Description

No. 766,578. PATENTED AUG. 2, 1904. W. AXMAN & E. KUEOHLE.
HANGER FDR SLIDING DOORS.
APPLICATION FILED OUT. 1, 1903.
N0 MODEL.
\7/WITNESSES A TTORNEYS UNITED STATES Patented August 2, 1904.
PATENT OFFICE.
HANGER FOR SLIDING DOORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 766,578, dated August 2, 1904.
Application filed October 1, 1903.
To 14/]- wlmnr it lib/bf] concern:
Be it known that we, IVILLIAM AXMAN and EDUARD KUEoHLn, citizens of the United States, residing at Yonkers, in the county of \Vestchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 7 in Hangers for Sliding Doors, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide improved hangers for sliding doors, whereby doors of this class may be easily and conveniently moved on their supports and also raised within certain limits in order to facilitate the operation thereof under certain circumstances; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of our improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of our improved door-hanger, taken on the line a: :r of Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a front view thereof, and Fig. 3 a side view of a detail of the construction.
In the drawings forming part of this specification we have shown at a a portion of the top of an ordinary sliding door and at I) a part of the framework in which the top portion of the door moves, and the framework 6 is provided with a space 12 in which the top portion of the door fits, and this space is preferably provided with molding 6 whereby the same is deepened, and it will be understood that the space if forms a track or way in which the top portion of the door moves, and communicating with this track or way throughout its length is a slot or opening 6.
Over the door a is secured a suitable support 0, which also extends the full length of the track or way in which the top portion of the door moves, and secured thereto is a supplemental support provided at the bottom thereof with a groove 0 adapted to receive a Serial No. 175,264. (No model.)
wheel (I, the perimeter of which is formed to correspond to said groove.
The wheel a? is mounted on a trunnion (2, which is preferably provided with a collar f, having a flange at one end and a washer f at the other end, and said trunnion is provided with a threaded extension 0 from which is suspended a support g, which is held on the extension 6 of the trunnion e by a nut g.
The support g is bowed at so that the lower end thereof is directly under the wheel (Z, and in the lower end of this support 1 is supported a vertically-arranged screw-threaded bolt it.
In the top portion of the door is formed a recess ('0 in which is secured a casing a, which is held in place by a plate a, secured to the top of the door, and the lower end of the bolt it extends down into the casing a and is provided with a cylindrical nut i, the lower end of which is provided with a beveled gear and the upper end of the casing a is contracted over the nut 1', so as to hold said nut in said casing and form a support for the door.
In one side of the casing a in the top of the door (6 is mounted a short stub-shaft j, provided at its inner end with a beveled gear 7' and at its outer end with a head j, having a transverse recess y similar to the head of an ordinary screw, this detail of the construction being shown detached and enlarged in Fig. 3 and being also shown in position in Fig. 1.
The door a is provided in horizontal line with the stub-shaft j with a recess Z adapted to receive a plug Z1 having a screw-thread at its outer end and a transverse recess 73, by which said plug may be screwed into position or removed when desired.
By turning the stub-shaft jin one direction the nut a will be moved upwardly on the bolt h and the door correspondingly raised, while by turning the said nut in the opposite direction the door will be correspondingly lowered.
The casing a in the top of the door is provided at the top with an inwardly-directed collar ('0 in connection with which the nut vi operates, and the movement of this nut is thus made to raise and lower the door according to the direction in which the nut is turned.
It will be understood that in order to operate the nut the plug 76 must be removed, and after the desired adjustment has been secured said plug is again inserted into said recess is. It will also be understood that the door a may be provided with a number of these supports, two, at least, being necessary to secure the proper operation of the door.
By means of this construction the door, as will be seen, is carriedby the support 0 in which the wheel d is free to turn, and over said support is secured a shield m, which is designed to prevent dust, dirt, and other substances from collecting in or on the support 0 the wheel d, and the parts connected therewith, and, if desired, the shield m may extend downwardly to the bottom of the main support 0 or even lower, if desired.
Having fully described our invention. what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a door-hanger, a door, a casing secured in the top thereof, a screw passing downwardly into said casing, a nut mounted on the lower end of said screw and provided at its lower end with a beveled gear, means for holding the nut in said casing, said door being also provided in one side thereof with a lateral opening communicating with the interior of said casing through the side thereof, a short shaft mounted in the side of said casing and provided at its inner end with a beveled pinion adapted to operate in connection with said beveled gear and at its outer end with a screwhead, and a screw-threaded plug for closing the lateral opening in the door, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our invention we have signed our names, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 29th day of September, 1903.
