No. 768,347. I PATENTED AUG. 23, 1904. R. W. SLAUGHTER.
BOLT CUTTER.

PATENT ()FFICE.
BOLT-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 768,347, dated August 23, 1904:.
7 Application filed May 21, 1904. Serial No. 209,108. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT W. SLAUGHTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Henrico andState of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Bolt- (Jutter, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tools or implements for cutting off the ends of bolts which project beyond the nuts thereof, and has for its object to provide an improved device of this character wherein one of the jaws is arranged to engage a nut, so as to form a holder, while the other jaw is performing the cutting opera-' tion, thereby to insure a complete severing of the bolt substantially flush with the nut.
Another object of the invention is to provide the cutting-jaw witha pair of cuttingblades which are disposed at substantially right angles to one another, so as to permit of the tool being used in either of two positions at substantially right angles to one another in order that it may be applied to the bolt longitudinally or transversely thereof, according to the position in which access may be most conveniently had to the bolt.
With these and other objects in view the present invention consists inthe combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details may be made within the scope of-the claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bolt-cutter embodying the features of the present invention. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the jaw member which constitutes the holder. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective View of thejaw member which constitutes the cutter. Fig. 4: is a detail front elevation of the tool applied transversely to a bolt. Fig. 5 is a detail elevation illustrating the device applied longitudinally to a bolt. Like characters of reference designate corresponding parts in each and every figure of the drawings.
at 5, while a cutter member 6 is pivoted to the forward end of the other lever, as indicat'ed at 7. The outer portions of these jaws are embraced between the pair of plates or links 8 and 9, to which the jaws are fulcrumed, as indicated at 10 and 11, respectively, so that by manipulating the levers or handle members the jaws may be rocked upon their fulcrums to alternately draw together and separate the outer ends of the jaws. A bar 12 is rigidly carriedby one of the links and extends rearwardly across the pivotal connection of the handles and is provided with a longitudinal slot 13, receiving the projected end or head of the pin 3, thereby to maintain the blades or links' S and 9 in their proper relation with respect to thehandle members.
Near the outer end of the cutter-jaw 6, in what will be termed the upper face thereof, there is a socket or recess 14 which inclines downwardly toward the lower face of the jaw, so as to produce a longitudinal cutting edge 15 at the lower inneredge of theijaw, and said socket is also inclined forwardly toward the inner edge of the jaw, so as to produce an upstanding cutting edge 16, disposed at substantiallyright angles to the longitudinal cutting edge. The holder-jaw 4 is provided with a socket 17, substantially corresponding to the socket 14, and the outer end of this jaw is projected beyond the outer end of the cutterjaw to constitute a transverse shoulder 18 opposite the transverse cutting edge 16 while the under side of the jaw is projected below the cutterjaw to constitute a longitudinal shoulder 19.
As hereinbefore indicated, the present tool is capable of being applied longitudinally and transversely to a bolt, and for an understanding of the manner of using the device reference will be had more particularly to FigsAL and 5 of the drawings. In 'Fig. 4 there'has been illustrated a nut 20 witha bolt:21--projected through the same, the 'present'tool being applied transversely of the bolt to cut ofi the projected end thereof. When applied in this position, the longitudinal shoulder 19 of the holder-jaw 4 engages one edge of the nut, while the longitudinal cutting edge 15 of the cutting-jaw engages the bolt adjacent the face of the nut, so that by drawing the handles together the cutting-jaw will be forced to cross the bolt, so as to effectually sever the latter substantially flush with the nut. Upon reference to Fig. 5, wherein the tool is shown applied longitudinally to the bolt, it will be seen that the transverse shoulder 18 of the holder 1 engages the nut, while the transverse cutting edge 16 of the cutter engages the bolt.
From the foregoing description it will be understood that the present tool is capable of application to the work in either of two positions at substantially right angles to one another, according to the position in which access may be most readily had to the projected end of the bolt. In each application of the tool there is a shoulder to engage one edge of the nut, so as to form a holder for supporting the tool firmly during the manipulation thereof, and the cutter presents a cutting edge in proper position for engagement with the projected end of the bolt to sever the same close to the face of the nut, which obviates filing of the end of the bolt after it has been cut. Moreover, the recesses 14 and 17 receive the severed portion of the bolt, whereby the latter does not interfere with the drawing together of the jaws.
Having thus described the construction and operation of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. Abolt-cutter comprising a pair of pivotal jaws and handles therefor, corresponding faces of said jaws being provided with registered recesses intersecting their inner edges, the back of one of the recesses intersecting the inner edge of the jaw at the opposite face thereof to form a longitudinal cutting-blade, and the recessed portion of the other jaw being thicker than the first-mentioned jaw and projected beyond the cutting-blade to form a work-engaging shoulder.
2. A bolt-cutter comprising a pair of pivotal jaws and handles therefor, said jaws being provided in corresponding faces with registered recesses intersecting the inner edges thereof, one of the recesses intersecting the inner edge of the jaw at the opposite face thereof to form a longitudinal cutting-blade and the outer wall of the recess intersecting the inner edge of the jaw at the outer extremity thereof to form a cutting-blade disposed at an angle to the longitudinal blade, and the other jaw being projected beyond the first-mentioned jaw to forma work-engaging shoulder and also projected beyond the longitudinal blade of said other jaw to form a longitudinal work-engaging shoulder.
In testimony that 1 claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT \V. SLAUGI'ITER.
