CAR-DOOR OPERATING AND FASTENING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 766,393, dated August 2, 1904.

Be it known that I, REVERDY JOHNSON SCALES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Martinsville, in the county of Henry and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful (Jar- Door Operating and Fastening Device, of which the followingis a specification.
My invention relates to car-doors, and especially to an operating and locking mechanism therefor, and has for its objects to produce a comparatively simpleinexpensive device of this character by which the door may be readily opened or closed and locked in either of said positions or in an intermediate position.
To these ends the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
' In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a portion of a car having my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional elevation on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the side wall of a car having a doorway or opening 2 adapted to be closed by a horizontally slid-able or movable door 3, these parts, except as hereinafter described, being of the usual or any appropriate construction and material.
Disposed horizontally beneath the door 3 and bolted or otherwise secured to the side of the car, from which it is suitably spaced, is a track or way at, composed, preferably, of bar metal and provided adjacent to its longitudinal center with a laterally offset and upwardlyprojecting portion or linger 5, having at its upper end a transverse perforation 6, disposed vertically above the axis of a shaft '7, journaled for rotation in suitable bearings in the bar a and adjacent side of the car, there being fixed upon the outer end of the shaft an operatingwheel or member 8, having a crank-handle 9 and a transverse perforation 10, adapted under certain conditions to register with the perforation 6 for a purpose which will later appear.
Fixed upon the inner end of the shaft 7 is a toothed pinion 11 in mesh with a rack 12, se-
cured to or otherwise provided on the lower horizontal edge of the door 3, whereby when the shaft is rotated through the medium of the hand-wheel 8 the pinion 11 will act upon the rack for moving the door to open or closed position.
The door is guided and rendered free in its movements by means of rotary guide-rollers 13, disposed, respectively, adjacent to opposite corners of the door and seated and journaled in suitable recesses 14, in which the rollers are housed by protecting plates or shields 15, said rollers being designed for travel upon a rounded head or rib 16, formed along the upper edge of the rail 4.
In practice the door is opened or closed in the manner above explained and may be locked in either of said positions or in any desired intermediate position by bringing the perforations 6 and 10 into register and inserting therethrough a lock 17 for securing the wheel 8, and consequently the shaft 7 against rotation. It may be mentioned that when the door reaches the final of either its opening orclosing movement the lock-receiving opening 10 will lie in proper register with the perforation 6, while during the intermediate positions of the door care must be exercised to attain the proper registration of the openings.
From the foregoing it is apparent that I produce a simple device admirably adapted for the attainment of the ends in view, it being understood that minor changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. The combination with a car and its door, of a rack provided on one of said parts, a pinion carried by the other of said parts in engagement with the rack and operable for moving the door, an operating member connected with the pinion, a fixed arm or portion carried by the car, and means for locking the operating member to said arm or portion.
