Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. HOXIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New-York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Generators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to water-tube steamgenerators in which tiers of 'water-tubes areV connected collectively at their opposite ends with headers. A series of these tiers of tubes and connected headers are placed side by side and form a group which constitutes the main steam-generating surface. The headers are preferably made in serpentine form longitudinally in order t obtain a staggered relative arrangement of the tubes of each tier and to more closely nest the headers together, and thereby place a greater number of the tiers of tubes within a given space.
The type of steam -generator shown and embodying the present improvements is the Well-'known modern marine generator of the Babcock t Wilcox Company, consisting, essentially, of a group of water-tubes inclined upwardly from. the front of the generator, a transverse steam and water drum located above the group of tubes at the front end thereof, and a furnace-chamber beneath` the group of tubes of gradually-increasing size from. front to rear, due to the inclination' of the group of tubes and the relative horizonta arrangement'of the furnace-grate.

2 represents the main group of water tubes; 3, the connected headers; 4, the steam and water drum, arranged transversely at the front of the generator and communicating with the headers at front by nipples 5 and rear by circulating-pipes 6, respectively. The headers 3 of the main group of water-tubes are also connectedy near the lower end with tubes 7 of largerdiameter than the tubes composing the group. In the use of the larger tubes 7 more or less intervening space is allowed and a roof (not shown) partially covering the furnacechamber is built upon or placed between these tubes. The 'side and intermediate leg eXtens'ions l() of the headers 3 at the front and rear are connected with large tubes 1l, preferably rectangular in .cross -section and placed nearly. or quite in contact to form the partition and side walls of the furnace-space. These large tubes not only increase the water capacity of the generators, but in connection with the header extension-leg l0 present a large and additional steam-generating surface to the direct action of the iire. The leg extensions 10 are also connected with lintels or cross-boxes 9 at the front, which communicate with the intermediate heaters, and with enlarged tubes l near their ends, that connect with the rear water-legs.
In the leg extension of the header when made in a separate piece I have devised a novel and secure construction in joining the leg to the header, (shown enlarged in Fig. 4,) which consists in' forming a socket upon the end of the leg 10 and fitting the end of the header 3 therein, as shown. This construction prevents a lateral displacement of the parts and relieves the strain upon the nipple 12, which is expanded in the communicating passage in the usual way. At the joint of the header and leg a slight countersink 13 may be made to provide room for the expansion of the nipple upon the respective inwardlyprojecting flanges or bearings provided to secure the nipplein place. In this type of water-tube generators the water tubes or boxes that form the sides and partition-walls of the furnace-space have been connected with water-conduits arranged at the sides of the generator which are in circulatory connection with the steam-drum and separated from the headers that include the main group of tubes. In the present invention the supporting water-legs with which these boxes communicate are connected directly with the headers both at the sides and at the intermediate points of division of the furnacespace, and thereby more effectually support the main parts of the generator at different places and provide a more simple construetion by dispensing with the side conduits and tubes.
Having thus fully described my invention, I wish to state that I am aware that a series of water-tubes located on each side of a generator and connected at their front and rear ends to upright water columns or conduits which are connected to the drum, the lower tubes of said series having flat inner faces forming the side walls of the furnace-space and also a central water-wall communicating with a header by an extended pipe connection, are referred to in United States Letters Patent to Pratt, No. 570,229, dated October 27, 1896. The present invention is differentiated from the structure shown and described in said patent in the continuity of a number of the headers whichconnect the group of watertubes to or below the furnace-grate. In said patent the upright water-columns are separated from and connected independent of the headers and group of water-tubes and do not form a support to said headers and the connected group of water-tubes, as in my present invention.
What I claim herein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A water-tube steam-generator having a group of water-tubes connecting a series of front and rear headers and supporting waterlegs formed by an extension of a number of said headers.
2. A water-tube steam-generator having a group of water-tubes connecting` a series oi front and rear headers with water-legs made separate and forming an extension thereof and connected by suitable means.
3. A water-tube steam-generator having a group of water-tubes connecting a series of front and rear headers with water-legs made separate and extending therefrom and connected by a supporting-socket and expanded nipple substantially as set forth.
1. A water-tube steam-generator having a group of water-tubes connecting a series of front and rear headers` a number of said front and rear headers extending to or below the furnace-grate said extended portion connected by water tubes or boxes to form the sides or partitions of the furnace-space.
5. A water-tube steam-generator having a. group of water-tubes connecting a series of front and rear headers, a number of said headers extending to or below the furnace-grate and connected by cross boxes or lintels that communicate with the extensions and with water-circulating tubes independent of the tubes forming the group.
6. A water-tube boiler having vertical front and rear headers connected by tubes inclined upwardly from front to rear, a transverse steam and water drum over the front header and a supporting-leg at each corner of the headers and at the middle of the front headers, substantially as described.
7. A water-tube boiler having upwardlyextending front and rear headers connected by inclined water-tubes, su1iportinglcgs constituted by downward extensions of the corner front and rear headers and of au intermediate front and an intermediate rear header and water-tubes connecting and corresponding front and rear supporting-legs substantially as described.
