SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 766,424, dated August 2, 1904.

Be it known that I, James A. CLnunNTs, a citizen of the United States, residing at A bingdon,in the county of Knox and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-\Vire-Clamping Devices; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, refer ence beinghad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has for its object to provide means for clamping and stretching the wires of fences in which the clamping-bars may be adjusted and connected to the wires in a comparatively short space of time and the bars capable of separation and removal when desired without inconvenience to the operator.
The invention consists in a fence-wireclamping device constructed substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 of thedrawings is a side elevation of the clamping device, showing it applied to the wires of a fence and a wire-straining device connecting therewith; Fig. 2, a horizontal Cl'OSS-SQCtIUII, on an enlarged scale, taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1, showing the clamping-bars and the fence-wire between the same, also the means employed for holding the bars together; Fig. 3, a similar view taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 1, showing the hinged clcvis for attaching thereto the wire-straining device, said clevis when in strain forming a high'pressurc clamp to assist the central portion of the two bars in clamping and corrugating the wires. Fig. at is a perspective view, on an enlarged scale, of the upper end of one of the clamping-bars; Fig. 5, a similar view of the opposite one of said bars.
In the accompanying drawings, A B represent the two clamping-bars, (shown in detail in Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings,) and between these bars are held the horizontal and longitudinal wires (J of the woven-wire fence in a crimped or corrugated manner.
The clamping-bars A B are preferably of wood, the former bar having a longitudinal groove (1 extending its entire length and a metal wearing-plate D secured to the inner side of said bar and adjacent to the groove, as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings.
The clamping-bar B is formed with a longitudinal groove l), in which is seated a rod E, said rod extending the entire length of the bar and held in place by suitable staples c or by any other means found best adapted to the purpose, thereby enabling the necessary c0r rugations to be formed in the wire.
The wires 0 are given the necessary corrugation or bond by means of the rod E and groove (1 when the clamping-bars are brought together against the wire, the wearing-plate l) preventing wear upon the wood of the clamping-bar by the fence-wire, said plate being on one or both of the bars, as found most preferable.
The clamping-bars AB are not permanently hinged together, but are so hinged that the bars will not only be capable of swinging apart, but readily detached from each other, as circumstances require.
I do not wish to be understood as limiting my invention to any particular means of hinging the clamping-bars together so long as the means used will admit of the bars being swung apart and also detached from each other, nor do I limit my invention to any particular means employed for corrugating the fencewire.
One of the many means that may be ernployed for hinging the two clamping-bars together resides in the bracket F, suitably connected to the clamping-bar A, and the bracket (it, connected to the clamping-bar B, said bars being detachably hinged together by means of the hook (I on the bracket G, which is adapted to engage an eye or loop (Z on the bracket F, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
The two bars A B are drawn together by means of a latch device comprising a rod H, which loosely engages the projecting end of the bracket F (shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings) and is brought into position to engage the bifurcated end fof the bracket G, a suitable nut engaging the screw-threaded end of the links L M,which links are adapted to overlap each other at their free ends, and at this point a suitable open hook N detachably engages said links, and to this hook is secured the straining-chain O, which in turn is secured to a suitable Windlass, as shown atP in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
The hitch or clevis, as above described, is so constructed that when in strain it will support the central portion of the two clampingbars with great pressure, this being considered of material importance when in use as greatly enhancing the value of the invention.
The straining-chain Oconnects withadrum k, projecting from the Windlass P, which has the usual sockets Z for engaging an operatinglever therewith, and ratchet-teeth m, with which engages the pawl n, said Windlass connecting with ayoke Q, and said yoke in turn is attached to any-stationary object, such as a post B, through the medium of a suitable chain 0.
I have shown one of many forms of windlass that may be used as a straining device in connection with the hitch and clamping-bars, although I do not wish to be understood as limiting my invention thereto, as any form of straining device may be substituted for the straining device shown and adapted for attachment to any stationary object found most convenient, and any such changes or modification in the invention that would come within ordinary mechanical judgment may be resorted to without in any manner departing from the principle of the invention.
Having now fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A fence-wire-clamping device comprising two separable clamping-bars, means for hinging the bars together consisting of two right-angle brackets adapted to embrace the sides of the bars and loosely engaging each other, and means for drawing and holding the brackets against the sides of the bars and releasing them when desired, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A fence-wire-clamping device comprising two separable clamping bars suitably hinged together having a longitudinal groove and a longitudinal rod respectively, said groove and rod being on line with each other so that they will serve to corrugate the fencewire when the bars are brought together, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. A fence-wire-clamping device comprising two separable clamping-bars having a longitudinal groove and a longitudinal rod upon the inner and opposite sides of the bars respectively, one of said bars having awearingplate thereon, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. A fence-wire-clamping device comprising two parallel clamping-bars suitably corrugated, a hinged hitch or clevis adapted to high clamping pressure supporting the central portion of the bars and adjustably and detach-- as and WVitnesses:
