To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, IVILHELM SPIEGELB ERG,

a citizen of the United States, residing at Oshkosh, in the county of i/Vinnebago and State of IVisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Convertible Stools and Canes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in rests auxiliary to umbrellas or walking-sticks.

The object of the invention is to provide a handle for an umbrella or cane, said handle provided with a hinged sectional attachment which when in a closed position will form a suitable grip and when in an open position will provide a seat-rest.

Another object of the invention isto provide a sectional rest which can be easily attached to an umbrella or a cane, said rest provided with a recessed surface which will partly inclose the end of the device to which it is secured, thereby assisting in securing and retaining the hinged sections forming said rest in a fixed open position.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the claims hereto appended.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of an umbrella provided with an attachment constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view of a suitable handle, showing my invention applied thereto, said invention shown partly in transverse section. Fig. 3 is a similar view of Fig. 2, except the attachment is shown in an open position. Fig. 4: is a plan view of the attachment shown in an open position.

Referring to the drawings by reference-numerals, l designates the handle of a suitable umbrella, to which is removably secured a screw-threaded bolt 2, said bolt being provided with a squared shoulder 3 and with an integral projection 4, extending from said bolt in an opposite direction to that of the screwthreaded shank. A plurality of sections 5 and 6 are secured in an assembled position bymeans of a pintle 7 passing through the upper portion of said bolt 2 and through integral annular extensions 8 of the members 5 and 6. Said members when secured in an assembled position produce a hinge to which is secured a plurality of sections or members 9 and 10, which are employed in the construction of a completed rest. In the illustration shown in the accompanying drawingsthe said sections forming the rest are fish-shaped; but it will be obvious that these sections may be formed in any desired shape. Upon the edge of the sections 9 and 10 and near the hinge secured thereto is formed outout or recessed portions 11. Said cut-out portions are adapted to entirely inclose the upper or end portionof an umbrella orcane to which thedevice' is attached. The purpose of this cut-out portion on the members is the production of a brace or rest for the members which will assist in the supporting of the sections when the same are in an open position. It

will be seen that said sections 9 and 10 will The hinge secured to the sections is retained within a recess formed therein, thereby securing the same in a flushed condition with the surface of the members 9 and 10.

Removably mounted upon the hinged sections 9 and 10, employed in constructing a completed device, is a suitable pad 13, which conforms to the shape of the unfolded attachment and is adapted to be held in-position thereon by means of the extension or projection of the bolt 2.

The attachment not only serves as a seatrest when it is desired to use the same'for such a purpose in a crowded or conjested place, but when in a folded condition it forms an admirable grip for an umbrella or a cane and can be easily detached therefrom when it is desired.

It will be apparent from the foregoing description that certain changes in the configuration can be easily made and that certain other modifications and alterations may be desired in the construction of the device, and I- therefore reserve the right to make such alterations, modifications, and changes as shall fairly fall within the scope of my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a suitable handle, of a bolt removably mounted therein, an extension projecting from said bolt, a hinge mounted upon said belt, a plurality of sections having recesses formed upon their edge secured to said hinge, and a pad carried by said sections and engaged by said extension formed upon said bolt.

2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a handle, of a removable attachment secured thereto, comprising a bolt, an integral extension. projecting therefrom, a plurality of pivoted members secured to said bolt, said members having a cut-out portion formed upon one edge thereof, and adapted to partly inclose said handle, when said. sections are in an open position, and means carried by said sections for forming a flexible surface upon their abutting faces.

3. A grip for an umbrella-handle or the like, comprising a hinge, a bolt secured to said hinge, said bolt provided with an upwardly-projecting extension, a plurality of members secured to said hinge, and a flexible covering retained in an assembled position upon said sections by means of said extension formed upon said bolt.

4. In a device of the character described, the combination with a handle, of a bolt provided with a hinge removably secured thereto, a plurality of sections secured to said hinge, said sections provided with cut-out portions near said hinge, said hinge secured to said sections upon their abutting faces and in a flushed condition, flexible means interposed between said abutting faces of said sections, and means'for retaining said flexible means upon said sections, when said sections are in an open position.

5. A device of the character described, comprising a plurality of hinged sections provided with a central projection, and removable covering means carried by said sections and engaging said projection.
