SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 766,098, dated July 26, 1904.
Application filed January 6, 1904, Serial No. 187,973. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Athol, in the county of Spinkand State of South Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cloth-finding Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in machines for rolling bandages; and its object is to provide a simple and inexpensive device of this character which is compact in form and which can be adjusted for rolling bandages of different widths.
\Vith the above and other objects in View the invention consists of a head on which are revolubly mounted gears, and one of these gears serves to rotate a spindle which is mounted within the head and within a sliding plate. This plate is mounted on guides projecting from the head and is adapted to be moved upon said guides by means of an adjusting device provided for that purpose.
The invention also consists in the further construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the machine and showing in dotted lines the spindle partly removed, and Fig. 2 is a detail view of the gear of the spindle.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 is a yoke having a clamping device 2 therein, by means of which the yoke can be securely fastened to a table or other similar article of furniture. Secured to this yoke is a head 3, having a strap 4 on the outer face thereof, and revolubly mounted within the strap adjacent the free end thereof is a boss 5, extending from the center of a small gear 6. This gear is mounted between the head 3 and the strap 4 and meshes with a larger gear 7, revolubly mounted on a stem 8, projecting laterally from the head. A handle 9 is secured to gear 7, so as to permit the same to be readily turned. An angular passage 10 is formed within the boss 5 and the gear 6 and is adapted to receive a spindle 11, which is revolubly mounted within head 3 and has a handle 12 at one end. Guide-rods 13 are secured to the head 3 and extend laterally therefrom. Swiveled within this head is one end of a screw-threaded rod 14, having a crank 15 connected thereto. A plate 16 is slidably mounted upon the rods 13 and the revoluble spindle 11 and is engaged by the threaded rod 1 1. It will therefore be seen that by rotating rod 14: the plate 16 can be moved from or toward head 3.
\Vhen it is desired to roll a bandage, one end thereof is wrapped tightly about the spindle 11 and said spindle then rotated by means of the gears 7 and 6. The plate 16 can be adjusted from or toward the head, so that said head and the plate can form guides for the bandage during the rolling operation. \Vhen it is desired to remove the rolled bandage, the spindle 11 is withdrawn from the plate 16, head 3, and the gear 6 by sliding it longitudinally therein.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not desire to limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a machine of the character described, the combination with a head having securing means connected thereto; of guide-rods projecting from the head, a plate slidably mounted thereon, a revoluble adjusting-rod secured to the head and engaging the plate, a removable spindle revolubly mounted in the head and plate, and means for rotating the spindle.
