This invention relates to looms, and particularly to the let-off mechanism thereof, the invention being especially applicable to those f looms wherein the warp-beam is positively rotated to gradually let off the warp as the weaving progresses. The tension of the warp in such looms usually depends upon the tension of a spring which is arranged to yield when the warp tension increases and the whiproll is depressed and to expand and raise the whip-roll and take up slack in the warp when the warp tension decreases. The spring operates to maintain a comparatively uniform tension in the warp, and the amount of movement in the whip-roll caused by a given impulse in the warp depends on the .tension of the spring. 1

The whip-roll stand 2 has a vertical slot 3 therein, through which it is adjustably attached to the loom-frame, and this stand supports a rock-shaft l, having thereon a carrier .5, which holds the whip-roll 6. A controlling-spring 20 is disposed on tension-rod 8 between guide 9 and an elongated gear 21 on the screw-threaded part of said rod. The bore of gear 21 for part of its length, as at 22, is screw-threaded, whereby upon rotation it is caused to travel on rod 8 and alter the tension of spring 20, the tension being increased when the gear moves toward guide 9 and decreased when it moves therefrom. Gear 21 is bored smooth for a portion of its length from the end adjacent to sleeve 10, as shown at 23, whereby the gear in moving in one direction along rod 8 can cover the sleeve and not be unduly limited in its move- A recess or countersink 24 is provided in the other end of gear 21, wherein is seated a collar or washer 25. Collar 25 is fastened to spring 20, provides a bearing-surface between the spring and gear 21, and serves to keep the spring from contact with and consequent wear on the screw-threads of rod 8.
A pinion 26 on one end of a rod or arbor 27 meshes with gear 21, said rod being supported in stand 28, near said pinion, and in stand 29. The rod extends to the front of the loom, where it carries a hand-wheel 30, the gear 21 being rotated by this mechanism and the tension of spring 20 altered. Stand 28 has a vertical slot therein, through which passes a bolt or screw, which secures a bearing 31 for red 27 to said stand, whereby said bearing and said rod can be raised or lowered to cause pinion 26 to properly mesh with gear 21. Near hand-wheel 30 red 27 is provided with annular grooves 32, the portion of the rod in said grooves being angular in crosssection. Stand 29 is provided with an aperture 33, through which passes rod 27, said aperture being rounded and of sufficient size at the top to permit rotative and longitudinal movement of said rod therein and squared at the bottom to fit the angular portion of the rod in annular grooves 32 to prevent both rotative and longitudinalmovement of the rod.
When it is desired to adjust the tension of spring 20, red 27 is raised from the squared -to the rounded part of aperture 33, where it is rotated to operate the pinion and gear and secure the desired tension in the spring, and
then it is lowered to the squared part of the aperture, where rotation will be prevented by the angular part of the rod, and gear 21 thereby securely locked against rotation. Where the travel of gear 21 is extreme-in either direction, pinion 26 can be caused to follow said gear by raising rod 27 in aperture 33 and moving it longitudinally from one of annular grooves 32-to another.
Heretofore the tension of spring 20 has usually been altered by moving a collar along rod 8 and securing it in adjusted position by a setscrew. This operation is cumbersome. It is necessary for the loom-fixer to go to the loom with a wrench or other tool to make the adjustment. It is impossible to make the adjustment while the loom is in motion, and it is difiicult to so set the collar to get the desired tension. By the use of our invention all these difficulties are obviated, the tension of the spring being adjusted with facility by the operator at his position in front of the loom while the loom is in motion as well as when it is at rest. Further, our device has the advantage of providing an adjusting handwheel which is not subjected to jerky movement by the intermittent motion of its supporting means.
While one form or embodiment of our invention is disclosed and described herein, we do not limit ourselves to the details of construction shown in the drawings, as it is obvious that various modifications can be made therein without in the least departing from the nature and spirit of the invention.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a loom, the combination with means whereby the whip-roll is moved, of a screwthreaded rod connected with said means, a fixed guide through which said rod is longitudinally movable, an elongatedgear on said rod having a screw-threaded bore, a spring interposed between said guide and said gear, and means whereby said gear is rotated and tension of said spring altered.

In a loom. the combination with means whereby the whip-roll is moved, of a screwthreaded rod connected with said means, a fixed guide through which said rod is longitudinally movable, an elongated gear on said rod having a screw-threaded bore, a spring interposed between said guide and said gear, and means extending to the front of the loom whereby said gear is rotated and tension of said spring altered.

6. In a loom, the combination with means whereby the whip-roll is moved, of ascrewthreaded rod connected with said means, a
fixed guide through which said rod is longitudinally movable, an elongated gear on said rod having a screw-threaded bore, a spring on said rod and having one end bearing against said guide, a collar fastened to the other end of said spring and bearing against said gear, and means whereby said gear is rotated and tension of said spring altered.
7. In a loom, the combination with means whereby the whip-roll is moved, of a screwthreaded rod connected with said means, a fixed guide through which said rod is longitudinally movable, an elongated gear. on said rod having a screw-threaded bore, a collar seated in a recess in the end of said gear, a spring interposed between said guide and said collar, and means whereby said gear is rotated and tension of said spring altered.
8. In a loom, the combination with means whereby the whip-roll is moved, of a screwthreaded rod connected with said means, a fixed guide through which said rod is longitudinally movable, an elongated gear on said rod having a screw-threaded bore, a spring on said rod and having one end bearing against said guide, a collar fastened to the other end of said spring and seated in a recess in the end of said gear, and means whereby said gear is rotated and tension of said spring altered.
9. In a loom, the combination with means whereby the whip-roll is moved, of a screwthreaded rod connected with said means, a fixed guide through which said rod is longitudinally movable, an elongated gear on said rod having a screw-threaded bore, a spring v on said rod and having one end bearing against said guide, a collar fastened to the other end of said spring and bearing against said gear and operating to keep said spring from contact with the'threads of said rod, and means whereby said gear is rotated and tension of said spring altered.
10. In a loom, the combination with means whereby the whip-roll is moved, of a'screwthreaded rod connected with said means, a fixed guide through which said rod is longitudinally movable, an elongated gear on said rod having a screw-threaded bore, a spring interposed between said guide and said gear, and a pinion meshing with said gear and arod connected with said pinion and having a handwheel thereon whereby said gear is rotated and tension of said spring altered.
11. In a loom, the combination with a traveling gear whereby the tension of the controlling-spring of the whip-roll is altered, of a pinion meshing with said gear, and a rod attached to said pinion, said rod having means thereon whereby said gear is locked in ad' justed position.
12. In a loom, the combination with a traveling gear whereby the tension of the controlling-spring of the whip-roll is altered, of a pinion meshing with said gear, a rod upon which said pinion is mounted to rotate said rod being angular in cross-section, and means cooperating with said rod whereby said' gear is locked in adjusted position.
13. In a loom, the combination with a traveling gear whereby the tension of the controlling-spring ofthe whip-roll is altered, of a stand having a squared aperture therein, a pinion meshing with said gear, and a rod passing through the aperture in said stand and upon which said pinion is mounted to rotate, said rod being angular and arranged to seat at intervals in said squared aperture whereby said gear is locked in adjusted position.
