To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that we, FRED W. HITCI-IINGS and DIGHTON B. ELLswoRTH, citizens of the United States, residing at Corralitos, in the county of Santa Cruz and State of California,
have invented new and useful-Improvements in Oil-Burners, of which the following is a,
specification. 1
Our invention relates to improvements in hydrocarbon-burners for naces, and the like.
lts object is to provide a simple, compact, attractive, and effective burner of the type employing steam to vaporize the oil for use particularly in conjunction with stoves and which may be arranged outside of the stove, so as to take up the least possible amount of It consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of our burner. A represents the casing of our burnersecured in any suitable fashion to the outside of and parallel with the front or end of the fire box 2 of an ordinary cook-stove. The casing comprises a tube of any suitable length formed integral with or screwed into a T portion 3 through which steam enters at 4. Arranged within the casing concentric therewith and extending across the steam-inlet is a short pipe 5, connecting with the oil-supply pipe 6, which latter has a swivel union at 7 to per- ,mit the casing being given a pivotal move:
ment in a horizontal plane. The inner end of the pipe 5 is plugged, and the oil escapes into the mixingchamber 8 of the casing through the perforations 9 in the top of the pipe. The opposite end of the casing supports a second interior and concentric pipe 10 in axial alinement with pipe 5. Pipe 10 has its inner plugged end extending to within about an inch of the end of pipe 5, and the intermediate space gives added room for the mixture of the steam and of the oil issuing through perforations 9.

ranged to discharge at right angles to the axis of the casing into the combustion-chamber. The purpose of the lateral discharge is to economize space and allow the burner to be secured to the sides or front of and parallel with the stove to get the benefit of radiated heat and not to project out into the room. The object of the coil 12 is to give more time for the mixing of the oil and vapor and to save sharp angles in the discharge-pipe. By coiling the pipe from left to right, as shown,- the part 13 is brought close in against the end of the casing.
The end of pipe 12 where it screws into the end of the casing is allowed a limited-swivel movement, so the burner-tip may be tilted more or less in a vertical plane. This, together with the horizontal swivel action afforded by union 7, permits the jet of flame to be directed .to any desiredpoint of the firebox.
The steam for vaporizing purposes may be generated in a coil 14, located in the fire-box and having a valve connection 15'with a source of water-supply and a steam-delivery pipe 16, connecting with inlet 4: in the casing.
The burner may be gotten up in' any desired finish and be made of any size to suit either stove or boiler-furnace.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a hydrocarbon-burner, the combination of a tubular, casing, a steam-inlet thereto, axially-alined perforated pipes inclosed in said casing and having their adjacent ends closed, one of said pipes connecting with a source of oil-supply, and the other of said pipes adapted as an outlet for the commingled oil and steam.
2. In a hydrocarbon-burner, the combination of a tubular casing, a steam-inlet thereto, axially-alined perforated pipes inclosed in said casing and having their adjacent ends closed, one of said pipes connecting with a source of oil-supply, and the other of said pipes adapted as an outlet for the commingled oil and steam, said outlet-pipe having an exterior discharge tion of a tubular casing having a steam-inlet,
axially-alined pipes extending into the casing from opposite ends so as to he inclosed in said casing, said pipes havingtheir adjacent ends separated, one of said pipes perforated and connected with a source of oil-supply and having its inner end closed and the other of said pipes arranged as an outlet for the mixture of steam and'oil, said outlet having-an exterior discharge atapproximately right angles to the axis of the casing.
5. Ina hydrocarbon-burner, the-combination of two alined longitudinally-separated pipes, an exterior concentric casing'from opposite ends of which the said pipes extend in-- wardly, said casing having a steam-inlet and inclosinga mixing-chamber in communication with said pipes, one of said alined pipes arranged as an oil-pipe and having its inner end closed and said other pipe connecting with a laterally-disposed external discharge.
6. In a hydrocarbon-burner, the combination of a-casing having a:steam-inlet,.an oilpipe leading inwardly from one end 01 the casing, and a vapor-outlet pipe longitudinally almed with the fiISt-INUHOdDIDO and leading inwardly from the opposite end of the casing iv said vapor-pipe projecting within the mixingchamber and perforated and having its inner end closed.
7. In a hydrocarbon-burner, the combination of a casing inclosing a mixing-chain])er and having separate steam and oil inlets and aeombined steam and oil vapor outlet, said oil-inlet and vapor-outlet leading into the easing from opposite ends and said outlet having a discharge exterior to and at approximately right angles to the axis of the casing.
8. In a hydrocarhon-burner, the combination of a casing inclosing a mixing-chamber and having a steam-inlet, an oil-pipe entering said chamber, and provided with a swivel connection to permit the casing being turned in a plane at right angles to the oil-pipe, a vapordischarge pipe communicating with the mixing-chamber and provided with a coil exterior to the casing and arranged to discharge transverse to the axis of the casing, said vapor-discharge pipe having a swivel connection to permit its discharge end being moved in a plane transverse to the axis oi the casii'ig.
