'IO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: y v
Be it known that I, T. S. SCRANTON, of New Haven, in the county ofNew Haven, and State of Connectil c'ut, hav-e invented a new and useful Improvement in Tobacco-Pipes; and I do hereby declare the following'to bea full, clear, and exact description of the same, referenoe being had to the accompanying drawings, in whichv 'I Figure 1 is a side elevation ofmy pipe and stein.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section ofthe stem: Figure 3 shows the stem, with itsparts separated.
My invention consists in making thestem of 4a tobacco-pipe in parts', thevdivision'eutendingth'rough the axis of the stem, so that, when the parts are separated, the interior-cavity may be exposed to view, forthe purpose of-cleuning the same.' i' `That others may fully understand my invention, I will particularlydescribe it. A is' the stem of my pipe, which, for convenience, I divide into sec tious,as shown in iig. 1, and unite said sections bycouplersB, t-hus increasing or diminishing the length `of the stem at will, or as desired. The sections of'the stem A are each divided lengthwise through the centre, as shown iugs. 2 and 3, and-*these parts may be separated by removing the couplers B, so as to expose the interior of the tube, and render it possible to .clean the same as perfectlyvas any other exposed surface may be olea-ned.v
interior of the tube, substantiailyas and for the purpose set forth.
The perfect contact of the edges ofthe sections throughout their length is secured by making their surfaces of contact a little convex lengthwise, sons tofbring them together Vwith more pressure atthe centre than at the ends. Steady-pins may also be employed, as shown in gs. 2 and 3, to insure propercoutuct.
When wood or other absorbent material is employed, themoisture from the burning tobacco and fromthevmouth will causesucieut expansion to insure atight joint between the parts of the sections. It is evidentthat a divided stem, such as described, may' be made curved, or in'any desired form.
Having described myinvention, what I claim as new, isi I A tobacco-pipe stein, divided into' parts lengthwise, ,o that said parts may be separated, to expose the T. s'. soRANToN.
