scouring cylinder extending through central holes 2a of the disks 2.
Set-screws 4 are threaded in thev segmental bands z5 and the shell of the Ventilating sections and bear on the disksV 2. When the "abrading surface Vhas been worn away, as indicated in exaggerated degree by the broken line a in Fig. l, the bolts a" are loosened, and the set-screws 4 turned to force the Ventilating section?) outward, as indicated 'by the broken lines b of Fig. l; in so doing bringing the working faces of the alternating sections of my case yin circular alinement with each other. bolts 1', the parts will again be held rigidly together.

6. In a Vscouring' case having alternate abrading and Ventilating sections, abrading sections made of a thin circular'metal plate having its sides bent outward to form radially disposed flanges, said flanges perforated for receiving bolts, and said circular plate having hea-vier metal members at its four sides forming a pocket on the inner face of said section; a mineral abradant filling said pocket; in combination with Ventilating sections consisting of perforated circular plates having their sides formed into out-turned flanges, perforated for receiving bolts; and bolts passing through said perforations of companion flanges, perforations of one of the companion flanges being elongated.
7. In a scouring ease having alternate abrading and Ventilating sections, abrading sections consisting of a metal shell having radially disposed flanges formed at its sides, a filling of mineral abradant in said shells, Ventilating sections having companion flanges formed at their sides, bolts inserted in said perforations provided in the companion flanges, disks in the ends of the scouring case, set-screws threaded through the body of the Ventilating section bearing on said disks, whereby the Ventilating sections are adjusted, said perforations of the flanges being adapted to permit such adjustment.
8. In a scouring case having alternate abrading and Ventilating sections, abrading sections consisting of a metal shell having radially disposed flanges formed at its sides, a filling of mineral abradant in said shells, Ventilating sections having companion flanges formed at their sides, bolts inserted in said perfo ations provided in the companion flanges, and means for adjusting the Working faces of the Ventilating sections with those of the abrading sections, said perforations of the flanges being adapted to permit such adjustment.
