To all whom t it may concern.-

Be it known that I, OLE HATLELI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fosston, in the county of Polk and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inBrusbBreakers; and I do declare the following to be a full,clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to-make and use the same,'reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. I

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in apparatus designed especially for cutting andbreaking brush, and comprises a plow having preferably a curved beam of peculiar construction and adapted to carry a cutting-blade which has its lower end fastened to the point of the plow, the lower end of said cutting-knife in a plane with the bottom of the plow, and in the provision of a subsoilcutter-which is fastened to the bottom ofthe plow and underneath the landside thereof adapted to cut in a horizontal plane. l

The invention consists, further, in various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.

My invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- I Figure l is a perspective view ofmy improved brush-breaker. Fig. 2 is'an eleva tion of the landside of the plow and attachments. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view showing the manner in which the lower end of the brush-cutter is held-to the plow-point, and Fig. 4 is a detail view of the subsoil-cutter. Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a beam which is made,,preferably, of metal, but may be constructed, however, of any material which maybe found adapted for the purpose, and said beam is made of the shape clearly disclosed in the drawings, curved, and has a shoulder A at its lower end which is fitted over the upper edgeof the landside of the plow. A plow B of ordinary construction is employed, which is provided with suitable handles C, which have braces D intermediate the same and the curved portion of the plowbeam. i

p E designates acutting-blade the upper end of the shank portion of which is angled, as at E, and engages over the convexededge of the plow-beam and is held thereto by means of a clamping mechanism comprising two plates F, which are held together by bolts. Said blade extends from the plow-beam, as shown, to the lower edge of the plow and is recessed at 6 adjacent to its lower end in its rear edge to receive the point K of the plow.

'When said blade is adjusted to the plow in i the manner described, the lower edge of said .blade and plow are disposed in the same plane, and the cutting-edge of said blade is downwardly and forwardly curved, as shown clearly in the side elevation of the drawings.

The under portion of the landside of the plow at the rear end thereof is recessed, as at N, and M designates a subsoil-cutter, which is angled and is held with its cutting-blade in a horizontal plane and in said recessed portion by means of screws R.

Secured to one of the braces S connecting" the handlewith the plow-beam is ahorizontally-disposed loop Q, which is provided for the purpose of holding the point of the plow or the cutting-blade from catching in the ground when being hauled over the ground.

From the foregoing it will be observed that by the provision of a brush-breaker showing the features embodied in my invention the plow will clear itself of grub-roots, thus preventing the same from clogging up, and by the provision of the cuttingblad e, as disclosed, the brush will be out the entire distance to the under edge of the beam, and having the subsoil-cutter attached to the landside the plow is made to cut steadyand hold its place, thus producing an implement whereby wider furrows may be out than with ordinary plows, and by the provision of the loop on the brace connected to the handle above the landside, the plow when thrown upon its landside will be held so that the point of the cutting-blade will not out into the ground as the plow is a being dragged along, thus making it easier to draw the same through the ground.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A brush-breaker comprising in combination with a curved plow beam, a plow secured thereto with suitable handles, a blade having a shank portion above its cutting edge bent at an angle to the forward cutting end of said blade, provided with a right-angled end engaging over the upper convexed edge of said beam, the end of said angled portion being flush with one side face of said beam, clamping members engaging the upper portion of said outting-blade, and bolts for holding said clamping members against the opposite faces of the plow-beam, the lower rear edge of said cuttingblade being cut away forming a shoulder, the vertical wall of which is provided with a tapering recess, the point of said plow having a conical-shaped projection terminating its base in a shoulder which is adapted to engage the shoulder formed in the rear edge of the cuttingblade, as shown and described.
