Description

PATENTED AUG. 9, 1904. S. W. MURRAY.
MUFFLER APPLICATION FILED APR. 30, 1904.
no MODEL UNITED STATES Patented August 9, 1904.
SAMUEL WILSON MURRAY, OF MILTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
MUFFLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 766,963, dated August 9, 1904.
Application filed April 30, 1904:.
To whom it nearly concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL VVILsoN MUR- RAY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milton, in the county of Northumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mufliers, of
which the following is a specification.
will be both Warm and comfortable, as well as one which will remain in position after adjustment to the person of the wearer.
My device is intended to serve a protection for the back of the head, the neck, the ears, the chest, and the lower portion of the face against the intense cold of winter, it being composed, preferably, of a knitted fabric which will afford warmth without inducing a perspiration.
To this end my invention consists of a muffler comprising a body portion terminating-in two oppositely-extending ties, one of which is adapted to pass through a slot formed in the body portion of the mufiiers, the ties to be secured or knotted beneath the chin of the wearer.
My invention further contemplates the provision of a muffler having ear-tabs formed integral therewith preferably, the inufller being provided with an extension opposite the eartabs, which extension is spread over the chest when the muffler is in use.
Also my invention comprises the provision of an open pocket for the reception of the nose and may have tapes secured to the upper edges of the mufller and passing over the top of the head of the wearer, the tapes being secured together to adjust the height of the muffler on the face.
My invention therefore consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, such as will be more fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my muffler. Fig. 2 is a plan View showing a slight modification thereof, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing my Serial No. 205,757- No modeld preferred form of muffler as it appears when worn.
In the drawings, A indicates the body portion of a muffler constructed in accordance with my invention from any suitable material and being provided with the oppositely-extending ties 1 1, which are made reasonably wide for a reason hereinafter set forth. The muffler is further provided with the broad flap extension 2, designed to serve as achestprotector.
Located on the transverse center of the muffler is the nose-protector, which consists of a loop or fullness of the fabric 3. In the former instance the loop is formed independently of the muffler and secured thereto by stitching or in any othersuitable manner, and the material ofavhich the muffler is formed is cut out beneath the loop to form an open pocket for the nose. In the event, however, that the noseprotector is to be made integral with themuffler an extra fullness is formed, and the material of which the muffler is made is slittcd to permit breathing.
On either side .of the nose-protector are formed the ear-tabs 4: 4i, to each of which is secured a tape 5, the tapes extending at approximately right angles to the longitudinal median line of the muffler, and one "of the tapes carries a light buckle 6, adapted to engage and secure the opposite tape. These tapes are passed over the top of the head and serve to adjust the muffler on the face of the wearer against sagging or wrinkling and to retain the muffler in such adjusted position.
A slot 7 :is formed in the muliler on one side thereof, 'n'eferably the left side, and this slot is adapted to receive the opposite or righthand tie when the inuliier is being secured on the wearer.
In applying the muffler to the wearer the muffler is placed over the lower part of the face, with the ties extending backward over the shoulders. The righthand tie is then passed through the slot 7 from the inner face of the muffler, while the opposite or left-hand tie is wound around the neck, the ends of the ties being knotted in front beneath the chin. In this way a smooth, and even surface is formed in the back of the neck and lower portion of the back of the head, the straps or ties being of such width that the neck is protected by a double thickness of material.
In the modification the muflier is left unprovided with a nose protector, the upper edge of the muffler resting against the upper lip, this being the only difference.
It will be evident that changes other than those herein set forth might be made in the form and arrangement of the several parts clescribed Without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction herein described; but,
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A muflier for protecting the face, and chest comprising a body portion having a slot therein, a flap extension integral therewith to protect the chest, and ties in which the ends of the body portion terminate, one of the ties passing through the slot in the mufller, and the ends of the ties being knotted.
2. A muffler for protecting the face, neck and chest, of ear-tabs forming apart thereof, straps secured to the ear-tabs and passing over the head of the wearer, ties extending from opposite ends of the muffler, said muffler having a slot formed therein, one of the ties passing through said slot, and the ends secured together in front.
3. The combination Witha muffier, provided with a slot, of ties extending from opposite ends of the muflier, one of the ties passing through the slot in the mufiier, the ends of the ties being knotted.
4. A muflier comprisinga body portion having a slot therein, a chest-protector, of a noseprotector provided with an open end to permit breathing, ties extending from opposite ends of the muflier, one of the ties passing through the slot, and the ends secured in front.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SAMUEL WILSON MURRAY.
