Patented August 23, 1904.
PATENT OFFICE.
IRVING H. WALKER, OF. LEROY, NEW YORK.
PACKING OR CUSHION FOR SHIPPING PURPOSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 768,494, dated August 23, 1904:.
Application'filed May 1'7, 1904. Serial No. 208,415. (No model.)
To all whom, it nasty concern:
Be it known that I, IRVING H. WALKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leroy, in the county of Genesee and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Packings or Cushions for-Shipping Purposes, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention relates to improvements in packing, more especially .for fruit-crates or shipping-cases, boxes, or barrels.
Said invention has for its object, among other things, not only to guard against or prevent the bruising of the contents of the shipping-case, barrel, box, orcrateas, for instance, any fruit liable to be thus injured or affected in transit or shipmentbut also to exclude external moisture from the interior of such receptacles and also to provide for-the absorption of internal vapor or steam arising from the sweating of such contents or fruit,
whereby all causes tending to cause said fruit or contents to rot are overcome.
Said invention therefore consists of certain structural features, substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed, and particularly pointed out by the claims.
In the accompanyingdrawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure l is a side or edge view of the invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view thereof. Fig. 3 is a broken perspective view of a barrel with its upper end open, exposing its con tents prior to the placing of the head and cushion therein. Fig. 4: is a vertical section of the same with the head and cushion in position.
In the practicing of'my invention I provide a cushion 1, formed of anupper member or part 1, which is made of waterproof paper or material, and of a lower member 2, also of soft material or paper, with its upper edges turned inward and suitably secured to the under side of the waterproof papermember 1, thus forming, with said upper. member, a chamber to receive or contain, preferably, excelsior or fibrous soft material, the whole forming a cushion or packing for filling in between the fruit or like contents of the barrel or case and its top or head to primarily prevent the bruising of said contents. Said waterproof member 1 has its marginal portion or edge relatively extended, as at l sufficiently to permit, as more fully disclosed by Fig. I, the barrel-head as it is put in place abutting squarely against the extension 1 thus formed and the wedging in place of the latter, and whereby said extension is upraised at its edge or margin to stand above the heador top of the barrel or case, and thus not only serve to exclude any external moisture or water from entering the packing or shipping case via interstices or otherwise through said head ortop, but also prevent such moisture .or water from gaining access around the edge or margin of said top or head, as would be the case if said extension should terminate even flush with said head or top. Said inner or lower member 2 of said cushion or packing is also provided with numerous openings 2, whereby any steam or vapor arising from the fruit or contents of the shipping-case or barrel will be permitted to be absorbed or taken up by the excelsior, hay, orother filling within the cushion or packing proper, and thus counteract any tendency of the rotting of said fruit or contents from that cause, as is apparent.
vLatitude is allowed as to details herein, as they may be changed as circumstances suggest without departing from the spirit of my invention and the latter still be protected.
I claim 1. A packing or cushion for shipping pur-.
2. A packing or cushion'for shipping purposes comprising an upper waterproof pliable member having a laterally-extended portion, and a lower member forming with said upper member a chamber containing a filling, said extended portion adapted to be upraised above the surface of the topor head of said recepthroughout for the purpose stated and said filling serving to absorb vapors or moisture arising from the sweat of the receptacle contents.
ln testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
IRVING ll. \VALl lCl\..
