SILO OR TANK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 766,708, dated August 2, 1904.
Application filed May 26, 1904. Serial No. 209,962- (No model.)
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LYMAN G.LEASE, of WVarren, in the county of Trumbull and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Silos or Tanks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to so construct the wall of a silo, tank, or other similar structure as to prevent outward crowding and insure the firm retention of the blocks or tiles in place by means both simple and inexpensive.
The invention will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows a portion of a silo constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view showing the means for retaining the tiles in position. Figs. 3, at, and 5 are similar views of slight modifications. Fig. 6 shows two blocks in side elevation.
The circular wall of the tank br inclosure is made up of layers of blocks or tiles 1 after the manner common in wall constructions. The tiles of all or some of the layers are formed on their upper and lower faces with central longitudinal grooves or recesses 2. Within these grooves are designed to be placed bands 3 and cement 4, the latter not only serving to retain the several layers together, but also insures the proper retention of the bands, which serve to prevent the wall from bulging outwardly, as is liable to occur under the weight of the grain or other articles stored within the inclosure. In addition thereto the wall is further strengthened by an outer band or rod 5 encircling the structure, such band fitting within grooves 6, formed in the outer faces of the blocks. This groove is of suflicient depth to permit the band 5 to be entirely covered by an outer coating 7 of cement or plaster. (See Fig. 3.)
In Figs. 1 and 2 I have shown the outer bands on every third layer, the bands 3 being between the blocks of the intermediate layers; but this may be differently arranged.
In Fig. 3 I have shown the bands 5 encircling the same tiles that are also secured by the bands 3, while in Fig. 4 the blocks of the several layers encircled by the outer band 5 are shown without the upper and lower recesses 2, such being provided only in the blocks of the intervening layers, whereas in Figs. 1 and 2 all of the blocks of each layer are shown equipped with the upper and lower recesses, including the layers surrounded by the outer encircling" bands.
If desired, only every third layer may be equipped with the bands 3, the intervening layers being surrounded by the outer bands. (See Fig. 5.)
Each block or tile is made with a reduced end 8 (see Fig. 6) for fitting in the larger end of the next adjacent block, thereby adding additional strength to the structure and forming a tight joint which is preferably secured by mortar.
From what has been said it will be seen that a silo or tank constructed in accordance with my invention will be strong and durable, the blocks or tiles being firmly secured as against outward bulging. Although I have shown the bands 3 as being rectangular in cross-section and the bands 5 as circular in cross-section, it is obvious that they may be made of any desired shape, it only being essential that they form sufiicient anchorage in their connections with the tiles to insure the retention of the latter in place.
I claim as my invention 1. A silo or tank composed of layers of blocks or tiles having upper and lower longi tudinal grooves, rods or bands fitted in said grooves, and outer encircling bands.
2. A silo or tank composed of layers of blocks or tiles the blocks or tiles of some of said layers having grooves in their outer faces, rods or bands fitted in said grooves, and a covering for said grooves and rods.
3. A silo or tank composed of layers of blocks or tiles, the blocks or tiles of some of the layers having upper and lower grooves, bands fitted in said grooves, blocks or tiles of others of said layers having grooves in their outer faces, and rods or hands fitted in said latter grooves.
4. A silo or tank composed of layers of In testimony whereof I have signed this blocks or tiles, each block being reduced at specification in the presence of two subscribone end to fit the larger end of the next adjaing Witnesses.
